What a handsome puss fish - he looks a real charmer. Big hugs to you if you're missing him extra today.

Sproglet has been jumping around lots today - so lovely to feel. Almost makes up for my brain fog today.

ghosteditor · 20/09/2011 16:14

hey everyone, just a flying visit while I'm busy at work (it had to happen some day Grin) to add more photos of furry beasts. DH had a fairly short lived attempt at 'a year in photos' on flickr a couple of years ago and we have a few lovely pictures of the felines on his flickr page if anyone wants a look? This is monster cat in her less monstrous and generally more present days and this is my beautiful furry home-loving feline.

cakes I'll be sure to take a peek at your portfolio when I get a minute!

We've had some lovely news this week: SIL (with whom I really get on, probably more so than DH) has just accepted a fab job offer in Oxford, which is just down the road from us. She'll be uprooting from 200 miles away to take the job, which is a great career move but is fab for us as she really wants to be nearer to her niece/nephew (and is fab with kids and will be happy to babysit from time to time). The master plan to uproot both or our families and make them move nearer to is is underway (mwahahaha)!

fishandlilacs · 20/09/2011 16:26

OOh ghost-youre a ginger cat fan too. And your little tabby is just gorgeous.

We have got the title for thread page five-"SPD and a feline or 3"

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/09/2011 16:31

lol @ suggested thread title.

Has anyone else found they're getting really dry (and therefore itchy) nipples/areolae? Like - rub Bio oil in twice a day and still dry kind of dry? It's getting irritating - how can you scratch your nipples in public w/o drawing the wrong kind of attention?

Wormshuffler · 20/09/2011 16:41

Hi Ladies
Do we have any experienced breast feeders on this thread? I was wonering if there is anyway to "prepare your nipples for breast feeding"? I keep reading so much about sore and cracked nipples and wondered if there was a magic solution?
I am currently cat-less :( we have lost 2 to the busy road near us within 2 years. Think I will give up, it's not fair on the poor things...........
I'm going off now to stalk you all look at your cute cat pics!

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/09/2011 16:51

Wormshuffler - whilst I don't generally condone keeping cats indoors sometimes it's the best thing for the cat. Have you considered doing as a friend of mine did and getting a deaf or otherwise 'special' cat who is not safe to be allowed out? People don't always want special needs cats, but sometimes they're a perfect fit :)

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/09/2011 16:52

PS - ghost have you considered confining Sophie to house arrest barracks for a couple of weeks to try and break scary neighbour of her habit? I know cat litter is gross, but at least you can make DH deal with it whilst your pregnant! lol

ghosteditor · 20/09/2011 17:00

cakes I have considered it and we even had the cat flap on in only overnight, but she didn't come home. I'm just not sure - poor Penny is very beautiful but a bit stupid and she genuinely doesn't understand what it is she does to make the cat flap open. If we lock it, she will just bash away for hours thinking she hasn't quite got it right. It's really stressful for her and I have to think about her too! And all that and Soph doesn't even necessarily come home every day. I am seriously considering it, though, and would just have to persevere I think.

worm no experience here I'm afraid. Would be interested to hear, though! And cakes is right, cats can be indoor. Soph's kittens were very ill when they were born at the rescue centre and the only surviving two had serious lasting effects (look at 'wobbly cats' on youtube and you'll see what they had, little cuties). They're perfectly happy animals and will live a normal life, but shouldn't really be left to go outside. Plus, white cats or deaf/blind cats etc are often better off inside.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/09/2011 17:04

You could just shut off the room with the cat flap in it, if that makes sense? We don;t have a cat flap, our boys go in and out of the bathroom window, so if we want to stop one of them going out we just shut him out fo the bathroom. I must remember to shut the bathroom door as a general rule, though - I got a very lively live rat racing round the flat earlier. Ugh.

redheadbedhead · 20/09/2011 17:06

aaarrrgh!!! so many posts since i last checked in!!! you guys are brilliant!

will try and remember all the things i want to comment on....

