A nice cosy place to accommodate our growing bumps and little wrigglers.

Just a quick one, got these bra extenders and I think they are fab! Just thought I would share Grin

LadyGoneGaga · 27/07/2011 12:33

I thought had better post my birth story while it is still relatively fresh in my memory. You might need some sustenance to get through it!

As most of you know I wasn't going to be allowed to go over my due date as had Gestational Diabetes and they were a bit concerned about babies size. Had a sweep on the Friday where she told me was 2cm and soft. No contractions though although lost my plug the day before. So we went in to labour ward at 8am on Sunday (my due date) for induction. They put the pessary in at 9am. They thought would only need one as was quite favourable although cervix still needed to come forwards. Had a chilled morning, went for a walk, read papers. About lunchtime started to get some niggly pains - just short prostin contractions. Put TENS on. Did more walking to get things going. Rechecked at 3:30pm no real changes so she did another sweep. Rechecked at 6:45pm and cervix had come forwards now although still 2cm and contractions longer and more regular so they took me to labour suite to break waters. MrG had gone out for chips at this point.

Settled into room which was quite homely and non-medical really. Could dim the lights etc. MrG got back from his chips and contractions kicked off strongly by about 7:15pm. Got acquainted with the gas and air. Was feeling quite a bit of backache so on all fours. They were quite intense at this point so started getting panicky and shouting about epidurals. The midwife (lovely old school Irish woman) said I couldn't as they were all in theatre and think was the last I said about it! After that I got more controlled with breathing etc and using gas and air effectively.

Really odd sensations, felt like needed to push but just went with it (must have just been baby moving down) as kept pooing myself (lovely!). Re-examined at about 9pmish and was now 10cm just with anterior lip! Kept going for a while longer, was getting anxious about whether I could start to push or not (think because I had such a difficult time with DS last time I didn't want to tire myself out if a lip or a bad position). anyway for next hour or so contractions seemed to slow down. Midwives got a bit concerned and mentioned starting the drip. I started crying, saying no and they said they would leave me a bit longer. At this point I sank down to my knees leaning over the bed and started to push her out. I can remember feeling her head and basically singing through each contraction as I breathed her out. This seemed to take a long time (but was only actually 20 mins) and was because her elbow was up by her head. But slowly, slowly she edged out and eventually I felt her head pop out. I could feel her wriggling and pushing with her feet inside. Then a couple more pushes and her whole body slithered out of me which felt amazing! She was behind me so I couldn't see her to begin with and then they pulled her up and I could see she had loads of hair and was just sobbing with relief. She latched on within 10 mins of being born and stayed feeding for 2 hours! She was born at 10:58pm so labour recorded as 3h45m - bit different from the 32 hours I had with miniG!

I had a little second degree tear but they said with the size of her (9lb8oz with 37cm head!) and the fact she had her elbow by her face this was fairly inevitable but it was only an external one and not too bad. She stitched it but i think local anaesthetic needle going into the fanjo was probably the worst bit of the whole labor! then I went and got in the bath while MrG had some skin time and Iris and me both went to bed after that!

I was impressed that throughout the midwives were great and pretty much ignored the whole diabetes thing. I had intermittent monitoring as per a normal delivery, didn't check blood sugars, no drip etc. Was fantastic! All in all I had a great labour, it was only as medicalised as needed to be and they just let me get on with it all myself. I used my birthing ball, yoga mat, used cat positions and kneeling positions and was a really amazing experience. Particularly given what I was expecting after missing out on the HB. They did no coached pushing, was all up to me and my instincts. Iris's blood sugars have been perfect too.

Hopefully it shows that even if things go massively tits up and deviate hugely from your ideal birth you can still have an amazing experience.

She's such a chilled baby (so far). Sleeps in her basket (MiniG would not be put down for a minute) and has been feeding great. In fact it was MiniG who disturbed our sleep last night, Iris only woke up once. Midwife checked her today and she has a wee bit of jaundice, lost 8% birthweight which is par for the course given the fact she is such a big girl.

