pacita gaviscon contains calcium so you're providing all the ingredients for your baby to have a strong skeleton. I'm sure there is probably a downside somewhere but need to convince myself it's healthy as I'm not sure I could live without at the moment Smile

I've never really figured out why they make you carry all the pots of wee around as I've done the wee straight on the stick thing when I've forgotten. No chance of anything leaking that way, it's not happened yet but I'm always paranoid that one day the pot will end up all over my bag.

walkthedog I got sent for the gestational diabetes test with DS because my blood test was high in sugar - what I didn't know until afterwards is they compare your blood to a fasting level (or they do here anyway), I'd had a huge lunch so not surprising it was high. The glucose tolerance came out fine but it was not pleasant starving in preperation!

I've been trying to get the garden into some sort of order before it gets too cold but it's a bit of a slow process. I know I'm unlikely to have much time next spring...

lovechristmas · 21/10/2010 21:02

Quick message for superparty with both my pregnancies now my antenatal care has been terrible in relation to the gestational diabetes.
Go through your GP for an oral glucose tolerance and you will find the diabetic unit of your local hosp brilliant should anything come of it. In advance cut out refined sugar and keep a diary of what you eat... that really speeds the process up. If I can be of any help please let me know xxx

superparty · 24/10/2010 17:09

Hi all

Did post on friday but it disappeared.

MW finally got back to me on thursday at 4pm, said bloods are ok, so as its only in my wee its not affecting the baby. its called glycosuria apparently.

Now have started itching like mad, only on ankles at mo, but mw said as i'm due to have bloods taken for hb next week she will get it tested for liver thing as well. the joys of being pg one thing to worry about after another.

half term next week so i have a week off work but 5 children to watch, happy days, you watch it be rainging every day.

have good weekends

Pacita · 24/10/2010 21:42

scarysnufflebeast, excellent point about the calcium in gaviscon. I shall quaff it with relish, now (bleurgh!).

Good to hear about your results, superparty. And good luck managing with 5 - god, you MUST be organised, I struggle with one!

littlehuman · 25/10/2010 13:56

hi
been busy working like mad.
i try to make the most of it while i can to earn my "own" money.gonna be weird to have to rely on dh for cash lol!always like to be dependent seem i am a teen.

not for just yet, but has anyone have any preference between babywipes or cottonwool.
obviously babywipes look a lot more practicle for when you r out but for home?
sorry for silly questions but i am new to all of this ;-)

mummychicken · 25/10/2010 16:34

littlehuman Not a daft question at all - the hospital taught me to top and tail (2 bowls of water, one for each end Grin and to wipe with cotton wool) which is very gentle with delicate skin. However, I got REALLY frustrated with it quite quickly (for reasons of laziness) and soon moved on to wet wipes - BUT DS had no skin problems.

I also bought some reusable fleece wipes which were alot less fiddly than cotton wool and just as gentle (I used them with DS til he was weaned - then you want to have a little to do with poo as possible!!!)

scarysnufflemonster · 25/10/2010 19:52

superparty glad it's not too serious about the sugar but sounds like you're still going through it a bit. I hope it's not the liver thing (which I also can't remember the name of or how to spell), if you've got through 5 pregnancies without it it just seems a bit unfair for it to start now.

littlehuman for employment after the birth have you considered running a mum and baby exercise class? There's someone round here who does it, kind of pram push with personal trainer aspects. Probably wouldn't work if you had a very colicky baby but might be worth a try, loads of them sleep when they're being pushed about...
We were a bit overly PFB about the cotton wool and probably used it til DS was 18 monthsish (although not while out and about) Blush. No bottom problems here but I'm not sure I'll bother for as long this time.

We've started potty training today as DS just went for it and did a poo and a wee in the potty first thing. I was thinking it would be nice to have a few weeks off nappies but the washing is piling up as he's had a few accidents!

kiwijesta · 25/10/2010 20:17

Hi everyone,

Had my 28 week midwife checkup today and all was good, midwife laughed when I said my kankles at the end of the day were the same as they get after flying to NZ. She said as my BP and pee were fine, its just an occupational hazzard of pregnancy. I am now wearing knee high socks (football ones in the weekend and knee highs at work) which seem to help stop the indents.

Baby is sitting across my belly (transverse, probably due to my low lying placenta) but I've decided not to worry as there is nothing I can do about it, hopefully it will have moved by my 34 week scan in early Dec.

Some one mentioned last week (I think) that they got a haircut, and how good it felt. I decided to join in and splashed out as a local salon had a deal for full head of highlights, cut and blowdry for £60, which is good near Ldn. I'm now feeling very glamorous!

PS Sorry for the long post!
PPS am planning on going to a halloween party this weekend as a bun in the oven!

MacMomo · 26/10/2010 11:57

Just had a small wake up call - 11 weeks to go and I don't finish work until I'm 3 weeks to go. We have done / bought NOTHING. Don't know where to start! As I have been sent away by work to live 250 miles from DH, I have just panicked that I'm running out of time to get organised.

Has anyone found a good basic list of what you need to get for the first few weeks? I am getting totally lost between moses basket and car seats that turn into carry cots (isn't that a moses basket sort of?) and then travel 'systems'. Then there's cots and cribs - are they different? and today I read about sleeping grobags for the first time! instead of blankets apparently. And when do you need to start using the baby monitors?

Basic list and top tips anywhere?

mummychicken · 26/10/2010 14:47

MacMomo Time creeps up doesn't it!! My DS was due in Sept and my Mum visited in August she said where the baby stuff - I had bought precisely NOTHING!!

As long as you have somewhere flat for baby to sleep, something to transport them in a car and some way to transport them when walking (pram/sling) you'll be fine for the first few months.

