Are your twins identical, jack? I forget whether you already said.

NeedToSleepZZZ · 02/12/2010 20:54

jackfrost sounds glamourous compared to my old job! My nan had my identical twin uncles when she was in her 40s and this was over 50 years ago, they turned out fine (but my poor nan was given the run around by them playing tricks on her!).

knitta I have decided on the policy of actively ignoring any horror stories re birth, I am well aware of the risks of HB, I am not stupid and have done my research and it's the right decision for me, and I know you're the same. I hadn't realised just how judgmental women are with each other when it comes to parenting until I became pregnant and it makes me so cross! Why can't we support each other? Whether a woman decides to have an elcs/hospital/ HB/ pain relief/ natural birth, it's got nothing to do with anyone else and we never know what we'd do in someone else's shoes. One of the reasons I love this thread is because everyone is so supportive and that's the way it should be. If everyone was like this then women wouldn't be as frightened of birth as they tend to be. Of course things don't always go to plan and not everyone is lucky enough to have the birth they planned but this should make us even more supportive. Okay, I'll stop ranting now, must be feeling more hormonal than I realised! Am very Angry on your behalf.

Now going for a hot ribena to calm down...

jackfrost · 02/12/2010 21:03

Hi prof, yes they are identical, or so i'm told anyway! As much as I hate people making constant comparisons between twins, I will find it quite interesting to compare them a little to my sister and I - things like I'm right handed, she is left handed, I HATE marmite, she loves it! Smile

PDR · 02/12/2010 21:26

NeedToSleep I totally agree with you that women can be SO judgemental when it comes to pregnancy / childbirth / parenting full stop! Everyone is different and has to make decisions that are right for them and their family! Men are actually much more compassionate. I have noticed this with my female colleagues when I was struggling at work / now I am off sick. I think a lot of women think "well, I did it so you can too!" without knowing anything about your situation!

Hormones are raging tonight! Just had a mini-roll to "treat" myself Grin I bought them for DS as he is not feeling well (had a temp this avo) but he threw one in the bin with the wrapper still on Hmm and demanded raspberries & blueberries instead Confused He's eaten so much fruit / smoothies today I'd actually rather he ate the cake!

jack I don't think I've ever met identical twins but there are non-identical twins at DS's nursery and they are soooooooooo different - one is HUGE and the other one is tiny! You'd never know they were twins actually! And they like to do completely different activities so I am told.

Re: Home Birth - you'll find HB horrors, hospital horrors, any kind of horrors you like if you go looking so take it all with a pinch of salt and do whatever YOU feel is best for you and your baby. Is it an urban myth that they keep an ambulance outside your house when you're in the final stages of labour at home? I must admit I don't actually know anyone who has had a HB, but I can tell you some hospital horrors!

For those planning a home birth are you going to hire one of those inflatible pool wotzits? I would love that but I am too high-risk and I doubt I would cope without hardcore pain-relief as I'm a wimp!!!!!!!!!!!

smallblackflowers · 02/12/2010 21:27

knitta really Angry that your aunt has managed to upset you. It sounds to me that she has very strong feelings against HB and really has not considered that you are anything but uninformed about it.As the others have very wisely said - it is your birth and up to you to consider the options that are available and go what is best for you.
If I lived closer to the hospital I would definitely consider a HB, but will be going for the midwife led unit instead (if it is open!). I've appointed a doula now too so will be reassured that she has the experience to go and get help if things don't look right.

People do love a bit of a gossip and a gory horror story is far more gossip-worthy than a boring 'and her labour was a quick 5 hours, mother and baby doing wonderfully well' type story.

smallblackflowers · 02/12/2010 21:29

ledkr meant to say that I'm really pleased that you are feeling a bit better. What a difference it makes when you can actually do something without pain / breathlessness Smile

I caved and bought some pate today. Am planning to eat a bit on toast now. Feeling very naughty, but only plan to have a tiny bit.

ledkr · 02/12/2010 21:37

sbf thanks,i feel like a different woman, altho a bit achy now but just need my bed bit of telly and my dolly mixtures.Enjoy your pate you wicked rebel.I went to mw app today with a starbucks latte in my hand, she didnt say anything.I later wandered thru town scoffing ahot sausage roll whilst getting crumbs all over my coat,God i love being pregnant somethimes Grin

PDR · 02/12/2010 21:40

mmmmmmmmmm sausage roll.......... [drools]

smallblackflowers · 02/12/2010 21:57

The pate was nice, but I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't spent the time whilst eating it googling 'why you shouldn't eat pate whilst pregnant'. Listeriosis and vitamin A poisoning in case anyone was wondering.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/12/2010 21:57

Yes, they definitely don't keep an ambulance outside your house when you're in the final stages of labour at home. There are better things to do with ambulances and anyway most transfers from home to hospital aren't actual emergencies.

smallblackflowers · 02/12/2010 21:58

And I had a prawn salad for lunch.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/12/2010 22:00

Have just eaten stilton. Most of it is an ingredient in dinner and will be cooked through, but there was some left over. With the emphasis on the was. Yum.

