oh arse, just re-read my post, congrats chip Grin

SnoozleDoozle · 22/08/2011 16:00

Damn. Damn damn damn!!! Rang the hospital for the results of the glucose tolerance test, bright and breezy, fully expecting 'oh, that was normal, cheerio!'. But no. Reading is too high, and I have to attend the diabetic clinic. Crap. The worst thing is, I made the mistake the other day of consulting Dr Google to see what gestational diabetes actually means, and NHS direct is full of horror stories about detached placentas, birth complications, stillbirth, massive babies and inducing the birth early. But as consultant has said I'm not suitable for induction, that would mean a definite C-section, just when I had myself psyched up for VBAC. Arrrgggh. Damn this sweet'n'sugary blood!

PamSco · 22/08/2011 16:03

Cep I asked the same about announcements a few pages back - wasn't sure what other cohorts have done. Somebody said there was a birth announcements thread but I guess keeping it in the stats thread is good too?

Chip Just thought - you've probably got a few weeks to wait for the post-natal thread to really get rocking and rolling Wink

snoozle step away from Dr google. There are increased risks with having GD but it has been detected at a relatively early stage in the pregnancy & the diabetic specialists will help you put things into place to reduce your sugar levels & thus reducing the risks. Hope all goes well at your appt.

caz ((HUGS)) hope that you can get through the next few weeks & you can look forward to Xanders arrival x x

cookie9 · 22/08/2011 16:26

Chip glad you have managed to get a few hugs and hope you get lots more very soon.

Caz can't imagine how stressed you must feel. We are all good listeners so feel free to vent.

It is our engagement anniversary today so just got a lovely bunch of flowers and chocolates. We are going out for a meal tonight so resting this afternoon. My hip is bad today and I couldn't make it upstairs so had to sit on the stairs until fit enough to climb them.

Got a nice short sleeved nursing top in the jo jo maman bebe sale for just £5. Hope to wear it with a cardigan once junior arrives.

BuffyFan · 22/08/2011 16:28

snoozle I was going to say much the same as bump - they've caught it early so you can be thankful for that. They can help you do everything you can to minimise the risk at least. It's no fun I'm guessing, but Dr Google is just telling you the worst case scenario. Hope you get the support you need to manage the condition.

Off work this week to do some stuff around the house and then visit the parents. We've got a pale green paint up in the nursery now, which is less pale than I expected. But I'm thinking it will look good once the furniture's in, it's just at the moment the room is just a big (well little) expanse of green. The carpet's being fitted in the morning, and then we can build furniture on Wednesday (well, DH can build while I supervise, make tea, etc etc...)

PamSco · 22/08/2011 16:57

Snoozle I echo Buffy and Bump step away from the scare stories...

Missed your post earlier. Crap news but manageable with excercise and diet, don't be down.

I get my test results tomorrow.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 22/08/2011 17:06

snoozle do not panic! When pg with DD I was given a basic GTT (fasting bloods, sugary drink and then one blood taken). It came back borderline high (about 7.8 I think), so they gave me a full GTT which is same fasting bloods, sugar drink and then blood taken every 30mins for 2 hours to see exactly what happens. Result = no diabetes.
perhaps ask for the full one?

Also, there is now some research that suggests gestational diabetes is just the body adjusting to pregnancy and actually isn't the horror that you read about. Not sure about that one. I'm umming and ahhing about mine - the mw is coming to my house on bank hol Monday to do my 28wk bloods so said she'd do it then. I think it gives her a chance to nosey at the house if I'm intending to deliver there.
I have a feeling that unless my blood sugars are uncontrollable, then even if I am diabetic I will still be asking for a homebirth....but that's just me.

On a lighter note, your comments about monitors are interesting. As you say, each to your own and yes, you always hear your newborn crying. What I found useful though was when I was in the shower and she was still asleep, I could put the monitor in my view and the lights would flash if I couldn;t hear her ovr the noise of the shower.
It's also been useful as she's got older and more reliable to hear her when we've been watching a loud film or having dinner with friends and not so alert cos she's not a newborn anymore.

Caliphora · 22/08/2011 17:21

I need a sanity check here:

Thursday night I had the hip incident, monitored at hospital at Sprout was fine.
Normal movements, little bit more vigorous than usual due to hating the Doppler.
Friday fine, a bit less movement, but picking up in the evening.
Saturday I had a really bad stomach, and Sprout didn't move as much as usual - put this down to being tired after Thursday night/Friday morning.
Sunday - barely any movement during the day, but kept me awake for half an hour squiggling betwen 1.30 and 2 am...
Today - no significant movement so far - despite eating sugary stuff/drinking fizz/playing loud music/having a glass of cold water.

What do we think? Call the midwife or chill out?

Katiebeau · 22/08/2011 17:30

Call the midwife - I couldn't chill-out until I had done so with DD. This bubba kicks just before I call. Got as far as the door in the surgery several times with DD before she booted me! Do you have a drop in clinic you can go to?

Caliphora · 22/08/2011 17:32

No drop in clinic - I'm going to monitor movement for two hours before calling (That way I'm not just being insane)

voodoomunkee · 22/08/2011 17:36

Call. For your own peace of mind!

Gone to bed for a lie down as have now got earache and a sore sore throat.

voodoomunkee · 22/08/2011 17:38

Possible bubs has turned round.? So is kicking into space?