butterfly - the idea of a babywearing course is BRILLIANT. How did you find out about it? I'm going to a 'sling-meet' soon, but i wonder how different that is? I really want to wear my baby as much as poss - although if he really is as freakishly massive as tests and bumps reveal, I may not be wearing him for long....... eeeeek!!

lovely pics cakes - I see you are a proper photographer!! I am just an amateur hoping for the best.... if anyone wants to see my pics, if only just to check out my beautiful feline (she's feeling left out) they're here

itchy nips - OMG!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one. Trying to surreptitiously scratch nipples while teaching 16yr old boys is VERY DIFFICULT. Nigh impossible.

sorry to all of you having work/health woes Sad - hope things start looking up soon.

anyone else heard that there's a big freeze coming our way next month...brrrr... I'm desperately bidding for maternity coats on ebay in the hope of getting a bargain but so far I've lost out on every single one!

Wormshuffler · 20/09/2011 17:07

Ah I had considered an indoor cat, then I could get one of those expensive rare ones.............however the thought (and cost) of cat litter doesn't sit too well with me. Also I love it when they see you while you are out and about in the neighbourhood and like to walk you home. Our old cat which we had for 14 years used to walk us nearly all the way to school. Bless him, I do miss Simba.......

fishandlilacs · 20/09/2011 17:07

worm I bf'd dd for 12 months. Does that make me experienced? :)

heres what i think i know on the subject of cracked nips.

I am afraid that sore nips can be part and parcel of it at the very beginning, I had one very sore cracked nipple after dd suckled for 6 hours straight when we were in hospital-I was smacked out on morphine and she was latched on and because of my c section there was no milk there and she had drained the colostrum. It was the efforts of one lovely midwife that got me through to the next day when my milk did come in. My dh came to visit that day and his greeting to me was "Hello Jordan"

Breast milk is actually incredibly healing in itself, if the latch is right then there should be no friction on the nipple at all so it is bathed in a mouthful of breastmilk as baby feeds, this will help the pain and the healing. The let down can be a bit painful at first-I used to count through it and breathe.

There is one ESSENTIAL product that shall not ever be compromised on: repeat after me ladies LANSINOH LANSINOH LANSINOH. It is expensive but it is VITAL if your nips are sore. Pack some in your hospital bag. My old midwife described it as honey for sore nipples-it softens, heals, creates a bit of a barrier.

One old wives tale from my dear grandma was to drink some milk myself-the midwife poo pooed it saying there was no correlation between what you drank and making milk-you just need to be thoroughly hydrated. But my grandma breastfed 11 kids so I felt inclined to listen to her. DH bought me a 2 pinter of milk which I drank and my milk came in the next day-after 6 days of nothing.

and keep twiddling-nipple stimulation helps at lot.

My nips feels all tingly and weird now after talking about it. Feels like the let down-if I start leaking now worm i'm blaming you :)

redheadbedhead · 20/09/2011 17:14

sorry - x-posted with a million cat responses! ooops

Wormshuffler · 20/09/2011 17:14

Ah thanks for the info fish I wonder if putting some of that Lansinoh stuff before for a few weeks would help? It surely wouldn't do any harm......... maybe I will get DH to help with the nipple tweaking Wink I did that succesfully to start labour last time! Still ended up with a section again though...
Ha at blaming me for leakage!

knittiekitty · 20/09/2011 17:26

I second the Lansinoh recommendation - it's amazingly soothing and might even help cakes and redhead avoid ending up on Youtube for scratching nips in public! I 'failed' at bf last time but have high hopes of doing better this time so will remember your grandma's tip fish thank you.

I was at a children's party last weekend and two other expectant mums had smaller bumps than mine but both are due within the next 8 weeks. I was embarrased but at my MW appt today she said my bump measurement was exactly in the middle of chart. Strange how we all look so different, I do feel much bigger this time. Have to do the glucose test in 3 weeks as still weeing too much sugar. I thought the starving test I did last week had cleared me.

