Welcome Prickly and congratulations! Grin

No question is too stupid to ask here - we're all first-timers but fortunately we have some lovely FTFs who have gone through it all, got the T-shirt & pop in with calming words of wisdom Wink Hope your journey is a smooth one!

Beeblebear · 30/04/2012 13:45

Welcome pickle, and congratulations!

MCT76 · 01/05/2012 16:22

Welcome Prickly! It's nice to see you on this side of the fence. I know how you feel about not feeling pregnant...you'll just have to hang in there and try to keep yourself busy so as not to drive yourself crazy!

I'm not sure I'm best suited to giving out advice as I am in a right mess at the moment...work is almost non-existent which means I have far too much time in my hands to worry and stress and it's certainly getting me down. I still have just over 2 weeks to go until the 12-week scan and the midwife is coming for her first home visit tomorrow but I keep feeling that there is something wrong as I don't feel anything and can't see any trace of a bump apart from flab...To make matters worse, I am very isolated from anyone I know and don't fancy doing much until the scan which is like a vicious circle really.

Hope everyone's feeling well...at least the sun is shining! Smile

PricklyPickle · 02/05/2012 19:35

Thanks for the welcome ladies.

Hello MC I remember you from the other side, it doesn't seem that long ago to me that you got your BFP, but I bet it feels like an age to you.

You're so close now to your 12 week scan, after that I'm sure you'll feel better as you can get back out in to the world without having a huge secret hanging over you.

Its easier said than done trying to take your mind off it. My shock has faded a bit now to be replaced by waves of excitement followed by fear that something will go wrong.

Question: The muscles in my tummy feel quite tight and achy, is this usual and does anybody know why? My bean is only about the size of a sesame seed at the moment so it can't be pressing outwards. Any words of wisdom?

LateToThisBabyMalarky · 02/05/2012 21:21

Hi MCT, hope you're feeling ok & not worrying about things too much. This bit in the run-up to the 12-week scan can be so hard, and never-ending! But it will come round eventually & you'll feel so much better once you've seen it wriggling around on the screen Smile. I'd be very surprised if you were feeling anything at this stage so you shouldn't worry about that, and as for a bump... my waist 'thickened' after about 12 weeks (and my boobs got distinctly larger!), but I didn't start showing any kind of bump until 20 weeks! People (and the babies) go at different paces so don't stress by comparing yourself to other people.
As for symptoms, I haven't felt anything for most of my pregnancy (I'm 35 weeks now), some people just don't.
How did the home visit with the midwife go? Were you able to have a chat with her about things? If you can, download the 'What to Expect' app (free) as that gives day-by-day, week-by-week info on what your body is doing, and the baby's progress.

Prickly, pleased to hear you're getting your head around it finally! Don't stress yourself out about it going wrong or you'll be in for a looooooooong few months ahead! Smile Can't say for sure what's going on with your tummy - is this down in your abdomen? It might just be things beginning to move around and stretch a bit, it depends on what it was all like down there before your BFP Grin Even though the bean is teeny tiny, there's other things that are growing around it. If it starts getting very uncomfortable it might be worth getting checked out.

highheelsandequations · 03/05/2012 10:30

Just popping in to say hello and welcome to the new faces, hope you have a comfortable stay here :)

Late I can't believe you're 35 weeks!! Not long now :)

MCT I would say it's still really early to be feeling anything or seeing a bump, perfectly normal. I had a (reasonably) flat stomach until 15 weeks or so and noone at work had guessed when I told them around 15-16 weeks.

Prickly I had lots of crampy feelings in my stomach in the early weeks, very normal apparently, everything moving and stretching.

flick how're you getting on? Love the bump pics, you look fab!!

Better stop gatecrashing now, we're away on holiday, discovering how different it is with a LO :o

MCT76 · 04/05/2012 11:37

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your advice and for giving me a bit of perspective. It's good to hear about your experiences as everything is still so new and unknown.

Prickly: Hope the cramps have subsided. From what I've read, they are normal unless they become like stabbing pains in which case it's best to get them checked out but hopefully, you'll be feeling better by now.

Late: Is today your last day in work? You must be feeling pleased and relieved that you can finally relax and prepare for the big day. Any news on the baby's position yet?

Highheel: I hope you're having a lovely time away and that you managed to go somewhere with decent weather. I spoke too soon when I said the sun was shining...I nearly blinked and missed it!

Quick update from me: My first home visit with the midwife went really well. I had two for the price of one as the one I would have had is moving on so she came with my new one to do the handover. Unfortunately, the new midwife seems rather shy and not very engaging but we'll see how it goes. They asked me all the standard questions and when I said I was driving myself crazy with worry, she rang the hospital straight away and got me an early scan for the following day (yesterday)! That was completely unexpected and I wouldn't have dreamed of requesting it so I was very happy with her response.

