Carmen Rosalind Esme was born at 5.36pm on Sat 10 Sept, delivered in our bathroom by ambulance crew after a scary half-hour labour. 8lb 6oz (ow ) and beautiful.

All well - I'm a bit sore but beginning to emerge from the shock ... full story to follow at some point

Congratulations. Lovely name. Was hoping to meet you at the Wagamamas meet up because you sound like your situation is similar to mine. I live in Islington, have a 23 month old and have planned to have my second one (any day now) at home. You couldn't make it unfortuantely but I"m dying to hear your birth story. So it's true that second births are quicker is it?! Hope it wasn't too traumatic...

Thanks for all the messages everyone

Sorry it's taken me a while to come back with my birth story. Here goes ...

As some of you know, my biggest fear was being induced like last time, esp when things started to go a bit deja vu (waters leaking 2 days before EDD - which was 5 Sept). UCH midwives and doctors were very understanding about this and didn't pressure us into anything - in the meantime I started having acupuncture. Quite significant contractions started during the 3rd session (Wed 7th) and built up till on Thu night I was having painful contractions every 8 mins. We called the mws, they came straight out, parents came and whisked DD away, we filled the pool, got some rest and ..... nothing happened - the contractions faded away and the midwives went home. Nightmare.

In desperation I decided to give the acupuncture one last go so had a session early Sat AM (10th), and contractions started up again during the session. Went to DAU for routine monitoring straight after - could see contractions on trace, but they weren't painful so I didn't get too excited.

Back at home that afternoon, the contractions were starting to get painful, but nothing worse than on Thu night. DD (19m) was getting restless so DH decided to take her swimming. I got him to empty the pool first so that it was ready for re-filling, and wasn't sure about him going but also didn't want a repeat performance of Thu night so said 'OK, go, but be quick.'

Started tidying up, and while in DD's room felt a very dramatic POP (aha - so my waters hadn't broken prematurely a week ago after all ) and contractions immediately becoming much more serious. Rang DH, who fortunately had just got to the door of the swimming pool, and he rushed straight back, calling mws and parents along the way. By the time he reached the end of the street he could hear me bellowing, and by the time he got up to our flat I was on my knees in the bedroom, in pretty advanced labour.

Ah - to be continued - DD2 calls ....

OK, to continue ...

Poor DH ended up rushing between me (I was at the 'don't touch me' stage and was having nothing to do with him) and DD who he'd dumped in her cot - she tolerated this to start with but when he shut the door in an attempt to protect her from the terrible noise I was making she went crazy. So there he was, trying to phone my parents, midwives, friends nearby who'd offered to be on emergency standby (one was away, the other had her phone switched off), and couldn't hear a thing for the 2 females screaming their lungs out around him.

The midwives and my parents were stuck in Saturday-afternoon traffic and by now I was in the bathroom - the toilet seat was the only place I could bear to be - and I reached down and could feel the baby's head beginning to push through. I didn't want an ambulance as I associated this with going to hospital but DH phoned for one anyway (thank god), refused to answer all the background info questions they started quizzing him for, told them we needed them NOW and put the phone down. I was now holding on with all my might to stop the baby coming before anyone arrived, but they came amazingly quickly - probably less than 5 mins - and in marched 3 ambulance crew to our tiny bathroom. I was screaming 'Pain relief!!! Now!!!' but there was no time for any such thing. The first ambulanceman through the door - a huge burly bloke who filled our bathroom - tried to persuade me to come out of there but when I realised he wanted to get me onto the bed to examine me I yelled that I wasn't going anywhere and stood my ground. So now that someone was actually there to deliver the baby, I finally let go and, standing with one hand on our towel rail and the other gripping the poor paramedic's shoulder, and with DH standing in the doorway holding DD, out came DD2's head and then her body with barely a push required on my part.

All I could say was "I DID IT!!!!!". In spite of all the incredible pain, the feeling of giving birth naturally (ie without all the horrible intervention of last time) was the most exhilarating thing in the world. I'd torn and bled quite badly - the bathroom looked like a scene from a horror film - but I'd done it, my baby was in my arms (in spite of the amulance crew's attempts to clean and wrap her first) and it felt amazing.

My parents turned up minutes later, pretty shocked to find the baby had arrived already, and off I went to my own bed to start breastfeeding (she sucked for about 2 hours!) and admire the new little person. The midwives when they finally arrived were lovely, helping me to shower (I'll always remember one of them drying between my toes), cleaning up and changing the sheets so that somehow our bedroom looked like a hotel when I came back through. Stitches - which I'd been dreading - were a breeze as I finally got to experience gas and air - wahay! - and giggled my way through them.

So there you have it - not quite the serene waterbirth I'd had in mind, but a bizarrely positive experience nonetheless.
