Sorry that should be 4+5 (I thought it was Sunday!!!)

JaquelineHyde · 20/08/2012 23:04

I fucking knew it!!!

Bloody woman, mind you she has had 7 of her own so if anyone can spot it I sippose she can.

I'm still going to make her wait until my scan though, that will teach her to be such a know it all Grin

MumofWombat · 21/08/2012 02:59

Bunnygirl 80, we had a record breaking summer (it was over 35 degrees consistently) here in Perth when I was pregnant with DS. I will admit to chuckling at a thread on MN because someone was really worried about being pregnant over the UK summer. The advice was to wear layers....I was like 'layers! layers! I only wore minimal clothing when I had to leave the house!!' And I'd only go places if they had a swimming pool or air conditioning....
Although its tough being pregnant in the heat, I felt happier having the newborn stage during the winter (for UK people, winter in Perth is like winter in the Med - I've not worn a coat here yet...) it felt easier to keep him warm than it might do to keep him cool!
I'm off to DS's swimming lesson now, I REALLY don't feel like it, but he loves being in the water - I've already told his instructor in case I need to pass him to her and get out the pool and go throw up!
Roll on the second trimester....

highlandbird · 21/08/2012 08:59

sorry don't have time to read thread now toddler needing breakfast but can someone please add me to the list?? DC2 due 16th April, I'll try to read thread later when DS down for a nap, thanks!!

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 09:00

I'm really pleased with my due date actually - not too pregnant in summer months but far enough past winter that baby won't be as vulnerable to bugs going round. My annual leave runs April to April so I'll be able to use leave from both years! Sorted!

Have any of you told work yet? I'm not sure when to. I'm a nurse - I currently do a specialist role so not much hands on but they have asked ha like I have a choice me to do a shift on the ward tomorrow. Not likely to be a problem but patients can get aggressive etc. my issue is my contract for my current job runs out end of September and then I'm meant to go back on the ward full time. I was looking at applying for different jobs - staying with the same hospital - but no-one's going to relish me getting a job only to announce I'm diffed, are they?

bunnygirl80 · 21/08/2012 09:20

mumtowombat my DS was a November baby, so managed to avoid the being pg over summer part last time. I think he spent most of the summer being partially boiled alive though, as despite it being 30 odd degrees outside, my mil and mum both came to visit, and both insisted he needed a hat and booties on at all times Confused

aufaniae · 21/08/2012 09:28

HaveALittleFaith "no-one's going to relish me getting a job only to announce I'm diffed, are they?" well yes in reality I guess they might be a little out out but it's absolutely your legal right to do so. If it's a permanent role you're looking for they get you long-term - whether they choose you who is having a baby now or someone else who decides to have a baby in say 4 years, in the long term it's the same thing.

The alternative is for employers not to employ women of childbearing age!

And anyway, you're not exactly applying to work in a small business with 3 employees! (Which although legal would be a bit off I guess!)

Is your job now considered temporary or are you considered permanently employed by the NHS? In a stroke of master planning Hmm the first time I got pregnant I was on a temporary contract so no maternity pay or job to go back to - I got SMP. (Think I don't even get that this time as I'm a full time student!)

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 09:44

I have a permanent contract but am temporarily seconded. My colleague spent a large part of last year telling me to cross my legs as it would be incontinent for the service (!) until our senior colleague pointed out this was a potentially dodgy thing to say (little did she know we continued to TTC anyway!).

I am looking at creating a new role and I could potentially do about 6 months settling into the role before baby arrives so we'll see.

alwayshopeful13 · 21/08/2012 09:54

Hello ladies,

I joined this thread last week but promptly went to France on hols so been off the radar a bit, and I don't think I made it onto the list. Could somebody add me? I too am a bit superstitious about doing it myself given mc at 11 weeks last December. This will (hopefully!) be my DC1 and EDD is April 20th.

I was slightly fretful on holiday as only pg symptoms so far are being v tired (though could have been the 35 degree French heat, or the shock of being in France and having to avoid wine and gorgeous cheese!) and v fleeting feelings of nausea. Though DH does insist my boobs are waaay bigger than usual :-)

Counting the days till we can have early scan - which I guess will have to be next week to have a chance of picking up heartbeat (I'll be 6 weeks this Friday). Fingers and toes crossed.

Hope you lovely ladies are all doing well and welcome to the new joiners. I promise I'll try to keep up with the busyness of the thread a bit better than I did before!

Giddypants · 21/08/2012 10:49

faith I'm also a nurse, however in ICU so no problem with staff 80+ ! But a colleague of mine joined us last year already pg, no one batted an eyelid.
And there are currently 4 of us pg at around the same stage, one has already gone off sick (incompetent cervix) and numerous mc recently.
Just do what you need to do and they can deal with it!

