Just a new thread as I noticed we are near the limit (again)!

Hi all,

I've just got back from a really good physio session at my local hospital. Am to go back in a month.

On a sad note, I found out this morning that my friend's baby, born last Saturday, has had a positive diagnosis for Downs Syndrome. Baby had been on oxygen in the SCBU since birth, but is breathing on his own now, and she is trying to get breastfeeding established. I felt very shocked and upset when I found out this morning...anyway, just wanted to share.

ZeroMinusZero · 12/11/2010 13:23

sbf happy to hear about your session, sorry to hear about your friend's baby. I definitely think it is a huge, life changing thing to have a disabled baby (perhaps particularly if he or she is mentally disabled) and I know it would really knock me for six if it happened to me. I really hope it works out for them from this point.

I myself have finally had a bit of luck with the ongoing doctor saga. I went to see GP yet again this morning and finally got her to book me in for three physio sessions which I am happy about. I am also not working all of next week, which should help. On the downside I scraped our car against a pillar and was worried as DH can be a bit protective about his baby car but he says he doesn't care and that all pregnant women should be allowed to write off several cars without having to apologise.

Hope everyone else is having a nice Friday.

40Weeks · 12/11/2010 13:32

Wow Zero what's he been taking ? Wink

Sbf I am sorry to hear about your friends baby, how is she doing? What a shock. I guess we assume they will pick these things up at scans but they can't read the future. Hope she is ok.

My sis just called to say she is taking my nephew to hospital on advice of her optician. He scratched his eye a few weeks ago and despite the hospital saying it was nothing to worry about, he has developed a cataract and needs an op fast if he wants to keep his sight in that eye! Poor darling is only 10 and has been keeping quiet that he can hardly see from that eye.

ZeroMinusZero · 12/11/2010 14:03

40weeks it must be from seeing me in pain for so long that its sunk in that pregnant women need to be handled with care. That, and crack.

smallblackflowers · 12/11/2010 15:29

zero your DP sounds lovely! Great to hear that you are finally getting the physio that you obviously need too.

40weeks hope your nephew's eye gets sorted soon - what a scary thing to be happening to him.

WanderingSheep · 12/11/2010 16:05

Hello, happy Friday everybody!

Zero your DH was lovely about the car! Smile hope you're ok though!

I've been laughing at poor(?) Mr. 40 not getting his BJ but trying to make it up by buying his pg wife champagne! Grin

I have such sympathy for you ladies with SPD! I walked quite a long way to take DD to a group today. Not unusual as we usually walk but I was in a lot of pain when I got back. It's probably my own fault as I pushed her in the pushchair but she was doing my head in walking as she wasn't doing as she was told!

WanderingSheep · 12/11/2010 16:08

SBF, sorry about your friend. Hope her baby is doing ok. There have been a lot of positive stories on MN about children with Down Syndrome, although it would still knock me for 6 if it happened to me.

americanexpat · 12/11/2010 16:44

SBF - I'm so sorry for your friend, she must be in shock. Did she do the screening or have any indication she was at risk?

One of the cleaners at work just told me I'm looking really well. How do I get someone sainted?

tadjennypumpkinpie · 12/11/2010 16:54

Best wishes to your friend sbf - hope she gets all the support she needs. The stories of your dh are making me giggle 40! At least he was trying with the champagne. Was it a decent brand? Glad you've got your physio sorted zero and your dh was fine about the car. Have to take ds to the doctors this afternoon as his nose still hasn't cleared up after 6 months and various antibiotics. Sad

ledkr · 12/11/2010 17:55

sbf my fabulous sil had her ds baby at 29 with no warnings. She is now 5 and absolutely hillarious and much loved by all of us. If your friend feels she would like to talk to anyone i am sure she would be only too happy. She is very down to earth and did actually consider adoption when she first found out.Just a thought.
What is everyone having done at physio?Mine consisted of some advice and the purchase of a belt.I feel very let down by it all tbh.Havent been back to see Oliver the osteopath as i felt 30 quid was a lot for acupuncture,i need some actual work doen on my pelvis.I went to town today and had agood look round with a stop for a rest but was in agony after and can hardly move now.
pdr i have a sick note for the next 2 wks but am intending/hoping to get another,i couldnt possibly go to work. I have had to devise a little system for taking and collecting dd from school. I waddle half way thensit on a bench and she spots me before walking across the field, today she was late coming out so i sat in the rain for 15 mins, was soaked thru.

linz17xxx · 12/11/2010 19:18

Hi all, got my 4d scan tomorrow and i'm so excited :) has anyone else had one yet?

