What's your favourite type of cheese?

chloe55 · 20/09/2005 10:03

Hmmmm Wensleydale with cranberries.

3k · 20/09/2005 10:16

Morning Ladies,

I know you just said to change the subject but I will also be really poor when on maternity leave as mine will work out at £90 a week!!! It's really bad. I've started buying a pack of nappies each time I go shopping just to get a supply in and my friend gave me so many newborn baby clothes at the weekend as her little'un is too big for them now that I wont need to buy any newborn. I'm going to attempt bigger clothes in the sales and a pack or two of nappies a month so that I dont have to worry about that side of things when baby comes. It is a worry but things will work out, I was surprised at what I have been given already

Double Gloucester with chives and onion.

Staying out of the money conversation as now feel guilty that we won't struggle, despite me only get the basic maternity allowance (for self-employed folk).

I promise that if ever we get to all meet up, I'll buy the first round though

flamesparrow · 20/09/2005 10:45

Oops, forgot that cheese might not be a good subject change

Glad to hear first round's on you! I'm not worrying so much about when the next one comes, in cloth nappies, and breastfeeding so not much on expenses for a while. Still have cot etc from DD, so just clothes really, and I'm hoping to get by on as little as possible.

flamesparrow · 20/09/2005 10:45

Pressed post too early, meant to finish that it is the normal money issues that worry me!

Never feel guilty for not having money worries!

Tabs · 20/09/2005 10:55

Thanks guys - get a bit paranoid about it, especially after that thread the other week about how much partners had to earn to allow you to be a SAHM.

Suppose I'm poor in comparison to the one who earned £2m!!!

OP posts:
flamesparrow · 20/09/2005 11:00

Lol - Some people earn truly scary amounts!

Frizbe · 20/09/2005 13:33

hmmm Amanda1, go with the fate thing

Argh Tabs don't even go there! I'm self employeed, but because I've not paid myself the requsit wage over the year (do to my little co.being fledgling) I don't qualify for basic maternity pay from the gov! ARRRRRGGGHHHHHHHH, so straight back to work for me.......

Chloe etc, dont' worry too much, for starters you get your £16.10, extra off the gov straight away, for your 1st child, in fact I think this may be going up/have just gone up to £16.80??
If you also apply for your tax credits from the gov straight away, they'll really help you out to, particularly if you work out to be low income! so don't despair too much, the current gov actually pay you a bit, to have kids!

Tabs · 20/09/2005 13:39

Oh Frizbe - will you not at least be entitled to maternity allowance then? I run as a sole trader rather than limited co, which means it probably costs me more in tax overall, but I don't have to worry about faffing with salary versus dividend. You hardly have to have earned anything to qualify for MA. I'd certainly look into it if I were you.

OP posts:
Frizbe · 20/09/2005 13:53

already have Tabs, I've not drawn the requsit monies in wages over 12 mths, trust me I'm a kicking myself! I ploughed it all back into the business you see, and we've managed to scrape by with dh's wage, just.......think if I'm lucky I may get a Sure Start maternity grant! but feel silly asking for one of those with my own co. in tow!
