30-week scan? Is everyone meant to get one?

I've been really low the last couple of days, just depressed and overwhelmed with everything, anyone else the same? It doesn't help that work have told me I can't have the time off for my antenatal physio session next week Sad

It's the only real antenatal group session I've been given, is it the NHS equivalent of the NCT classes or should I have been offered antenatal classes? Am so confused!

kittycatcat · 25/01/2011 09:38

Are they allowed to say no Cycle? I thought it was the law if you get me? Go to HR!

JustKeepSwimming · 25/01/2011 09:40

Cycle - 30 week scan not routine no. Just the 12 & 20 week ones.
I'm having an extra scan later on by my request at DS2 was breech and I want to confirm the position of this baby before going into a planned home birth. (the MWs did not detect he was breech so a MW trying to reassure me this time about position won't work, lol).

Physio is not, AFAIK, the normal NCT classes, check with your MW if you can, you may have been forgotten about, but also they do start quite late from memory.

And work, really I'm fairly sure they have to let you attend AN appts, whatever they are for, others i'm sure will know more.

But yes, have been feeling more emotional anyway recently, medium feedback on eBay bugging me for days for eg. Little comments preying on my mind, etc.

JustKeepSwimming · 25/01/2011 09:42

this link says your employers must let you attend & pay you too.

JoEW · 25/01/2011 10:12

Hi all,

Trying to catch up as work crazy busy at the moment. Cycle I hope you're ok. I know what it's like working for a small company where you feel obliged to do everything you can for them. My boss is based in SA and they have such different employment laws over there that I have to push quite hard to get the things were entitled to here. They think it's reasonable to take off 4 months maternity leave!

But, your company is not being reasonable, or acting within the law, by telling you that you can't attend your physio. You're entitled to go to pregnacy yoga in working hours if you want to! I think you should try to sit down with them, talk it though and make it clear to them that while you are happy to do all you can to ensure they are not let down that the law is designed to protect you from this kind of thing and they do have to accept that you are pregnant and have certain entitlements.

It's not an easy conversation to have but this isn't the first time that you've mentioned being stressed about your impact on the office by doing the basics of attending a midwife appointment. They are employers, they are presumably not idiots so must know that now and again people are going to get pregnant. What they are asking isn't fair on you at all.

Is there anyone you can go out for a coffee with and chat about it, informally?

And I think there should be other hospital classes that you can attend. I think it varies depending on the hospital but defo give them a call. I've been lazy and booked NCT, so that I can just rock up there and presumably be given all the info, but I know that Kingston Hospital runs some free classes too.

I don't get a 30 week scan, 20 week is the last one, unless they are worried about anything. I think if the midwife is concerned about the size of your bump they will do a scan to check the size properly.

Cyclebump · 25/01/2011 11:36

You know what, you're all right, I shouldn't have to put up with this rubbish. Am heartily sick of it.

Spoke to antenatal, they've booked me in for a couple antenatal class on a Saturday but they're very cross about the group physio and told me to tell my boss where to go. They said it was illegal not to let me go. Ok, am gearing myself up for the showdown! I'll have to move it to the March one (they're once a month and they're meant to be for about 34 weeks, I'll be 36), which is still on a day they don't want me to go but tough.

kittycatcat · 25/01/2011 11:59

You go girl!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/01/2011 12:37

What a pita they're being cycle, am glad you're making a stand.

Today's Amazon special is 33% off the BT 150 Digital Baby Monitor, making it £46.99.

Cyclebump · 25/01/2011 15:24

Ooooh, baby monitors, I'm in two minds. We're in such a tiny flat after all...

Petalouda · 25/01/2011 18:19

Good luck with the showdown cycle! Perhaps we should all meet up at your work to support you. They'll never argue with a whole herd of pregnant birds!

BeetleBaby · 25/01/2011 18:42

I agree with petal we'll all pitch up and sort 'em out for you cycle Wink

In fact I'm in a very mardy arsed mood and could do with having a good grumble! All day things have been irritating me. I blame the packed bus this morning where no one would give up their seat, first for the woman with toddler and wriggly baby who had had to collapse her buggy (so I gave her mine) and then no one moved for me or any of the other three obviously pregnant women were standing. Yes, I'm grrr-ing at you rowers taking up have the bus!