We're all so, so happy. MiniG is such a proud big brother and MrG is loving being a Daddy (is his first). I just have to work on the additional mountains of flesh now that still seem to be adhered to me! 1 stone down, 3 and a half to go!

Will try to catch up with everyone's posts now.

Iwish · 27/07/2011 13:30

Lol split!! I know exactly what you mean about everything you mentioned! Especially the lying down and feeling guilty depending on the position!! I try and lie on my left side but have to move to the right when my hip/pelvis hurts then feel bad! Will have to get some info on the fanjo stretching then. Will start at about 34 weeks ish - eek!

getdown I love you!! I was just about to go and buy done new bras!! Now I don't need to. Mine are getting tight round the back but fine on the boobs. I forgot those extenders even existed!

lady the birth sounds fab! And I'm so glad that she Is a good baby, hopefully you will get a little rest.

Some cheeky f*%#er just said to me 'are you sure it's not twins?' !!!!! Cheeky cow!

Thank you for your birth story LadyG. I'm really pleased for you that even though you didn't get your home birth you still had a good one. Interesting to read that she is such a chilled baby, sort of ties in with a chilled (if that's possible!) birth.

I've been having a couple of down days where I have been worrying about everything, what birth will be like etc etc so that has cheered me up significantly!

Had very little sleep last night after DH had a night terror episode and screamed the house down and launched himself round the bedroom resulting in some cuts and bruises. I couldn't sleep after that. Frightened the bloody life out of me and now worried about it happening again as my instint is to try and calm him down but he was lashing out and don't want bump to get harmed. I've known him to have bad dreams before but this was something else. Good training for having kids I guess!

Poor nix, that sounds rough. You're so nearly there though, hang on in there.

Hello to everyone else. X

GetDownYouWillFall · 27/07/2011 15:52

Great to hear your birth story LadyG! Well done again, what a fab experience. Also I salute you for finding the time to type it all out with a newborn (and a small child). Am very impressed with you saying "no" to the drip - wish I had done so first time round with DD, and I plan to refuse the drip this time should my contractions slow. Makes it so much more painful, led to me having an epidural, continuous monitoring, pushing lying flat on back etc. etc. Not going that route again if I can help it!

Grin at iwish !! I am so chuffed with my bra extenders! Have been able to wear the non-underwired bra I bought that was too tight round the back, and am feeling very pleased about it! They came in the post really quickly too.

Hi Mrsp saw your FB status - hope you are ok! I think it's normal to have days where we feel a bit down and worried about stuff. There is a lot to think about having a baby! Sounds horrible re. your DH's night terror. I had a friend I used to work with who got those and it was awful as she would wander out of her flat in her sleep and do all sorts of strange things. Apparently you shouldn't try to wake them up when they are in the middle of it though. Has he ever been to the doctor about it?

spilttheteaagain · 27/07/2011 16:00

How cruel Lady to taunt us with your wine! Wink

Thank you so much for such a detailed birth story, it sounds like you did really well and the hospital care sounds ideal. Can't wait to experience the body slithering out bit, everyone says that is such an amazing feeling. I feel all broody and excited now!

The cheeky bugger iwish. I would have been tempted to give them a skeptical raised eyebrow and say "Yes I'm sure it's not twins, because it is the 21 century and women have scans." And then give a deathstare.

My Smartipants nappy has arrived today and it's my favourite so far (colourwise at any rate Grin)

Sorry you've had a bad few days MrsP. I find that sort of worrying is when I have to resort to my natal hypnotherapy CD and actually it does a grand job of soothing and calming me. Your poor DH and you, that sounds horrible. Does he remember anything about it?