I went for the scan yesterday morning (shaking like a leaf) and it was such a huge relief to see the baby on the screen (last time it looked like a kidney bean but now I was able to see the head, legs and body!) and to learn that everything was fine. I was redated to 11+1 and my EDD has now been set at 21/11...I feel a lot better but I am still eagerly awaiting the 12-week scan (which will happen at 13 weeks) to feel a bit more reassured.

Hope you'll all have a great bank holiday!

KatherineW1 · 04/05/2012 12:28

Hello everyone! I'm new to mumsnet, altho am already 29+4.

MCT I know how you feel - I had a few complications in early pregnancy and was constantly paranoid. All was fine tho. Also I didn't show until 20 weeks... apparently it's coz I'm tall.

Prickly I had tummy cramps in the early stages too but they seem to have eased up now. Massaging your tummy might help?

Happy long weekend everyone :)

pixiestix · 05/05/2012 15:25

Hello Frolls,

Lovely to see lots of newbies! And to hear that everyone is progressing nicely Smile

Late are you a lady of leisure now? I hope everyone at work made a big fuss of you. Enjoy your last few weeks of freedom and get yourself settled on the sofa with lots of box-sets and chocolate! Grin

Hi Katherine. Welcome! Smile

Thats great that you got an extra scan MCT, it must have been a massive weight off your mind. And great to get bumped forward a few days too - every little helps in the first 12 weeks! FWIW I didn't start showing until about 17 weeks so I wouldn't be surprised if you can't see any physical changes yet.

Prickly I had feelings like I had done too many sit ups between 6-8 weeks. I think its called round ligament pain or something similar. It starts pretty early and can go on for ages as your womb expands, but mine disappeared again way before the second trimester.

Where is our Flick? Hope everything is ok with you and your little bruiser Grin

Beeble I would definitely go for the 30th Sept finish date if I were you. They class you as full-term from 37 weeks so you will be term by then, and you will be so massive and uncomfortable that you will be really relieved to get out of there! And you really don't want your waters to go at your desk! Grin

I am at work today and it is such a holiday compared to being with DD! Blush I think we might be hitting the terrible twos a bit early. She has got to be one of the naughtiest babies on the planet - but she is very, very cute so she gets away with murder!

Flickstar · 05/05/2012 19:05

Hello ladies,

Sorry I have been AWOL. I've had a bit of a nightmare week and have been in hospital from Tuesday until last night Sad The baby is absolutely fine but on Tuesday afternoon at work I just came over all funny- exhausted, fluey, burning up, shivery, headache etc. I was heading to the drop in assessment centre anyway to take in a urine sample but when I got there I felt so dreadful I asked them to check me out.

The urine sample showed ANOTHER urine infection and my temperature was up at 38.6 and my pulse rate was 137. They decided to admit me so I could have fluids and antibiotics through a drip. I had a rough couple of days but started to feel much better on Thursday so they swapped my antibiotics to tablet form. I have a course of ten days worth of antibiotics and then will be on one a day until the end of the pregnancy to try and hold the nasties at bay.

Any added complication is that they did a scan on my kidneys and found a 6cm thing on my left kidney. I say 'thing' as they are not sure whether it is an abscess caused by the recurrent urine infections having spread to my kidneys, causing a kidney infection and then an abscess or whether it is a cyst. I have to go back for a repeat kidney scan on the 15th May and they will hopefully be able to tell then as if it is an abscess it should have shrunk dramatically by then due to the antibiotics and if it is a cyst it should be similar or slightly smaller/lager.

What a saga! As I said, I'm feeling much better but still absolutely wiped out and finding it hard to not do jobs around the house etc even though I know I need to rest. Currently deciding when I should go back to work too...

Anyway, enough about me!

pixie hope your little angel is being good Grinwhat sorts of naughty things is she doing?!

Welcome katherine I saw you on the July thread too- am 30+2 so we are very similar with our due dates! What is your date and we will add you to our list?

MCT fab news on your scan and not long now until you have another peek! I have a scan at 11+1 and then 12+6 and the difference in size was incredible! YOu will really notice it. Such a special and exciting time.

Hope you've had a lovely break HH Looking forward to seeing some pics of you and your little princess away.

Hope you had a good last day and week at work late! Wow- must feel amazing :) Hope you've eased into your maternity leave nicely! Do you have much to do are all you all set?

