NCT classes and IM

We are planning to get independent midwives for antenatal and postnatal support, have met the IMs last night, they seem friendly and came highly recommended by my friend, they said they would tell us all they would tell us at NCT class and that their clients don't usually go to NCT classes, given we are going to spend a substantial amount for IMs I'm thinking whether we want to spend a few extra hundred pounds for NCT class, just to meet parents-to-be in the area.

Did you find NCT classes useful? And if you are getting the info from IMs would you still go to NCT classes? Thanks.

Hi

If you are a reasonably intelligent generally well-informed person that takes the initiative to understand what's going on in life/pregnancy etc, you aren't going to learn anything new at NCT.

In reality people are basically paying to meet 'like-minded' couples going through the same thing at the same time as you. we dont have any supportive family or anything so i thought it would be a good idea. in reality, i found the classes, and the people, make such a giant deal of everything like nobody ever had a baby before, and the people i met are utterly painful - they speak of nothing but babies, and frankly, its boring, and i now have a lifelong commitment to making crap excuses to get out of boring tea and cake sessions (many months later - will they ever tire of this?!). in reality, when you have a new baby, you are hard pushed to avoid the constant assault of mother and baby groups in your area, and not knowing any other new mums to hang out with is only something i can dream of!

in my opinion, total waste of money and time. plus everything they tell you about childbirth is ridiculously rose-tinted and unrealistic for most.

Thanks for this. the thought of joining this type of thing makes me feel quite sick! everyone has almost said you MUST but you have confirmed everything I have suspected. I plan to go to antenatal classes and pregnancy pilates instead (at half the price) and then do some coffee place stalking and sure I can find some nice, like minded women there! Sure they are out there somewhere and we can spend the money we saved on cake instead!