TerrysNo2 · 27/07/2011 17:10

Lady you are mean to tempt us to wine Wink. What a fab birth story - I recently posted mine with DS on my blog if you are interested. Here

Spilt Do you want more nappies?? I am addicted to them. I like small ones though as I don't like the fact that some of them make clothes look silly as they are so big. My absolute favourites are Itti Bitti D'Lish Snap in Ones and I also really like Bambootys. This is a really good website (run by an MN-er) where you can buy both of them.

Iwish point that lovely person in this direction

MrsP that sounds horrid with night terrors, you meant your DH, only I didn't know it happened in adults? Is this your first baby? Honestly, don't worry about the labour - yes it will hurt like hell but it will be over in no time and afterwards you will have a lovely baby. And a lot of us are doing it for a 2nd/3rd time so it can't be that bad Grin

Iwish · 27/07/2011 18:37

mrsp your poor DH! That sounds horrible. Horrible for you too waking up to him being upset etc. And sorry you have had a crappy few days. Hopefully you will have lovely days to follow. I have some days when I feel the same.

getdown im actually excited about them coming now haha!! Feel free to pass on any more fab ideas :)

split I wanted to give her more than the death stare!! My midwife said I'm measuring spot on so she can stuff off! Bet you are all excited now nappies have arrived!

Lol terrys I will have to send her that link. In fact maybe I should tape one to my bump and one to my back for all to see!
I will have a nosey at your blog in a moment I think :).
Is your DS getting excited about having a brother or sister?

OP posts:
spilttheteaagain · 27/07/2011 18:39

Oh don't tempt me terrys! So far I've mainly bought one size nappies, apart from some small Thirsties. I've got a load of used ones on order from here - looks like they have used Ittis there for £6 each if you are after a top up.

This is where I've mainly been shopping so far - fantastically quick delivery which has been free on the nappies I've had. They've had 10% off all nappies and accessories for a few days, and their loyalty points essentially gives you 5% of your previous order off of your next order, so I've done very well from them.

Loved your Pregnancy Etiquette page, all so true!

MrsP81 · 27/07/2011 18:54

I'm ok thank you getdown, or at least I know I will be soon. I have been having one of those days where I cry at literally nothing, hence why I think I might be crazy!

I think I may have to get me one of those CDs spilt, it sounds like it could do the trick. I am also loving your nappy research and purchases! I need to formulate a nappy plan so its really useful to get all your opinions.

Yes this is baby no.1 terrys! So fear of the unknown is what I have. Although on a 'normal' day I don't worry about it so it?s just the hormone days. Thanks for the reassurance though. Smile

Night terrors are not as common in adults but are usually triggered by some stress (I have been reading up on it!). Hopefully it won?t become a regular thing but if it does then we will be off to see the doctors. I didn?t know about not waking them up getdown, but I can now see why you shouldn?t, it made him worse as I think he thought I was a snake!!!!! He doesn?t remember it spilt, apart from the aftermath as we were out of bed, he was bleeding, and a glass of water was on the floor. Anyway, I feel much better for having written all of this down. Sorry to have rambled on about it.

iwish, I really don?t understand why people think its ok to say things like that! Also I don?t get why people think they can touch your bump. To be honest its only my brother that has done it but we do not have a touchy feely huggy relationship so why he thinks its suddenly ok to poke me on the belly I have no idea. Grrrrrr.

Right, I?m going to stop ranting now and hope for a more positive day tomorrow!

nickstermum · 27/07/2011 19:45

Pippa re the carpal tunnel try and wear the splints at night. Mine is wretched at night but ok in the day so i just use them t night. (unless of course you already are!!) Pins and needles down from the elbow all night are just no fun at all.....

