Given watch by husband of deceased, do I need to pay for valuation?

When my MIL died, her husband gave me the watch she was wearing. It was one he had bought her.
I've now been asked to get it valued as it forms part of her Estate. No problem there, he understands that but it was given at a time of great emotion etc.

So, the valuation is £75. Should I ask him to pay for this (I guess he'll take it out of her Estate?).

I like the watch and am touched, but I don't really want to pay £75 in order to keep it in my possession.

I have no experience of this at all. I suppose I could just give it back to him and say I'm happy to receive it once it's all above board.

Sorry for your loss OP if you have a local independent jewellers they will do a valuation for usually a small fee, was my understanding though the same as Comefromaway Longines are very nice watches but not in the same league value wise of Cartier/Rolex

Yes, the cheapest (brand new) are £900-£1,000 then the ones with tiny diamonds for numbers are about £1,300-£1,500. The ones with more diamonds are about £2,000-£3,000 but there are some very expensive £5,000 ish ones with alligator leather etc.

I’m sorry for your loss.
Our local auction house does free valuations (properly written up) every Friday.

Maybe that would be a way to go, if you feel your relative is overwhelmed

Thanks. I'll look into this. I don't know the first thing about auction houses!
I'm wondering why people used this paid service when there seem to be so many free one. It's all new to me.

There are no diamonds or alligators!