Welcome prickly! I remember having all sorts of cramps and niggles and running to the loo every 5 minutes to see if there was blood. Such a worrying time but the days do pass and you will get there.

Hope everyone is well and lots of love to all

pixiestix · 06/05/2012 10:31

Oh my god Flick you poor thing. What a horrible week. I'm so glad that your little boy is all safe even though you must be feeling rough as rats. I hate staying in hospital - you get so overtired from all the bright lights and constant noise disrupting your natural rhythms that often you feel about a million times worse coming out than you did going in!

I'm glad they have managed to get your fever down and have a plan for the rest of your pregnancy. What a nightmare Sad So the "thing" might either be the cause OR the effect of all these infections then?? Confused At least you don't have to wait too long for your scan.

You absolutely MUST rest and not start pottering about doing baby prep. If you have to do something because you are going mad then write out lots of nice lists Grin but don't move from that sofa!

T is just a little monkey at the moment. She seems to have upped a gear and gone into turbo-naughtiness. If you take your eye off her for a second she is drawing on the walls, painting the carpet, dumping teddies in the toilet, emptying the kitchen bin.... And it really does only take her a second or two to create the most amazing carnage - I thought that was something people just said because they were posting on MN for hours while drinking tea and letting their LO's run riot! Grin She does it all with a smile though, little cutie!

LateToThisBabyMalarky · 06/05/2012 16:56

Oh Flick, how horrendous for you, you poor thing Shock - you must have been so anxious about the baby, so relieved he's ok. Good to hear you're back at home and feeling better, take it easy on yourself though. Wink

Katherine, lovely to have you join us Smile, hope you are sailing through your pg, and if not this is a good place to come and off-load!

MCT Ooooo! you got a scan! I LOVE scans, it's so magical getting that glimpse of the little life growing inside with its little heart pumping away! Glad you're feeling better about things, worrying too much isn't good for anybody.

So, I am Officially on maternity leave! It still feels very surreal, it's odd leaving work, but not really leaving... My team were so sweet with a lovely card full of messages and an envelope full of JL vouchers. I had to make a speech and cried (doesn't take much to set me off these days Blush), and my desk look horrible & empty, ready for my cover to move in and set up home there (I told him not to get too comfy Wink). I will miss work, just as something to pass the time if nothing else, but not going to miss the commute on the tube every day!

Beeble, just to drop in that I felt amazingly well & energetic right up until about 2 weeks ago when the bump started getting heavy, I started feeling tired and big & swollen. If you'd asked me 3 weeks ago if I would be ready to finish work just before 36 weeks I would have told you that I was leaving work too early & could probably have pushed on for another week or even two. But the last week, particularly the commute, has been really hard work and I'm actually quite relieved to be on leave now. Having such disturbed sleep (due to having to go to the loo 4 times a night, and the heartburn & cramps...) really takes it out of you. I second Pixie, if your choice is to finish at 30 weeks or 37, finish at 30 and have yourself a rest before it all kicks off! Wink

I hit the Drop Zone next week (36 weeks) Shock and it's all now getting rather real...! I see the midwife on Tuesday and they are doing a scan to see if the baby is still breech. If it is (and it feels to me like it still is), I may be meeting him/her sooner than I expected!
Our house move is turning into the longest run-up to exchange in the world, ever - it's really frustrating, solicitors sending everything by snail mail etc. I am getting more & more resigned to a) baby coming first or, b) completion & delivery happening on the same day Grin! We are going shopping on Monday to get some essentials from Mothercare etc (I think I may be nesting, I'm suddenly a bit anxious that we don't have anything!). I'm also going to pack my hospital bag, just in case......!

Hope everyone's enjoying the long weekend, even though the weather is pants Grin

Flickstar · 09/05/2012 10:02

Morning all,

Thanks for your sympathies late and pixie. Am feeling so much better but just absolutely wiped out so easily! I suspect my body is a bit knackered from trying to fight an infection and grow a baby. I'm back at work tomorrow and a little bit worried about how that will go but I'm hoping that the more I do, the less tired I'll feel!

How did you get on at the midwife and the scan yesterday late? Hope all well.

Hope everyone else is well and enjoying their little beans

LateToThisBabyMalarky · 11/05/2012 17:33

Hello everyone

I feel like i've doubled in size since last week, my feet definitely have! And the heartburn, oh my word, the heartburn!
It's not been the most restful first week of mat leave as I've been running around playing courier for documents for our flat sale & house purchase - worth it though as it looks like we'll be completing on 30 May, so hopefully we'll get about 10 minutes in the new place before baby arrives!