Wow what a birth story!!! FAB you were able to go with the flow lovely... sounds fabulous. Hope i get something similar :)

Went for a long walk today... to try and bring baby down. Bloody ankles though.... Confused maybe just a short one tomorrow lol

Iwish · 27/07/2011 20:28

mrsp they think they have a licence to say anything to a pregnant woman! The comments like 'oooh hes going yo be a big baby' and wow you are huge' really wind me up! The amount of people AT WORK who have touched my bump in unbelieveable! Even my mum hasn't touched my bump yet!
And feel free to rant, I have had a few rants recently lol.

nix I hope your walking does help labour along. You just need a nice massage for your feet and ankles now :)

OP posts:
IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 27/07/2011 21:43

Hi ladies, just popping in to say Hi (no news from me unfortunately, I've taken myself temporarily of the Charters TTC thread).

I've been spying on you all for a while and I'm so pleased that you BFPs are turning in to BFbumps and now real life babies! Grin

Conratulations Lady your birth story brought a tear to my eye :)

Good luck to you all, and I hope the day that you get to hold your little bundles comes very quickly. x

nickstermum · 28/07/2011 02:10

Waves to if xxx

Very sad that you haven't yet had the joy of another conception lovely, but I am certain for you that it will happen very soon! Thank you for your lovely message though xxxx

Mmm massage would be fab right now.... ;)

LadyGoneGaga · 28/07/2011 08:45

Lovely to hear from you, Ifat. I hope you get some good news soon.

Nix Do you have a birth ball? I was doing some hula hopping motions on mine to get her to move down. You have to do them quite fast though. For about 20 mins. Hope it helps. Are you aiming for a weekend birth?

Iwish · 28/07/2011 19:06

Hi if fingers crossed you get your bfp soon. Nice to hear from you, hope you are ok.

Hi all you other lovely ladies!!

Got a little question for you...For the past couple of days I've had period type pain v low down, the kind that just feels 'warm'. I can barely feel it because its that light but have just noticed it a couple of times. Is it normal?

OP posts:
GetDownYouWillFall · 28/07/2011 19:58

Hi there Ifatfirst it's good to see you again. Sorry to hear you are still waiting for your BFP. Don't give up! Many on here know the heartbreak you are going through [hugs]

Iwish could it be braxton hicks contractions? Does your bump go hard? I do get mild period-y type feelings from time to time, I don't think it's anything to worry about. Probably just the uterus gearing up for some serious tensing!

I felt so weary today in this heat ... feel really bad that DD watched a lot of Cbeebies today Blush

Iwish · 28/07/2011 20:54

No it doesn't getdown just the same as normal. Even feel him wriggling at the same time sometimes. I'm guessing it's normal but thought I would ask you lovely lot :). Will mention it to the midwife next week.
Don't feel bad! You need the rest and I bet your DD loves Cbeebies. You may aswell get the rest now Grin
How many weeks are you now?

OP posts:
GetDownYouWillFall · 28/07/2011 21:20

I'm 33 weeks now. DD arrived at 38 weeks so could be as little as 5 weeks away - Eeek! Don't feel very organised!

We thank you in advance for your support and kind attention to our choices.

spilttheteaagain · 29/07/2011 09:46

Hi If lovely to hear from you. So sorry you haven't had your BFP yet, I really hope you get it soon.

How's your aches iwish? I wonder if it's the weight of the boy starting to really make itself felt? Or stretching. Ask your MW, I'm sure it's ok, but always nice to be told that.

That's a very comprehensive birth plan GetDown, all very politely phrased, unlike mine which was like a list of barked orders in order to be brief Grin

I must surely be about to pop by now.... nesting has reached the final and mad stage of washing walls down with sugar soap and spending 30 mins walking round smiling at them afterwards. All whilst the bathroom sink grows fur because I'm not interested in bathroom nesting Hmm

Iwish · 29/07/2011 18:12

Wow getdown that is a fab birth plan, so detailed too. My birthplan is: 'go to hospital. Take what comes' lol. The only thing I've kind of decided is that I would like to be up on my knees holding DP or the bed while pushing rather than lay down. Oh and I don't fancy an epidural or pethadine.

split aches aren't here today! Just aching everywhere else be ause I've been shopping with my mum and nan so they have walked me everywhere! Will def mention it to MW just so she can reassure like you say.
Can't believe you have been washing Walls!! You mad woman Grin
Get your DH to do the bathroom - I do lol!!