Grannyapple · 12/11/2010 19:53

Hi Linz I had one last week.....but baby was moving that much & still not chubby enough so I've to go back in 2 weeks. Is amazing tho-from what we could see ds has my nose & hubby's mouth Grin

JustOneMorePlease · 12/11/2010 20:53

Thinking of you friend sbf I was in exactly the same position 7 years ago and it totally floored me.

There are loads of mums on here with loads of experience when she is ready and if she wants any advice. I'm perfectly happy for her to contact me. Where in the country is she? I'm in North Yorkshire. Ds1 was born at 35 weeks really fast and about 6 hours after he was born he was transferred to scbu were they picked up that he had slightly low muscle tone. We had to wait 4 days for a chromosome result to come back.

I was literally on the floor when they told us. But as with all shock news we receive in life, time has helped. He is my little hero and has taught me so much about life.

Your friend will need loads of support and at the same time needs to celebrate the birth of her lovely baby.

Xx

tadjennypumpkinpie · 12/11/2010 21:25

That's a really courageous story justone. Thank you for sharing.

ledkr · 13/11/2010 08:56

justoneyes i forgot about your ds1.You always speak very highly of him, my sil was totally floored too,but is now activly involved with lots of groups and her dd is the apple of her eye.Being an ahem older Mum,i had to think about this possibility and she helped me loads to do it.
linz i had one 2 weeks ago it was amazing and my dd looks exactly like her Dad,they even predicted her weight.Only thing is i gaze at the pics and feel really frustrated that i cant touch her, especially one where she looks all sad.
Off to nct sale today wish me luck. am not really an nct type of mother tbh,but i have never been to one so thought i should have a look.Jumbling this avo too i do love a good jumble.

smallblackflowers · 13/11/2010 09:12

hello all and thank you for your lovely messages regarding my friend. She is a strong and positive lady and seems to be coping amazingly. I don't know what screening she had in pregnancy, and don't know if she knew that her pregnancy was high risk for DS. Am hoping to see her and baby on Monday (if she is up to it) and will mention the fabulous support offered by you lovely ladies, and the amazing mn community.

Ledkr, good luck with the NCT sale - I'm just debating with myself about whether I can manage a trip to the local green grocers, to feed DD's grape addiction - hope you pick up some bargains and not too many bruises!

PDR · 13/11/2010 20:08

Evening everyone!

ledkr I am also going to have to make another trip to the GPs this week as I really don't think I can go back to work. Have you got crutches? I am going to have to start using mine whenever I go out :(

I visited my very good friend who had her baby on Wednesday today. She is still in hospital as the baby has an infection and needs IV antibiotics. She is ok though and feeding well etc. Had to walk from the car park to the maternity unit which is about 200m and was in so much pain! Cannot beleive how bad this SPD is getting. I don't think I had even heard of it during my 1st pregnancy!

DH has gone out tonight to a 40th birthday party. My name was on the invite too (DH + wife) but apparently I would not enjoy myself Hmm so I am at home with a Chinese.

earlgreyismynectar · 13/11/2010 23:08

Evening ladies! It was well worth going back in search of Prof's link that everyone was talking about! How I laughed & how I obviously needed to laugh! DP came through & asked me why I was crying!! Thanks for sharing, much needed! I can relate having an iPhone!

Sbf, so sorry to hear of your friends news, brings it home what a shock this must be at first but you pick up the pieces & move on with what life throws at you. I worked with DS young adults & what a pleasure it was, their honesty & expression of love & appreciation is amazing and yes, as others have echoed, a gift. She will find a lot of support. Brings it home though, it's such a huge piece of news to be told... I heard recently that my ex bro in law remarried recently & had a baby girl just a few weeks ago. She seemed perfect & healthy but her bloods from the heel prick test showed something was wrong & it turns out the poor little thing has Cystic Fibrosis. So sad for them, it's heart breaking. Still, she is my niece & nephews sister & my niece especially with living nearby is going to have a very full & involved relationship with her baby sister. She will be very loved. It turns out that they were both unknowingly carriers of the CF gene which makes the chances of having a baby with CF much greater. It's sad being confronted with these things but we can't dwell on that, they'll be so loved.

