Hello everyone

We did it!!

Our baby daughter was born at 10:39pm on Saturday 2nd July, weighing 7lbs 10oz.

It was a really good birth. I can't believe I'm saying that after the birth of dd1, but it's true, those midwives don't lie about second ones often being easier. I was so sceptical, not to mention pissed off as I was already 9 days late, lining up inducement accupuncture appts and had pretty much resigned myself to having a horrible time of it.

I couldn't have my sweep because my cervix was still quite posterior, so I was really down about that. On Saturday though I started getting a few twinges, real deep cervical type ones that made me think something could be happening. I spent all morning monitoring these twinges, but they tailed off disappointingly at about lunchtime, even though I was running up and down stairs and bouncing on the birth ball for all I was worth.

At 3pm I went up for a nap and after about 10 minutes my waters broke. We dropped dd off at a friends and went off to the hospital. The mw confirmed waters had broken and we decided to go home to wait and see, otherwise we would be back within 24 hours for an inducement.

We went home and I was still thinking, "well, I guess I'll be induced tomorrow instead of Tuesday, might as well watch the rest of Live8 " As soon as we got home (5pm) contractions started every 10 minutes. Dp and I went for a nap, assuming we'd be in for a long night, I barely got any sleep as contractions speeded up even lying down. We got up again at about 8 and I lay on the sofa while (brilliant) dp helped me with my breathing. At about 9pm I couldn't take anymore and we called the hospital and said we were going in. I'd been hesitant to go in earlier because last time, I contracted all night and was only about 3 cm when we got to the delivery suite. I was convinced this would be the same.

We got to the hospital, somehow! I was examined at 945 and was 5cm and 'stretchy'. I could barely believe it. Started on the gas and air and had to walk around or sit up because dd2's head needed to go down a bit more. We waited for the birthpool to be filled and I got in there at 10:15. Contractions started getting very intense and I ws sucking that entonox like a good un. Pretty soon I needed to push, which freaked me out big time because I thought I would have ages to go, plus I'd never felt the head pushing down before as last time I'd had an epidural. It was really frightening.

Somehow I managed to take in what the mw was telling me to do, but my god it was hard!! Anyway, dd was born underwater, 25 minutes after I got in the pool, and emerged screaming her head off

It was surreal, dp and I were in shock that it all happened so quickly after our first birth experience.

So, we went home in the early hours of the morning and have been chilling out at home ever since. Dd1 is coping as well as can be expected, for a 2 year old. Dd2 is being bf and has taken to that pretty well, god those sore nipples though !!

Lots of love to all xxx

Congratulations

LipstickMum · 06/07/2005 22:23

Ah yes, I had a brand new lipstick for the post birth piccies

I'm slathering on the Lansinoh Mears, and going bare boobed as often as I can, it tends to stick to everything...anything you can do about that? Cabbage leaves in your bra..? The midwife who came round was very 'no nonsense' and shoved dd2's head onto the breast, but it totally worked, stopped her head wobbling around like she was bobbing for apples. So we are really being conscientious about the latching on, it's so crucial.

Thanks for all the lovely congratulations
