Cried ugly tears at Ghosts

My dad died 10 years ago this year, he never met my kids - one of whom is named after him. I watched the Death Day episode of Ghosts last night (yes, a bit behind the times!), where we learn how Pat died and how his family come to 'visit' him, and he learns he has a grandson who they've named after him.

And it just hit me, that he's gone. Again. And how long it's been. And how he'll never know about his grandson named after him. Or his granddaughter.

Just wanted to get this out there really.

It is a very emotive episode 💐

One of the hardest things about losing a loved one isn't just the fact they're gone, it's that it takes so long to believe they REALLY are gone, not just now but forever and whatever happens next doesn't include them anymore. If you believe in life after death it's different, I don't, and I just hold them in my heart

That episode is an absolute heart-wrencher

My Dad died almost 50 years ago. At my GCs birthday party, I watched him running around the garden shrieking with laughter with his older relatives and was suddenly totally overcome with grief for the fact that my Dad never met my children, let alone my grandchildren. It hit me like a truck and there were definitely ugly tears. Lots of them. My daughter was totally taken aback as I'm not really a crier. She was also amazing making sure I was left alone for a bit.

I get where you're coming from OP. It just jumps up out of nowhere occasionally.

I think I'll give that episode a miss!

That episode is hard hitting.
I lost my dad when I was 23. That’s 33 years ago. He didn’t see the big stuff even when he was alive because he was so ill for several years. He didn’t celebrate exams passed, weddings, grandchildren or any of our achievements (I’m one of 4 dc). DS(17) is so like him it’s untrue, it’s bizarre that they’ll never meet. And a bit unfair - they’d have loved each others quirkiness. DM has been widowed for far longer than my parents were married and we’re running out of people who knew him.

I'm so sorry for all your losses, I think it was just the unexpectedness of that episode that got me.

@AppleButterGutterI understand that feeling, I stayed with my mum last year for a few days with the kids while I was on mat leave and for some reason ended up having a water fight with my oldest in her garden just before bed time, when I came back in she was in tears as it was just the sort of thing my dad would have done with us.

Be very careful with the later episode where Pat wants to watch the old VHS tape (I think it might have been a Xmas special) it’s brutal. But wonderful in the way Ghosts manages to be so awfully poignant.
Ok just checked it’s the series 4 Xmas special called “It’s behind you”.