NeedToSleepZZZ · 02/12/2010 22:19

Ha ha! You're all being extremely naughty tonight Wink!

ledkr good to hear you're feeling bit better, dolly mixtures are a well known cure for pregnancy ailments.

although you don't have you're own on call ambulance with a hb you do get to keep your mw if you're transferred to hospital I think which is good. It's absolutely true what prof says about most tranfers not being emergencies, if anything is beginning to look out of the ordinary they whisk you off sharpish to err on the side of caution.

i finally got round to doing my birth plan and was meant to be having a gossip meet up with my OH, mum and closest friend to discuss who's comfortable doing what (OH squeamish, mum nervous etc) at the birth but then the snow happened so been postponed.

meant to be watching a film at the moment but can't get comfy and i'm annoying OH by fidgeting so think i'm going to go to bed and try to sleep.... flippin back is aching!

tadventjennyp · 02/12/2010 22:24

I get a latte once a twice a week at least from a drive-through coffee shack (one of the best American inventions ever!) but only in the mornings. I can't survive without it as either dd or ds or both are up in the night, every night. More than a little concerned that all 3 will take it in turns to keep me up at night! And I've eaten salami and prosciutto and good cheese! Got to eat something you fancy once in a while!

Oneof4 · 02/12/2010 22:24

Goats cheese and a glass of wine (though admittedly small) over here. Yum. Don't tell the MIL.

Having been convinced about a hospital birth, I'm now swinging back towards a home birth option. No idea what to do, TBH. Or what to call the child when it arrives. Or which car seat to get. Or.....but you get the picture. :)

knittakid · 02/12/2010 22:36

Thank you all for your support, really. Who knows, it's still early days and something might happen which means I have to go to hospital regardless, so am not stubborn about it. The set up for HB here makes me feel really confortable, and hospital is only about 10 min away. Will see.

All the naughtiness sounds great! I had mackerell with boiled carrots and brussel sprouts and new pots... good old exciting me Xmas Envy

tadventjennyp · 02/12/2010 22:37

We didn't find out the sex beforehand with the first two and found it easy to choose names. This time we know it's a boy and haven't a clue! 10 weeks to go and haven't got anything sorted.

santaslittleheroine · 03/12/2010 07:06

Yay for supportive threads!
knitta don't worry about your aunt at all - you sound like you have made your decision and you should be happy with that.
I told my greek teacher last night that I was hoping to have a water birth and he'd never heard of it! Que embarrassing conversation (with hand gestures) to explain that I wasn't talking about my waters breaking but actually having the baby in water. My greek really isn't up to this level, by the way! When he got it, finally, he was quite impressed and said he wished he'd known about that with his daughters.
My friend had her second baby at 4.30 this morning - at home - and the text said that the birth was 'amazing'. I can't wait to have a blow-by-blow conversation about how and why it was so 'amazing' and if i can get any tips. I'll let you lot know!
Oh, and about names - each baby they've had 2 names ready for each sex, and wait and see what they feel fits. They gave the baby my name as a second name [honoured] :)

janedoe25 · 03/12/2010 07:17

Congrats to your friend santas, What a beautiful thing to do you must feel so proud.

As for horror stories i try to ignore them all, my sister is trying to fill my head with horror! My motto is to go with an open mind and do what feels right for me and baby! Although i must admit i am bloody scared at times!

Happy friday everyone Grin

smallblackflowers · 03/12/2010 10:28

I think I may have tempted fate....sickness and diarrhoea this morning Sad although DH, who was away with work last night and didn't share any of my meals was also sick in the night.

Looking forward to hearing about the amazing HB story santaslittleheroine and Grin about your Greek explanation of a water-birth - very impressed you managed to get the concept across!

ledkr · 03/12/2010 11:07

me too.Breathlessness has returned with a vengeance!Could hardly get back from school and had to have a lie down after. She obviously returned to her previous annoying position. My gp has given me different iron which i only take once a day and wont make me bunged up so that was nice.
I am still struggling with names,i had decided on Ivy or Delilah but people have had such averse reactions to them im put off now.My son was flabbergasted and asked what he was meant to tell his mates? What do you think?

knittakid · 03/12/2010 14:29

santas thank you, and congrats on your friends baby!

sbf I hope you are better now!

ledkr hopefully she'll move again? that's not very nice of your son, what are his choices? I really like your choices, but then I like unusual names.

wigglesrock · 03/12/2010 15:56

How are you feeling sbf? I like your names Ledkr, think I slightly prefer Delilah, but Ivy is lovely too.

Went back to work today after last weekend and Mondays debacles, rows, tears and overall piss offedness, not too bad, air cleared, all friends again Hmm, wouldn't go that far but the atmosphere is certainly better. Am going back in at 6.30pm tonight, so hoping for a big snow flurry so we can go home early Grin We've been very lucky with the snow, not too much but everywhere is frozen solid!!

I applied for my Health in Pregnancy grant 4 weeks ago and haven't got it yet, poo (have already mentally spent it!!). I rang number today and the helpful answermachine told me that it was now taking up to 6 weeks to process some claims.

ledkr · 03/12/2010 16:17

i got mine quite quickly wiggles. Not long now to work is there?
Put your earplugs in tonight girls.Dh promised hed finish early today for tour of the new maternity hospital. Its at least half an hour away so wont be able to go now cos traffic will be terrible.I give up. Feel really sad.Its not him who is having his belly cut open after all so not important.

smallblackflowers · 03/12/2010 16:33

hello all - not too bad now thanks, although not up to my work xmas do tonight, and I've already paid for it - oh well

wiggles fingers crossed for a good night for you tonight

ledkr Sad about your not being able to make it to the hospital. I'm sure you will be able to rebook though. Hopefully your DH will have a good excuse.