SneezySnatcher · 21/08/2012 11:12

Faith I'm a bit concerned about work too. I'm a teacher and have been at the same school for a while. I was full time but I went part-time after having DD. My PT contracts are yearly however, so run from sept-sept. this leaves me in the position of potentially not having a job to return to after maternity leave, but DH and I decided it wouldn't stop us trying for DC2.
I'm worried about telling my head as he only let me go part time so I didn't leave, and the understanding was I'd go FT when DD is at nursery. Not sure what will happen but there are more important things than work!

angeltattoo · 21/08/2012 11:18

Well my morning sickness has kicked in...I was hoping to avoid it, but have actually been spending some quality time with my head down the toilet bowl this morning!

faith i'm a specialist nurse too, and I do one shift per month on the ward, my next one is next week, when I'll be between 7-8 weeks...i have had some aearly bleeding so I am tempted to stop them...hmmmmmmm

aufaniae · 21/08/2012 12:04

thanks magictorch :)

aufaniae · 21/08/2012 12:11

I know it might be a little early to be thinking about this! But just in case it's useful to someone ...

When we had DS, money was fairly tight (as it will be this time too!).

What helped us enormously last time was discovering that our mortgage provider (Halifax) gives mortgage holidays, no questions asked, for maternity.

So for 6 months we simply didn't pay the mortgage. It was great! It meant I could have a year at home with DS, which simply wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

Of course they add a cost to the mortgage for doing this, but it wasn't outrageous, and IMO it was negligible compared to being able to stay home with DS.

I imagine lots of mortgage providers do this - they didn't advertise it, we found out by accident.

photochick · 21/08/2012 12:21

Hi everyone, have added myself - hope that is ok.
Been to the doctors this morning after several bfp's since the weekend :-)
very excited but still can't quite belive it as was first month of properly TTC!

Hi photochick, it also happened for me in the first month TTC and I'm not sure its sunk in..it all seems to be too easy so far! Haven't been to the doc's yet so I think it will become real then.

aufaniae · 21/08/2012 15:13

Can I just check - does everyone know that you're officially about two weeks more pregnant than you are in reality?!

When they do your dates, they start counting from the first day of your cycle, not an estimate of the day you conceived.

So you're officially about 2 weeks pregnant already on the day you conceive!

I'm exactly 6 weeks pregnant officially. (But 4 in reality!).

This made no sense to me last time round as we knew exactly when I conceived (DP was 500 miles away every other day that month so a physical impossibility any other day!) but they kept asking for day 1 of my cycle, which I had absolutely no idea about!!

alwayshopeful13 · 21/08/2012 15:21

Thanks for the updated list aufaniae

Yep the whole 2 weeks more pregnant than seems biologically possible confused me for ages. But it becomes easier to get to grips with it when you're reading about different things that are happening with each week. I'm looking forward (v nervously) to 6 weeks on Friday and then (fingers x-ed) a strong hb on the early scan next week :-)

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 15:57

I am about 4 weeks then!

Top tip sadly from working on a chemo ward if you're really struggling with nausea, especially drinking liquids (I know I am) try having an ice lolly instead. Not entirely sure about the science but it doesn't 'land' in your stomach so hard so it's less likely to make you sick

aufaniae · 21/08/2012 16:45

Yup, just the once last time! DS was a wonderful surprise. We were very surprised I remember! Grin

I half expected the same this time so I was getting a bit worried after nearly half a year of trying with no success.

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 17:06

We thought we'd be quick - my parents conceived Dsis first try and me on second, DH's parents were speedy and so was Dsis with our nephew. If we hadn't have TTC we wouldn't know DH had health problems. Anyway, it's funny how it varies for people. I'm just delighted to be diffed now Grin

Ice lolly has given me a window to eat and drink something. Phew!

EssexWelsh · 21/08/2012 17:27

Just had a 'disagreement' with DP. Chatting about the reality of maternity leave etc and he wants to and has wanted to for a long time to get his commercial pilot's licence. It is his dream, however very unlikely he will ever get a job but he says doing it through open university will mean, no free evenings or weekends. I laughed at him and he said I quote 'well I don't see why I will have to get up in the night when I am the one going to work'!! I walked out dramatically slamming door.

He is so good with kids and very hands on with everything, I would never expect him to say this. Am I being unreasonable, should I be doing EVERYTHING as I'm 'off' or do I need to stand my ground that my job is in fact more tiring than his!

Do your DPs get up in the nights?

Emmie10 · 21/08/2012 17:42

Can someone add me to the list please? Due 10th April with my first.

Had an early scan today due to some spotting and everything is fine. It has made it all very real to see the baby and the heart beating away. Have been an emotional wreck all day!

aufaniae · 21/08/2012 17:43

Essex does he absolutely need to study next year? Could he not put if off a year?

Both DP and I are full-time (mature!) students. Studying with a LO is hard, I would imagine near impossible on top of a job. (We started studying when DS was 18 months)

I did do all the nights when DS was little, but it was as I was BFing and DS would only sleep after feeding, no amount of rocking / shushing etc would get him to sleep. And the main reason was I never really got the hang of expressing. Or never really got the hang of finding the time to express to be more precise!
DP would make up for it at other times, giving me a chance to catch up with sleep.

This time round I am going to get an electric pump and make time! Having said that the baby is due in the middle of DP's final project. Not sure exactly how we're going to manage that. He won't be doing night wakings then I imagine! But he'll be finished by the end of May.