TwoJackRussellsandabean · 22/08/2011 17:40

Afternoon all,

snoozle I've just got my GTT results back and am 9 point something so am officially joining the gestational diabetes road trip. I googled it too and there are some horror stories out there, but I've taken from it that it's better to know now and get things under control and sorted out rather than have the monster baby that my friend had a couple of weeks ago, who was 11 lbs, now that's gotta hurt!! Plus, you get extra scans to keep an eye on bub and if you do get a section or induced, then at least there is no waiting around for over a week waiting for little miss or mr to make an appearance. Just wish I didn't have to go to quite so many hospital appointments!!!

Caz, not too much longer before you will be 32 weeks and over and you can hopefully relax a little, lets hope the next couple of weeks fly by for you...

bumpandisaacsmum · 22/08/2011 17:47

cali when I had same thoughts re:movement I was advised by MW to sit eat sugary & drink cold then sit quietly with my hands resting on stomach & focus purely on baby's movement for an hour - in that hour baby moved once or twice gently but not as normal so I could then report that to MW specifically. May be worth sitting quietly for an hour then call as then you can say specifically what movement you have felt. It is quite possible baby has moved to a new position & you can't feel the movement in the same way (as baby did to me as when monitored I could hear baby moving but felt very little!!). Good luck x x

PamSco · 22/08/2011 18:01

Cali The Boy has been very quiet today, about 2pm I thought I couldn't remember any kicking when I woke this morning which is when I get the normal trammelling.

So I had a Cornetto at my desk, nowt, bottle of icey water, nowt. Walked back to my car nothing to notice. Just had a lie down with no tv or radio so I don't get distracted, and I can feel hiccups - just little bumpy hiccups. So I sat up and he started jumping up and down on my bladder.

Pretty sure he's been head down since Friday but he must have turned in the night because he definitely seems feet down now. I think he get's quieter after a shift in position.

OP posts:
Caliphora · 22/08/2011 18:56

Well, as soon as I laid down on my side to try focusing on any movement, she woke up.
All kicks and wriggles now for the last hour.

She's a bit too big to hide movements now - I'm 30 weeks today and I'm huuuuuuge.

goldmaple · 22/08/2011 19:26

chip Congrats! OUr first Nov baby! Glad to hear you are both doing well and will say a prayer for your continued recovery! I'm sorry that it all happened sooner than you'd have like and that you had to have a hysterectomy as well but you sound positive. A little girl after 3 boys:) so great! She will be very spoiled (and well protected - her poor future boyfriends)

caz I hope the next few weeks pass quickly for you. I can't imagine how you are feeling but I hope you are taking it easy and I will say a pray for you and xander as well.

cali Glad to hear she's moving:) Bubba does the same thing to me, no movement (I sat down and started to count and only got 5 in 1.5 hours Shock then about 50 in the next 2 hours)

voodoomunkee · 22/08/2011 19:39

Good to hear Cali! Not about being huge but about bubs! I've dragged myself onto the settee and am going to watch rubbish tv and hope the earache and sore throat I've got vanish. Just watched some clips of one born every minute online, not the American one. Scary!

Caliphora · 22/08/2011 19:44

OBEM is the mainstay of my labour education - Poor DP freaks out over the opening clips where the baby "pops out" dramatically. :D

I'm craving strawberry laces and ice cream.

voodoomunkee · 22/08/2011 19:57

Haha my OH just shivers and walks away! I crave washing powder. I did with both my other dc's so not too shocking this time round!

cep · 22/08/2011 19:58

sorry to hear the not wanted gtt results, i have my test this friday. have a feeling mine may not be too good either, but don't know when i get the results. Definately step away from google, people don't tend to put good news on there just the bad. If it is something you're woried about it may be worth doing a thread on the pregnancy bit to get a bit of advice, or there may already be a thread on there to stalk.

cali so glad baby started moving again, it is so scary when you start thinking you haven't felt anything in a while. I'm addicted to ice lolly's at the moment, partly because it's good for making baby move.

right i'm off to have a bath, hoping it hasn't overrun while i'm down here. Hope you all have a good night.

Caliphora · 22/08/2011 20:02

I may get the cheap cheap ice lollies tonight - I need a sure fire way of waking her up!

smilingcl · 22/08/2011 20:14

This thread feels like everything is hotting up now, we've got weeks rather than months of waiting ahead of us!

My bump only gets kicking action when I'm sat or laid down, or if I hunch over my computer too much. Noise, cold and other stimuli don't seem to do anything.

DP is in the kitchen with our friend ripping out the kitchen before they go to football. EXCITING! Also slightly unnerving as his DIY skills are untested.

My job is to order the pizza :) Sorry baby. I did order Hawaiian so there's pineapple on there...

For the punani ache - trick is to keep your knees together - no lunging, get out of the car with your knees together, don't do breaststroke, even rolling out of bed. I find swapping sides regularly when I sleep reduces the pain in the morning it's like my hips need even pressure.

Maternity HR meeting today - last day is 14th October!!! Whoop. That gives me nearly 3 weeks off before the giblet is due to arse around the house putting things in the right place :)

Folicacid · 22/08/2011 21:03

Anyone else about to watch Horizon?
