A nice cosy place to accommodate our growing bumps and little wrigglers.

hi raven :) hope your scan is good.

i will probably get 27th (i think) April by LMP, but FF reckons 1 may, because i didn't ov till cd19 this cycle.

however, DS was 9 days late and still had to be extricated, so not holding out much hope for either tbh! Grin

this thread is v exciting with all the impending baby charters!

I've heard a lot of people finding the hypnobirth stuff really useful getdown, can you recommend a particular cd or anything as it sounds interesting?

did not POAS or temp today, have got a load of cheapies to use up though, so I might give in eventually!

nickstermum · 26/08/2011 20:55

Mrsa re latch... Literally stuff boob in their mouth!! Corey struggled for two nights was v dehydrated post birth and nothing was coming out so I had to top up! He grasped it but I had to use cushion rugby ball him and stuff it into the roof of his mouth!!! If I hadn't bf so successfully for two years before I would have caved the second day!!

Congrats all round!!

spilt so pleased for you and DP - hope you are enjoying lovely cuddles. Grin

jaggy very pleased to hear about your BFP - people are falling off this thread now with babies popping out so we need some fresh beans to keep us going Grin

So, when do I have to start stalking GetDown?? Wink

jaggythistle · 27/08/2011 10:07

very pleased to be here at last Terrys!

seems like sooo long since i last saw some of these names. :)

GetDownYouWillFall · 27/08/2011 10:32

Hi terrys good to see you again, how are you doing? Ha ha re, the stalking!! Grin I'm due on 14th Sep, but DD was born two weeks early so who knows??!! Am really hoping I make it to september at least though, and ideally until DD starts nursery school which is on the 6th. I want to at least be there to drop her off on her first day! I actually had some painful contractions last night, but they didn't last long and nothing today.

nix when you topped him up did you use formula or EBM? I've got a medela pump this time, hoping I can express at least if the first few days don't go too well.

jaggy I've been doing a hypnobirthing course but it's based around this book. I got a copy from the library first before enrolling on the course to see what it was all about. If you get a copy from the library you haven't lost anything if you decide it's not for you. However, I found so much of it made a lot of sense, and have since really embraced it. The downside is, it can be quite "americanised" in a kind of cheesey, flowery sense IYKWIM, so I have also bought these CDs which are english and a lot more "to my taste" but basically get at the same philosophy of natural, calm birth. I bought the set second hand on ebay, as I thought £40 was too much to pay new. They go for much less on ebay and seem to come up pretty regularly. Well worth it IMO!

LadyGoneGaga · 27/08/2011 14:22

BF going well now, GD. She feeds really well and is fairly efficient now, tends to cluster feed a bit and be a bit unsettled in the evening. However, she slept through for the first time last night . Grin I feel I deserve it since DS has only slept through a handful of times in his entire life so this could be a total fluke but 10pm til 5:45 can't be bad. She normally wakes up once or twice in the night for a feed and settles very easily so we are very lucky so far.

You must learn to feed lying down! That way you can just drift off while they sleep and pop them in their basket later on just co-sleep. Saved my life with DS who used to wake up every hour or two. There are some good tips and videos on Kelly Mom for that.

jaggythistle · 28/08/2011 07:59

getdown thanks, will have a look if i get on the pc while DS is napping!

spilttheteaagain · 28/08/2011 17:53

Right, Freya is sleeping and I have just eaten a massive bar of chocolate so here goes with the birth story... it is long, I warn you, but I wanted to write it all before I forget bits.

As you know I was contracting somewhere between every 5-20 mins from early on Friday, and Sunday eve we went into the local standalone MW unit for a check up and found I was 2-3cm so just on the verge of going into established labour. They gave us a quick tour of the maternity unit before we left and it was really lovely.

Went home and contractions got stronger and closer together. We didn't even try and sleep, fat chance! I was on my ball for a bit and listened to my natal hypnotherapy CD which really helped calm me down as I'd started getting a bit panicky with some of the strong contractions. As they got stronger I had repeated bouts of stinky pooing and felt really quite sick so we moved into the bathroom.