Well I have spent a fortune today!! Little man has been spoilt again hehe. I did get an angelcare nappy disposal system. It was supposed to be £20 but it's on sale at babies r us for £6.99!!

GetDownYouWillFall · 31/07/2011 20:58

Hi all, how is everyone? Hope you've all had a nice weekend. It was a gorgeous day here. Had a lovely roast chicken for lunch and then a really nice relaxed walk with DH, DD and the dog this afternoon in the sunshine Smile

I've really got the spending bug too iwish. My weakness is online shopping - it's just soooo easy and I keep thinking of things I really really "neeeeed" Hmm

I've gone for a Moby wrap (thanks for the tip MrsA!!) and it arrived in the post yesterday. Have been practising trying it on, and putting DD's dolly in it Blush DH thinks I am a bit bonkers!

Had my fourth session of hypnobirthing on friday night. Only 1 more session to go! I'm really enjoying it. It's totally changed my approach to the birth. I am actually really looking forward to labour Shock!!! Just hope it all goes smoothly this time.

I really hope the baby is head down now, but just find it so hard to tell! There is a hard round lump which often appears high up - I am assuming this is the bottom, but I suppose it could be the head Confused Next MW appt is not for another week yet. They are so few and far between with a second pregnancy.

nickstermum · 01/08/2011 09:24

Morning.. feeling pretty ropey...:(
Acid indigestion all night despite gaviscon, feeling sicky, too hot.. was in the paddling pool at 4.30am this morning... Grin getting some fresh air! I think bp is behaving now, but going to go for a check up later on anyway. Been resting over the weekend as had high-ish bp/protein in wee on wed with significant all over swelling but just being monitored. Heat certainly not helping! Very grumpy and short tempered this morning :(

YEY for the hypnobirthing, the slings and the online shopping Grin fab!!!
Sorry for me me me post, too tired to scroll back and i have a cranky 3yo today with a poorly foot (even crankier!) after he scratched gashed it in the garden yest, and dont we know it!!! Wouldnt mind, but he wont have any meds for it either... so we all suffer poor sausage

spilttheteaagain · 01/08/2011 12:51

Morning all
Sorry you're feeling so crappy nix. This late stage isn't fun is it. I was thinking yesterday afternoon how nice a cold paddling pool sounded. Chuckling at the image of you out there in the middle of the night though! Hope your check up goes well.

I've also got the spending bug GetDown. Yesterday we went and bought the carrycot attachment for the buggy. Buggy should be fine from birth but I was having a wobble about my tiny newborn not being completely flat and protected round the edges. DH humoured me Smile

Just got a nursing bra this morning so I think I am about there for shopping. Until tomorrow Blush

Baby has turned round and been back to back for about the last week now which I am trying to rectify. No success yet though.

Fully cooked now, hit 37 weeks at the weekend!

LadyGoneGaga · 01/08/2011 13:36

Poor you, Nic. That sounds rubbish. Are they keeping a close eye on you? Paddling pool sounds great though.

Congratulations on reaching full term, Spilt. It's all over bar the waiting now. And gives you a few weeks to get baby to turn. Have you tried all the stuff on the Spinning Babies site?

I can second Moby wraps, Getdown. They were a lifesaver with DS although this one is so chilled I may not need it so much. Really pleased to hear you are feeling so positive about labour now. Is a massive turnaround for you I know. You are giving yourself the best possible chance of having a good experience. And it is really likely to be very different this time round anyway.

Iris is doing great. Took her for her guthrie test on Saturday and weighed her and she has put back on half the weight she lost after birth. Registered her today as well so she is now a proper person! She sleeps really well and has nailed her latch now so my nipples are almost healed. Stitches still very sore though, skin layer has come undone so will have to see how they are doing at next appt.