Don't get bullied into thinking that if you don't spend a fortune you're a crap parent. I was lucky as I was given a lot of stuff and used ebay.

YOU DO NOT NEED A BABYWIPE HEATER!!Grin

But you do need some muslins to mop up baby sick!!

OP posts:
MacMomo · 26/10/2010 15:33

Unfortunately I am isolated away from home and living with (very nice) people I don't know, all of whom are men and can't give me any advice. If I don't buy things, I won't even have a bed for it (DH not especially proactive).

I need a list and an afternoon with amazon and ebay!

I should say a short list - DH earmarked for redundancy Sad.

mummychicken · 26/10/2010 15:58

Someone alot more clued up than me will hopefully be along to give a better list, but here are my suggestions of what you need initially.

moses basket or crib (depends on how big your room is - we couldn't fit cot into ours so moses basket was ideal for first 6 months. DS moved into his own room at 5 months, but we put the basket in his cot so he could get used to it). Ebay/car boot -you will also need "holey" blankets NOT fleece as babies can over heat with fleece. ebay/carboot/freecycle. This is assuming of course you are not co-sleeping.

Car seat - I peronally would get a group 0-1 which is rear facing til about 9 months and will last til about 4yo. However, this is NOT a infant carrier. Argos have ones for less than £40 (I would buy new).

Pram - ideally one that goes flat BUT my DS would only lie flat for 3 months so a new pram is a waste of money IMO. My friend finds amazing prams in car boots - also try free cycle. If you have a car - check it fits in the boot!!

Baby grows, vests, nappies for day and night indoors.

Outside -a little hat, don't need snowsuits at first just wrap them in a blanket (can be fleece for outside)and/or sling. I think babies look really cute in baby grows so I don't intend to put on little outfits til about 6 months - again prefernce. Try free cycle.

For you - lots of maternity pads, nipple pads

If you are intending to breast feed, don't bother with any expensive sterilising/steaming stuff. Use cold water tablets (milton etc) and an ice cream tub once/if you start to introduce bottles of formula or expressed milk.

Breast pump - but wait till you see how you get on with bf first.

A bouncy chair - again not an instant necessity.

Finally - lots of cuddles are an absolute MUST!!

Hope that helps

mummychicken · 26/10/2010 16:01

And a baby bath -again try car boot/freecycle. However, my mum bathed me in a washing up bowl and I've done the same for DS when on holiday so it's not a real necessity

OP posts:
littlehuman · 26/10/2010 16:09

mummychicken
ahahah just checked if i had everything on the list since you are a experienced mum!

babywipe heater? does this seriously exist?i bought my cotton wool from asda this morning 2 big bag for 2pounds, and a couple of packets of johnson wipes for when we are out.

still miss all the pads for me for various leaks lol!

looking forward to saturday, a friend photographer is going to do a "pregnancy shoot" so we got nice photos of the bump as a souvenir.

mummychicken · 26/10/2010 22:03

littlehuman Yes they do exist (no I don't have one).I remember seeing an article in the paper when DS was born about how new babies can cost over £7,000 in the first year - but when you read the list it included babywipe warmers and a whole load of other crap stuff to make new parents feel guilty that they haven't spent the earth and therefore are bad parents!!! If you're that concerned about cold wipes on warm bums, leave the pack on the radiator!!

Are you doing the photo shoot in the style of Demi Moore/Mylene Class?

OP posts:
kiwijesta · 26/10/2010 22:35

MacMomo i've only just started getting stuff, got a Mamas and Papas cot on ebay, almost brand new for £25 so just have to buy a new mattress. And so far thats about it, except for a box or two of nappies, one of my friends recommended just popping them in while shopping and when they've been on special I've done that.

Good luck with the shopping, I think it will be fun, once I get used to spending so much money on someone so small, hehe

Amberc · 27/10/2010 09:38

Welcome Amber - how exciting, our only twins!

OP posts:
Amberc · 27/10/2010 10:42

Exciting but very scary! I am the size of a 40 week singleton pregnancy woman already! Actually another woman on my twins thread was due a couple of days after me and went into labour on Monday at 26 weeks! I am hoping to last until 10 Jan so I can have a c section on my private health insurance and stay in a nice room with miswives who will take the babies away so I can sleep!! If I go before then I have to go to my local hospital in case the babies need special care (ins wont cover). Any South East residents?

Hi,

Just adding myself to the list!

I have a 2 year old girl and this is my second. I think it is a girl though don't know for sure.

Little girl was 15 days late (induced and all over in 3 hours) so not sure what to expect with this one.

cotswolder · 27/10/2010 14:09

protocol? do I add myself to the list and repost?

littlehuman · 27/10/2010 15:07

mummychicken 7000 pounds!!! where do people buy their stuff!!! all brand new in john lewis!! lol
though i am a caring person , littlegirl will be fine with cold wipes! we live in scotland , she ll have to toughen up ahaha
i ll rather save that money to go in a nice family holiday or do nice stuff later that she ll remember when shes older.

MacMomo · 27/10/2010 16:45

mummychicken - thank you, I think you may have saved my life. Was near meltdown last night! I was relying on my mum being around for the first few weeks, but now she's probably in Australia for my sister's (last-minute, annoyingly timed) wedding instead. Don't know what I'll do without my mum!

mummychicken · 27/10/2010 19:52

MacMomo What a cow your sister is!!!! You will be fine - you don't need all the crap, as long baby is fed, winded and warm it will be fine. You sound ALOT more prepared than I was, I spent so much time panicking about the birth I wasn't really prepared for the actual baby!! I'm sure your Mum will be an angel when she does get there, if she misses the first few days/weeks it's not the end of the world. I found my Mum more useful when she came down 3 weeks later when the lack of sleep was kicking in, the adreniline rush had gone and the house was resembling a tip.