Sitting the wrong way round on the toilet and leaning on the cistern whilst someone massages your lower back really HARD is actually a really good way to get through contractions!

Lots of loud breathing and deliberate loooong outbreaths to try and stay in control.

At about 2am I'd got to the magic 3 contractions in 10 mins and we had to decide which hospital to phone... the actual city hospital where I was booked for the birth unit, or the standalone MW unit we'd been to earlier. So after all my fretting over the previous weeks about where to go, I changed my mind at the last minute Grin. I was starting to struggle to cope with the contractions and to be panicky about still being at home, so we went to the little MW unit at 4.30am, I was examined and was 5cm. I started coping a lot better again now I felt looked after and had a MW with me.

DH was an absolute star of a birth partner. Lots of encouragement and reassurance and firm massage. I'd explained to him earlier that the point of the massage was not to be soothing, it was to provide a sensation that competed with the contraction pain and distracted my brain from it. He got the idea and must have had sore fists by the end!
By 8.30am breathing, massage and positions were just not cutting it and I was starting to lose control, so asked for the gas and air and to get into the pool. They examined me and said I was 7-8cm.

Once in the pool and on the gas and air my perception of time went totally out of the window. The pool and the gas and air made it much easier to cope again for a couple of hours, but then it all just started to get too much. I was knackered and getting quite upset that it wasn?t all over. I seemed to only be dilating 1cm every 2hrs and a MW we?d seen earlier in the night reckoned you could practically set your watch by women doing 1cm per hour Sad.

I did say to DH at one point in a burst of frustration ?Well at least we didn?t pay for one of those hypnobirthing courses. Lying bastards, it does bloody hurt!? The MW said ?Well actually, you pretty much are hypnobirthing, you?re so relaxed and in control, listening to your body and letting it do what it needs to do. You?d have wasted your money!? I took some comfort in this. When I read my birth notes afterwards there were numerous references to how calm I was which amused me as in my brain I was busy fantasising about death and caesareans, whimpering quietly after the strongest contractions Grin

Eventually we got to 1pm and I was due my next VE. After 4 hours in the pool they were concerned that I was still stuck in the first stage. I also had a really full bladder and couldn?t seem to empty it. MW got out the catheter kit and the ARM kit. That did the trick. I was supported out of the pool and onto the loo and (thank God) managed to do a huge wee, which meant Freya?s head could actually descend.

On examination I was fully dilated. They started explaining to me that they could do ARM now. Mid discussion, my waters went anyway. There was some meconium in them so I was advised to give birth on land.

I was told to just go with my body now, and push when the urge came. I was on my knees leaning on the back of the bed. Urge to push??! Huh. Never came. I was just so sick of the whole thing I wanted it finished. I was barely registering the contractions now as I was so tired, so just kind of got on and pushed as and when and made an absolute racket bellowing and mooing about it!

They kept struggling to find Freya?s heartbeat because of my position, and when they did they registered a couple of decels so they got me to change into the semi-recumbent position. I remember actually not giving a toss what the outcome was. I just wanted it to stop. Pushed for all I was worth. They kept all saying what a fantastic job I was doing and how I was pushing really effectively and she was moving down fast. I kept thinking this meant she would be crowning with the next contraction... but there always seemed to be one more to go!

Eventually we got there, head starting to crown. The MWs were amazing and coached me carefully with when to push and when to pant and she emerged causing only one small 1st degree tear and some labial grazes. No stitches needed. Do your perineal massage girls!! The MW said afterwards that based on my skin type she thought I would tear badly, and she was amazed at how well my perineum stretched out. So I reckon it worked!

I was so utterly shocked by what crowning felt like that I was almost non plussed when Freya landed on my chest all blue and slimey and screaming. I?d lost the plot to some extent and kind of forgotten that I was actually having a baby! We let the cord finish pulsing and then it was clamped and DH cut it.