Thanks for the comments 40 & Knitta re my self indulgent bit!! Good to share though if anyone got anything out of it, forewarned is forearmed as you said!

Hope everyone's having a nice weekend, another XFactor night in & looking forward to a relaxed day tomorrow & a friends birthday party for DD

WanderingSheep · 14/11/2010 09:24

Morning all!

SBF, I would definitely recommend MN to your friend (if she doesn't already come on here) when she feels up to it. For all the rubbish and bunfights there are on here there is also tremendous support, as we all know, and a very good SN topic which she might find helpful.

Hope everyone had a good day yesterday! We went to the Trafford centre intending to do some more Xmas shopping but I only came away with things for me! Blush I got a jumper dress and a couple of pairs of tracky bottoms for lounging around in. I thought that the tracky bottoms would be good post birth as I can wear them instead of pyjamas when people visit but still give out the message: "I've just given birth, I'm not going to be running around making cups of tea!"

ZeroMinusZero · 14/11/2010 10:14

Just checking in to say hi. Spending the weekend with my parents, had a big family do last night which was nice. A couple of my cousins said they had lots of baby stuff to lend us, which was good. There was also the cutest little boy ever. Another one of my many cousins, he is now four and has grown up sooooo quickly. He was so polite, he was constantly saying please and thank you and was just the lovliest boy ever. Made me feel very guilty for ever saying that I was keen to have a girl as I would be more than happy to have a boy like that.

I find it painful to move around in bed at night and I read that it can help in that regard if you wear silky/satiny pyjamas as they glide around in bed more, so bought some yesterday and they do seem to make it a teeny tiny bit easier to slide around in bed, if anyone wants to try that out. I needed some pyjamas anyway for bfing as I didn't have any with buttons down the front before.

Hope everyone else is well. ledkr was there anything good at that sale?

knittakid · 14/11/2010 10:45

Just a quick hello from here. sbf those are really hard news, it's just interesting how even with all the scans and tests there can still be surprises at birth. Do let us know how they are when you see them, and shocking as it is there probably has never been a better time or place to be born with a disability, in South America disabled kids are still sent away to homes/schools on their own and far from anything else, horrific.

I've had a busy weekend and feel very good, just worried my belly is too big for its age, saw somebody with the same due date as me and she was not showing at all, meanwhile I carry a huge pointy thing!

Hope you all are alright.

angels1 · 14/11/2010 11:52

sbf Just wanted to say thinking of you and your friend. I think everyone here has said it all.

I too was wondering if ledkr lade it out alive from the NCT sale - I hope she took some crutches so she could bash everyone out of the way :)

Good TV last night - x factor followed by TT special. I heard on the radio there are whispers of a suprise double eviction on x factor tonight Hmm . Surely katie has to go now. I also really didn't think cher was that great and then couldn't believe the fab comments she got.

zero interesting what you say about wearing silky pjs to move about. We have silk sheets Blush (sounds a bit kinky but really we only got them as I read silk pillow cases can help stop wrinkles as your face doesn't crinkle about as much when asleep so we thought we'd go the whole hog and get the bed set) bu haven't used them in a while as they are so silky and smooth I tend to practically glide myself out of bed when asleep Wink

wandering I need to get some joggers for lounging about the house - did you get mat ones? I have a pair of regular ones but they are now getting stretched to the limit and holey and old and not sure where to get cheap mat ones from online.

saw this video this morning and thought it amusing - the childs face when the music starts is a picture - hope I find a song with a similar baby calming effect quickly after birth Wink

Yeah I heard it was a double eviction and DH claims to have worked it all out on a spreadsheet and there "must" be a double eviction at some point or they'll have too many people in the final. So does this mean goodbye Wagner at last?