I saw the midwife on Tuesday and she couldn't really tell if the baby has turned or not (was a long wait for the scan so didn't bother this time)... Anyway, seeing the ob and having a scan on Monday, so that should clear things up. I need to pack my hospital bag next week - FTFs who have been there & done that, any tips for what to take that doesn't appear on all the lists? Smile We also have our first NCT class tomorrow, eeek! This really is happening, isn't it!

Flick, hope going back to work didn't wipe you out too much

Enjoy the SUNSHINE everyone, how exciting is that - a whole weekend without rain apparently! Grin

highheelsandequations · 11/05/2012 20:06

flick hope you're feeling better, take it easy lovely :)

late you have my sympathies with the feet, mine have never been the same since! Re hospital bag, the only thing I used during labour from mine was bendy straws to drink lots of cold water, although I wasn't in hospital long before having Rose so might have used more (i.e. magazines, books etc.) if I'd been longer. After giving birth, lots of big maternity pads, big pants, nightie, slipper socks, chocolate biscuits, nice tea bags, shower stuff, make up, camera and phone, plus comfy clothes to go home in. I also appreciated having a notebook and pen to write down things I wanted to remember. Didn't use half the stuff in my bag!

Flickstar · 12/05/2012 11:19

Happy Saturday ladies- the sun is shining!

Hope NCT goes well late- we started ours on Monday too. I have a real life friend in London, your neck of the woods actually who is starting her NCT classes today too. I wonder if you're in the same class?!

Feeling back to normal now- repeat kidney scan on Tues to check out my cyst/abscess and then 32 week growth scan on Thurs. hope your scan goes well on Mon late- come back and let us know how you get on. Big congrats on your house too! It's all coming together for family late!

Thanks for bag tips hh

Hope beeble, pearly and mct are ticking along ok- how many weeks now ladies?

Oh, I meant to say... A lady in my due in July thread gave birth yesterday Shock 30+2 and baby boy doing well so far. EEEKK

Beeblebear · 12/05/2012 15:01

Good morning. I'm still lurking about, but can only post from my phone, which is a bit of a pain sometimes.

17 weeks now. Seems like time is gping by so fast.

Bump is definately getting more noticeable, and I.m feeling more comfortable in maternity tops that show it off. So I have been getting lots more.. On I didn't know! Comments and congratulations.

Been feeling pretty good, apart from a few aches and pains.. Next scan may 24. Taking my dh and my 90 year old grandma.
also have an apt on mon, hoping to hear the heartbeat (keep fearing that I won't and something has happened...bring on the kicks!}

Glad you are feeling better flick!

I think I will be packing an ipod and earphones in my bag so I won't have to listen to all the screaming.

bunnygirl80 · 14/05/2012 02:05

late hospital bag essentials would be: big pants, maternity pads, comfy pjs, nipple cream, make up, camera and phone (and spare batteries/charger). I would also suggest you take lots of food and drink. I have never ever been as hungry and thirsty as I was in the week after I gave birth. I'd wake at 3am to feed Will and then need to eat something myself, and I must have been drinking 4 litres of water each day as well. Trashy mags are a good bet as well, if you get a baby like mine was that just sleeps and sleeps it's actually quite boring for long stretches of time, but my brain was in no way up to doing anything intellectual, so reading the latest celeb gossip was a good way to pass the time.

flick glad you're feeling better

DessieLou · 14/05/2012 13:42

Hi Guys!I really need to come on here more often as it takes me ages to catch up with evreything!
beeble thank you for the book recommendation. I got Your Pregnancy week by week and it's pretty good, so thanks for that.
Late thank you for the well wishes to myself and beeble, the bad feeling are subsiding and I'm determined to enjoy this pregnancy (well, as much as you can when feeling crappy!).
Prickly congratulations and welcome! I also lurked for a while and feltlike a fraud, you'll soon get your head round it though.
MCT our due dates are only a couple weeks apart, I'm 2nd Dec. I hope you're not feeling as worried. I'm also a bit isolated as I live in the middle of nowhere in Scotland (takes an hour to get to the midwife unit for appointments!). I'm actually a bit worried about it as I don't want to be isolated when the baby arrives. We could move to the nearest town (15 miles away) but my business is in the village.....dilema! Confused
Katherine welcome! When are you due?
Flick hope you're feeling better. Good luck with your kidney scan tomorrow.
All good with me. The nausea has almost disappeared (touch wood) and I'm not as exhausted as I was, depending on how busy the restaurant has been. Is it possible that I'm starting to get a bump at 11 weeks?! That can't be right, surely?! I have a growth scan in a couple of weeks and my mum will be visiting so she's going to come along which will be nice. She's so far away that it'll be nice for her to get involved a wee bit. Nothing else to report. I hope this doesn't time out, I really can't be arsed to re type it! Smile

DessieLou · 14/05/2012 13:42

It worked! Hurrah! Grin

Beeblebear · 14/05/2012 20:20

Dessie - nice to hear from you. Glad that you are starting to feel better.