Our gorgeous girl weighed in at 7lb 7oz. She has a little bit of very fine brown hair and deep inky sapphire blue eyes. She does that adorable cross eyed thing when she looks at you because she can?t focus yet.

She was as exhausted as I was after the labour (established labour noted as 21 hours ? 19+ hours 1st stage, 1.5 hours 2nd stage and 20 mins 3rd stage), and consequently wouldn?t feed at all for the first 36 hours. I was hand expressing into syringes and giving it to her. She?s really struggled with latching as she?s got a slightly recessed bottom jaw and so a tendency to suck her bottom lip rather than opening up her mouth fully. She also HATED being manhandled onto the breast and screamed and screamed and thrashed around twisting her neck round madly. I got really distressed by it and felt totally crap. Eventually in the middle of the second night after taking the edge off her hunger with a syringe of EBM, and in peace and quiet alone, I got her to latch on and feed for 8 mins. It was some kind of miracle!

Since then the feeding has slowly improved. She tends to unlatch herself about 20 times in a 20 min feed which means that the feeds took aaaages to do, but we are now down to about 1hour to get 30 mins of feeding done in which is such amazing progress.

My milk came in in staggering quantities and we had to get a breast pump so I could take the first bit of milk off so she actually had a nipple she could get into her mouth ? otherwise it was a bit like trying to latch a kitten onto a football and just ended up with her screaming in frustration.

She?s been a bit jaundiced because of the slow start to feeding, but is now gaining weight again and improving in colour.

We are completely smitten and taking hundreds of photos. I am so in love Smile

And now she wants another feed.

Love to all xx

GetDownYouWillFall · 28/08/2011 19:24

Wow.

I am nearly crying now.

You are amazing xxx

LadyGoneGaga · 29/08/2011 22:21

Aw Spilt, an amazing story. So pleased for you. Congratulations to you and DH. Looking forward to seeing some pics! Grin

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 30/08/2011 10:25

spilt what an amazing story and didn't you do so very well!!! I'm glad you're settling in and sound like you are coping brilliantly.
Can't wait to see photos.

Getdown I hear what you are saying about formula feeding. I was so down about it at first and annoyingly, once DD was about 3 weeks old and got colic, one of the few things that would sooth her was to suckle on me but she only did it in the evening and once her colic eased, she was not interested and it was the action not the milk she wanted.
Like your DD, my DD is full of beans, very healthy, never had a day's illness in her life (except the usual colds/coughs but not even an upset tummy once ). I want to bf this one so much but I also know that formula is not the poison some militant bfeeders lovely Mnetters would have you believe!

MrsP81 · 30/08/2011 13:37

Awww, spilt that is such an amazing story. Can't wait to see some pics. Smile Lovely name too.

jaggythistle · 30/08/2011 14:31

Congrats agaibn spilt I had a wee lump in my throat reading your story. :)

Pippaandpolly · 30/08/2011 16:23

Another one with a tear in her eye! Congrats Spilt - sounds absolutely amazing :) Pretty please put photos on your profile!

spilttheteaagain · 30/08/2011 23:08

Couple of pics on my profile now pippa Smile

Hope all the bumps and babes are ok x

Pippaandpolly · 31/08/2011 12:23

Oh wow Spilt, she is utterly gorgeous!

I am 36+2 today and feeling really, really fat and fed up. Feel like I've been punched in between the legs, can't sit down for longer than a couple of minutes without aching really badly, really flu-ey, blocked nose every single night (gah!), weeing 1 - 2 times an hour like clockwork all day and night, dull period pains on and off every day, braxton hicks, etc etc etc - I can't believe this could go on for another 6 weeks!

Oh and last night I wolfed down some smoked salmon at a dinner party before remembering I'm not supposed to eat it AND then ate kedgeree with a soft poached egg because I've been relaxed about eggs - DH works for the Food Standards Agency and says all British eggs are ok'd in terms of salmonella - before remembering that this couple keep their own chickens and therefore the egg I'd just eaten, all soft and gooey, would NOT meet shop/government safety requirements. So am an idiot and totally crapping myself that I'll have done some harm - TWICE in an hour!