Will check out babywearing as there is a mum drops off a child in dd's class and she has a baby tied to her back in a different coloured scarf each day. I'm so impressed, you can just see his/her eyes peeking out and not a grizzle in sight. I can't imagine how she achieves it though so I might stick to my babybjorn.

Fryn · 20/09/2011 17:42

I third the Lansinoh recommendation! As it's so pricey though, I'm not sure I'd put it on in advance - can't really see the advantage (and it has a very odd consistency - like thick vaseline). It's more useful to soothe and protect once BF is happening I'd say (but don't quote me).

Everyone's busy recommending a sling from mothercare to me at the moment (begins with K? Typically I can't find it on their website) - looks very snug for newborns, but as it's elasticy, not sure how long it would last. Would be interested to hear what those of you looking into it come across!

Dammit - all this nipple talk has made mine suddenly get very itchy. That'll be fun on the tube!

www.amazon.co.uk/Lansinoh-Cream-Sore-Nipples-Cracked/dp/B0006JLIFG/ref=tag_stp_s2_edpp_url

Lansinoh on amazon-cheapest I have seen it.

fishandlilacs · 20/09/2011 18:22

also if youre not fussed about 2nd hand-theres lots of people on ebay selling unopened or partially used tubes. I'm watching afew to see what price they go for and i'm bidding on a boxed unopened tube-but if anyone ourbids me whyiouttaa!

Grin
Spagbolagain · 20/09/2011 18:29

Oh yes, lansinoh, marvellous stuff. And it lasts for ages. You only need it for the first few weeks, and I think I have half a tube left from DS1. Will need to check export date!!

As someone said, if your latch is good you shouldn't have major issues. Yes there's a bit of soreness as your nips get used to it, which the lansinoh helps with. And I always had a slightly uncomfortable let-down. But if there's anything more severe than that it's best to ask a bf counsellor for help.

ChocaMum · 20/09/2011 18:31

Hello everyone, it's been a bit mad busy here so sorry for lack of contact.

Definitely get lasinoh cream anyone who is planning on bf, it's amazing and essential. I bf for 15 mo with DD and stopped because I became pregnant and therefore started vomiting. Also stock up on dome good DVD's and box sets of any series you like, you sit there forever when bf in the first couple of months.

I have the sleepy wrap carrier which is s big piece of cloth basically but has a bit of give without being too stretchy so it's the only one you don't have to re-tie putting baby back in. I managed to use on DD until my bump grew too big fairly recently with no back ache. The traditional baby slings made my shoulders and back ache from really early on.

Right can anyone suggest some slow cooker recipes please, just got one this weekend and really fancied a biryani but I can't seem to find a recipe. Thanks! :)

redheadbedhead · 20/09/2011 18:35

fish I'll fight you back and anyone else if they bid for my next maternity coat attempt as well!!

fishandlilacs · 20/09/2011 18:51

oooh-i have a slow cooker library book here-i think it has a biryani in it.

fishandlilacs · 20/09/2011 18:57

no i lied, no biryani recipe

knittiekitty · 20/09/2011 19:04

Chocamum I was supposed to be making biriyani tonight but ran out of time so its spagbolagain for us. The recipe I use is in More Slow Cooker Recipes by Katie Bishop. It's nice and lazy as uses 425g jar of balti curry sauce, braising steak (or mince) and red lentils. I used basmati as per the recipe and it disintegrated so will be using easy cook next time - can't remember who recommended that instead. Anyway, it's a nice book and I got it for a few quid on amazon. Not much help for tonight though sorry!

ChocaMum · 20/09/2011 19:28

Thanks ladies! I will have a look on amazon tonight and maybe try your recipe for tomorrow, sounds nice and simple, just the way I like it! Yes I remember somebody mentioning easy cook rice too, maybe it was on thread 3 or 2, I lose track! Anyway I'm hoping I will get good use out of this slow cooker, especially as I actually want to eat now, finally!
