Joseph Edward arrived at 4.30am on Saturday, 7lbs 12oz of loveliness !!
Had period type pain all day on Friday which gradually became more contraction-like as the day wore on. Called Marslady, my lovely doula, at 8pm to let her know that something was definitely happening but didn't need her yet - Mars was just about to go to a concert so I was worried I was going to spoil her night out! Contractions gradually got stronger during the evening and I called Mars to come at midnight, just as her concert was finishing .
Things started to get more painful and I was just thinking about going into hospital when my waters broke at 2.30am. Struggled out of the house with a lot of help from Mars and dh, did a bit of bellowing in the street outside, and made it to hospital by 3am. The midwife examined me and I was absoultely delighted to be told that I was 9cm dilated - yeah! I was hoping to have a VBAC and had been really worried about continuous monitoring, having a canula etc., but as I was so far along when we got to the hospital none of that was an issue. Mars did a fantastic job of coaching me through another hour of contractions, she really made me use the gas and air properly and helped me to breathe through the contractions. Then 25 mins of pushing and my gorgeous boy was out!!
I had been really worried about having a VBAC but am so glad that I decided to go for it. I can't recommend having a doula highly enough - without Marslady I wouldn't have had the confidence to stay at home as long as I did and would have been worried about unnecessary intervention at the hospital. The birth was better than I could have dared hope for and I am so thrilled to be at home with my boys and no post c-section recovery to deal with

Hello Birdyarms. many congratulations on the birth of Joseph Edward!
I am so glad you got your VBAC and lovely Marslady was there to assist - have you sampled some lemon drizzle cake?, lol.
I too am hoping for a VBAC, in fact, I hope my birth in May goes along the same lines as yours! I would love marsy to be my Doula, but as I am in Yorkshire, it just is not practical. I have spoken to a local Doula and hopefully things will work out just as well as your birth.

i do like happy endings.

lulumama · 01/03/2007 14:41

Congratulations

And well done Marslady

BirdyArms · 01/03/2007 14:57

Good luck gingerbear - really hope that everything works out well for your VBAC. Having a doula is definitely a good plan - made me a lot more confident that I would have a successful VBAC. I really think that confidence and positive thinking make a huge difference - you can do it!!!

Birdy did all the work. I was simply her support. I've not stopped grinning since Joseph was born. It was such a lovely lovely birth.

Birdy managed her pain incredibly well and believe me she didn't bellow in the street. She was amazing. I was truly thrilled that she was 9cm when we arrived.

Gorgeous birth and I am so so privileged to have shared it with them.

hertsnessex · 01/03/2007 16:04

Oh, congratulations, Birdy! Welcome to Joseph Edward - lovely name!

Well done, Marsy! Make sure she makes you a lemon drizzle cake, OK?

TeeCee · 01/03/2007 16:48

ohhhh how lovely.

Hmm am thinking I might like Marsy for me now.
Marsy can you deliver as well or do I need a midwife and a doula?

Saturn74 · 01/03/2007 16:53

Congratulations, BirdyArms, and welcome to Joseph Edward - what a beautiful name.

And well done to Mars too!

Marscentio · 01/03/2007 18:58

TeeCee you would need both.

Still haven't delivered a ldc to Birdy though Will have to do one this weekend.

hunkermunker · 01/03/2007 18:59

Honestly, she goes to all the trouble of giving birth - the least you could do is make a LDC, Marsy

(Have her, TC - she's lovely!)

DimpledThighs · 01/03/2007 19:05

congrats to all concerned!
