Please forgive my horrible lack of tact.

If your late dh was paying a stamp, and was under 60, you are entitled to a £2000 one off grant which is non means tested. The form that you need is the BB1 04/07. This is collected from the local Jobcentre, you will need to show them the death certificate.

YOu may also be entitled to means tested assistance for the funeral itself.

THis form is the one that also registers you to the widowed parents allowance

If I can be of any help to you with wading through the ghastly paperwork, please let me know

MB - you are amazing, to be thinking of helping someone else in your time of grief.

Lovely of you to do this MB. I'm sure it will be much appreciated.

Thank you so much for the information, I know a little of your story and like others think you are wonderful to be offering support to others. It is good to know that you understand, and I will definitely make some calls tomorrow.

BTW you weren't tactless, you are obviously a very practical person like myself, my friend says I am by nature a coper and that is my way of dealing with this dreadful situation, by sorting and writing lists etc. Thank you again.