Oh it's a bad day!!

MrsP81 · 31/08/2011 13:23

spilt, she is adorable!

pippa, try not to worry too much about what you have eaten. I have also had a couple of panic moments where I have eaten something I shouldn't but have consoled myself with the thought that the chance is very small. You're definitely entitled to have bad days in 3rd trimester I reckon, it's hard work!

Hope everyone else is ok, especially getdown (seen on FB that you're not feeling so good).

I have 22 more days left at work after today and I cannot wait!!! Grin

GetDownYouWillFall · 31/08/2011 19:17

Mrsa I agree with you totally re. approach to b/feeding - really really want to make it work this time, but on the other hand, FF is not the work of the devil, and we have proof that babies do just fine on it. So either way, it's ok. No point making ourselves feel crap about it.

spilt your DD is so gorgeous!! I know you already know that, but it just needs saying! How precious. Thanks for putting some pics on. I still find it amazing how all our charting those months ago result in these perfect, tiny little people Smile

pippa don't worry too much re. the eating. I've had smoked salmon quite a bit (well, not a lot, I'm not that extravagant!!) - I just make sure it is well in date, and that it's not been exposed to the air for long. I'm sure it's fine. And as for the eggs, well home grown eggs are probably healthier and safer than some of the factory stuff anyway. I feel for you re. the weeing, and the aching. Me too.

Thanks MrsP yeah I've been feeling really awful since monday. Came over feeling really sick monday afternoon. I'd put it down to car sickness initially as I'd been out with friends and they gave me a lift home in the back seat - often get car sick in the back of car. But it has persisted, and now includes vomiting (in the middle of the night last night) and a really sore tender tummy Sad Also been feeling a bit shivery and feverish Sad Really hope it passes soon. Have not had much appetite, but feel I need to keep forcing myself to eat.

I am 38 weeks today. DD was born at 38+5, so am wondering if it could be soon for me... on the other hand I could still have nearly 4 weeks to go. Who knows!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 31/08/2011 21:08

spilt she is wonderful! Looks a little like DD when she was born - same size and little lovely cute face, and you have great taste - the blanket looks like the one we used. Oh I can't wait for November now!

pippa don't worry about eating smoked salmon - our food standards are very good and I confess I haven't given up smoked salmon or sushi. On Saturday DP and I went for Japanese and I have a sashimi platter (raw salmon). I also agree that your friends' eggs are probably better quality than supermarket. There used to be a concern about salmonella cos of the appalling conditions of battery hens (I think) due to bacterial infection and cross contamination but tbh, we always get free range eggs and i haven't given up runny eggs.

In fact, thinking about it, I have only given up blue cheese, liver and pates! Oops.

GetDownYouWillFall · 01/09/2011 16:05

This thread is feeling a bit lonely now.... Sad

jaggythistle · 01/09/2011 20:04

your name still makes me :) by the way!

GetDownYouWillFall · 01/09/2011 20:47

Ahh hello Jaggy Smile How are you doing? How many weeks are you now?

jaggythistle · 01/09/2011 20:51

I am a whole 5+2 (or 5+6 by LMP but I know I didn't ov till CD19)

Had first MW appointment yesterday, just a quick one where she took basic details to book scan etc. Nice to get things started though. :)

How's you?

MrsP81 · 02/09/2011 13:27

Hello!

Yes, its getting a bit echoey in here now that people's bumps are turning to babies.

Had my first antenatal class on Wednesday so its starting to feel real now! And only four weeks left of work, thank goodness.

Any signs yet getdown?

GetDownYouWillFall · 02/09/2011 17:48

No signs yet I'm afraid MrsP....

I thought perhaps the sickness and general grotty feeling earlier in the week may have been the start of something, but it appears not as I feel fine now!

How did you find your first antenatal class? Did you meet anyone you think you will become good friends with? I still see 2 or 3 ladies from my group, but some of them have since moved away. It is really good to have friends with a child the same age as yours.

Bet you are counting down the days till the end of work!