I work with a lovely lady, and on the whole I manage to quash my sarcastic comments when I'm irritated, but if she squeals about how big I look one more time I will not be held responsible for what I say! She sees me every day and I'm 30wks pregnant it surely isn't that shocking that I'm getting bigger Angry

and breath sorry about the rant April ladies, just needed to get that out!

Cyclebump · 25/01/2011 19:36

So glad I'm not the only one with pregnancy rage! Sometimes NOTHING is right with the world. DP has taken to listening politely before ignoring me until I calm down.

I do like the idea of my own pg army descending on work but hopefully it won't be needed Smile

Liv77 · 25/01/2011 20:00

Hey Beetle rants are much better out than in Grin.

I also pulled pregnancy rank at work today over a kick-along stool, which I had to practically wrestle off our resident hyperchondriac. I spoke to a couple of colleagues after to see if they thought I had been unreasonable and they said no (one admitted she was smiling inside when I just walked off with it as she wouldn't have had the nerve). Smile

RE: Baby monitors
We have a two way baby monitor and to be honest it was a waste of money. We only ever use it as a two way when we can't be bothered to go upstairs and want something bought down by the other half.Blush. But then I always thought DS would find it a bit freaky if my crackly disembodied voice started talking at him via his bedside table.
We do still use it to listen out for DS when we are in the lounge in the evenings as you can't always hear him over the TV and if he wakes a bit upset you can intervene before the major tears start.
Our's is a Fisher Price monitor I forget which one, there is always loads of interference on it but it still picks up Ok when he wakes.

My 30 week scan was because I was medicated for high BP in the later stages of my last pregnancy, so they want to keep an eye out this time. So far so good, I'll also have another scan at 35 weeks.

SaltedPretzels · 25/01/2011 20:30

Hello April Family Thank you for your thoughts it's been a hard few days the funeral is this Friday DH has cancelled all events for us to be there. It's still not sunk in yet she was only 34, just left her partner as he wasn't one to settle down and she was thinking about the tick tock biological clock! Sometimes life throws crap at you eh! Sad

I've been wearing this 3m pregnancy support belt for the past two days and wow what a difference Smile It takes a bit of getting used to especially making sure it's not too tight that when you sit down you make an hourglass shape of baby Shock or make yourself burst for a wee Hmm I really notice the difference when I take it off on an evening but for the freedom from pain during the day it's top marks from me. I start physio again on Tuesday so looking forward to that.

I had a voice mail from my MW today on my return from dropping a group off this morning asking me to call her regarding my blood tests Confused I called and she asked me to go up to the hospital for more bloods and a chat Shock 2 hours later I was being drained again, first tied left arm but t wasn't giving drop not even on the 2nd attempt it wouldn't bleed when she too the needle out. The finally the right arm gave in. I've been taking iron supplements for the past months as with both DD I was anaemic so I knew the signs. This is slightly different as I may be deficient in a certain iron she's testing for three I can only remember B12. If it's B12 (this is why I remember this one) it's injections from here to delivery Sad.

Cycle Use the force hormones. Don't forget to let mumsnet slip if it can scare PM's who knows lol
I too have been feeling crap, tired etc although I guess the iron is the problem. As for the 30 week scan I was reading about that last night no not everyone has them they are for checking specific things but I can't remember what, sorry pregnancy brain strikes again Confused I thought it was to do with weight and fluid but I maybe wrong. I have one at 34 weeks to check the placenta to see if it's moved up, fingers crossed it has.

Baby monitors - Not sure, I can hear my neighbours if they bang around so I don't see why I can't hear a baby especially my own. I am looking at the sensor pads as DH's family have a history of infant and stillbirths so I'm getting slightly paranoid about that!

I don't know what the biscuit emotion is for but it reminds me of my belly button Biscuit Grin

kittycatcat · 26/01/2011 08:34

Lol at belly button Salted. Mine is starting to emerge i think Sad. We'll all be thinking of you on Friday!

Rant away beetle i seem to be a walking swear machine at the moment. Public transport rant. packed tube this morning, someone got up to get off and the woman who was younger than me but old enough to know better sat down. I hope my bump and baby on board badge gives her conscience a bad day. People are ignorant eh!

caramellokoalalover · 26/01/2011 09:26

Angry hormonal pregnant lady here too eating Biscuits. I am having to do plenty of deep breathing at the moment as seems little things just keep annoying me. Had my car broken into on the weekend Angry and that was after I was on the verge of tears all day Saturday over nothing in particular. I think need some sunshine. Can you get a holiday to the sun on the NHS? I'm sure it would improve my health Wink.