I think baby hit a major growth spurt last week as I was absolutely exhausted. Fell asleep straight after getting home 3 nights and by 8 the other two night. I think as a result of all that growing i have felt some right propper kicks yesterday and today... definately no mistaking for gas gurgles!

Hope to hear the heart beat today, and scan in 10!

must get back to work now

LateToThisBabyMalarky · 17/05/2012 10:17

Hellooo Frolickers!

highheels and Bunny thanks for the tips, I haven't got around to packing the bag yet (I actually haven't even bought a suitable little case yet!) and DH is getting jittery Grin

Flick hope you're still feeling ok & those antibiotics have drummed the infection out of town Wink

We're hopefully exchanging on our house sale & purchase today - very exciting! If it all happens as it should, we'll be moving on 30th!!!!! THEN I get to nest properly and sort out a nursery for my little baby Smile

We also started our NCT course last week, soooooo relieved that the group wasn't an absolute freak show, everyone seems safely normal Grin (Flick if the course your friend is doing is in Hammersmith, PM me her name & I'll tell you if I've met her! How weird would THAT be?!!!) I really recommend NCT, the teacher was very good - she was totally honest about labour etc., but without being hysterical. And she went through all the options available (which is the opposite of what I heard they do, so relieved about that!). The breastfeeding counsellor was also very good - she showed this DVD of a snuffly newborn, skin to skin, literally crawling about on mum and finding the breast itself. Amazing and lovely and had all the preggos in the room close to tears! Grin Again, she covered combination feeding as well which I wasn't expecting her to do.

Oh yes, and baby has finally turned Grin- as long as it doesn't flip back (which they can do apparently, if they've been breech for a while) I'm hoping we have escaped the surgeon's scalpel!

LateToThisBabyMalarky · 17/05/2012 10:19

Beeble how lovely for you being able to feel those kicks, it's so amazing to think of the little life dancing around in there isn't it!

Dessie, glad you're feeling better about the pg Wink

MCT76 · 17/05/2012 11:40

Hi everyone! I've been keeping quiet for a while as I was counting down the days to the 12-week scan which took place earlier this morning (although I am 13+1, apparently). DH was able to join me for the first time so it was lovely to see the baby together and it looks like we have a lively one as it kept moving around giving the sonographer a hard time! We've got our first set of pictures and it's now 3 working days until the results of the nuchal test so I'll be waiting for those with bated breath...

Flick: I'm so sorry about your ordeal and pleased to learn that you're now on the mend. It must have been quite worrying and draining at the time and I hope you're now back to your normal self.

Dessie: Glad the nausea's gone and that you're keeping yourself busy so you don't think too much (like I do Confused). I've also felt at times that a tiny bump was beginning to form but, on other days, I see nothing at all so I wonder if it's more to do with what I've been eating than anything else...It seems to be different for each woman but, on average, it tends to appear after week 16 for first timers, from what I've read..I can't wait!

Beeble: It must be so amazing to feel those first kicks...do they hurt at all or is it just a bit uncomfortable? Do they wake you up at night?

Late: Hope the exchange goes smoothly...have you started to pack? Hope you'll have enough help so as not to exert yourself too much. Good to know that you're enjoying the NCT course. I haven't even looked at any of that yet but I know I'll need every explanation available as I am clueless about babies...Great news about the baby turning! Fingers crossed that you won't need any additional assistance.

I thought we were out of the woods weatherwise but it's rubbish here yet again! Thankfully, I stayed out as much as I could at the weekend to top up my vitamin D reserves which were totally depleted...

MCT how lovely for you to have had your scan (and jumped a week into the bargain!). It's amazing to see them wriggling around, and amazing to see just how developed the little baby is already! FWIW, I didn't get a discernible 'bump' until prob around 18 weeks, but my figure changed before then - a thickened waist and bigger boobs! There will be plenty of time for you to enjoy having a bump! Grin
Also, re the NCT classes - I actually had to ask the teacher how a baby should be dressed! THAT'S how clueless DH & I are!

My DH sent me this today - wish we'd done something like this - although he has taken some lovely pictures of me & the growing bump for the family album

The weather really is pants isn't it - although I have had plenty of people say to me that us preggos should be grateful it's not too warm / hot as we would be rather uncomfortable. But it would be nice if it just stopped raining....