On another topic, the BT digital monitors are great, no crackling/buzzing/humming at all which is great when they're on next to your bed all night. I use the two way function but only now DS is older to tell him I'm on my way to get him when he wakes up before he starts shouting. Also the BT150 has a room thermometer built in which was great in the early days when I was worried about SIDS and overheating.

salted the only thing I've heard about the sensor pads is that they are so sensitive they go off all the time and terrify you constantly so you end up turning them off anyway. Maybe they are better now than they were 2 years ago though.

JustKeepSwimming · 26/01/2011 12:06

I did school runs, came home and had a bath, then went back to bed :) Had a lovely nap!
DS2 has been waking me v early recently so that's my excuse Hmm

Also, whilst watching home birth videos on YouTube last night i started leaking, yey! in a weird way as i was half worrying that the system wasn't working.

Watching the videos really got me in the 'mood' for labour, weird.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 26/01/2011 13:46

I'll be thinking of you on Friday SP xx

Like Caramel, we've got the BT digital monitor and have found it to be great. The music on it is shite (imo), but I find the thermometer on it really useful and no buzzing/interferance on it either (sp?)

Sounds like a great morning to me JKS Smile I think I may have to call you Dory though, as that's what I think of everytime I see your name Grin

I haven't leaked, but I recently walked into a room where two friends were bf'ing their newborns and my boobs started to get that tingley/let down feeling and I felt very jealous of them sitting there feeding and being all zen like and content

Cyclebump · 26/01/2011 14:01

Hope Friday offers some closure SP. xxx

I have used the force and have rebooked in for my group physio on 2 March.

On TV viewing, I find One Born Every Minute sets off my Braxton Hicks. Almost feels like I'm having a mini-labour with them!

thefurryone · 26/01/2011 14:07

It's a relief to hear that I'm not the only one in a totally grumpy arse mood at the moment. My back is sore and my sciatica is playing up so I never seem to be comfortable and I just can't be arsed to do any of the 1001 urgent things I need to do before I finish for maternity leave and before the baby is born all I want to do is lie in bed and eat chocolate.

Also is it just me but I feel like I've been pregnant FOREVER! If there is a next time I want to be one of those people who only realises at about 20 weeks because this is getting ridiculous and there is still another 3 months to go!

SP hope the funeral goes well on Friday, these things are never easy especially for those that are gone at such a young age.

kittycatcat · 26/01/2011 14:08

i missed OBEM this week. Must catch up with it online.

thefurryone · 26/01/2011 14:09

cyclebump I find myself breathing along with them and getting some very worried looks from my DH! Haven't watched this week yet was slightly put off by the 'long difficult labour' description on the sky planner. Was it any good?

SaltedPretzels · 26/01/2011 14:20

OK so I know I shouldn't complain about this HOWEVER..............Grin

I'm on Maternity leave and I'm really bloody bored stupid, everyone is at work lol

I even resorted to popping in to see some friends on their lunch hour and breaks cos I'm so bored today lol

I propose an April family holiday maybe go see Frakk Wink

Liv just read your cotbed situation lol

thefurryone · 26/01/2011 17:31

salted would you like me to send you some of my PhD reading to keep you occupied Wink

Work going so badly this afternoon I decided I should go shopping and have finally managed to buy some baby purchases, got some long sleeve sleepsuits, bibs, baby wipes and maternity pads. Slightly random selection but these felt like things I could safely get without doing 900 hours worth of internet research, although I'm now worried that I have the wrong size sleepsuits, that newborn babies don't need bibs, that I should be making reusable baby wipes and that boots maternity pads are probably the worst on the market Confused

Is anyone else feeling totally overwhelmed by the whole buying for baby experience? I just honestly feel like I can't trust my own judgement on anything baby related.

ecuse · 26/01/2011 17:38

Braxton Hicks - does everyone except me have them? I'm not aware I've had any yet (28+2). Everyone else's uterus is practising and mine is just arsing around, apparently.
