Has anyone used this. DFIL passed away and holds some accounts in his own name and some jointly with DMIL. DMIL has undiagnosed dementia and is incapable of paying bills etc so trying to help but I'm worried about what happens to the direct debits if we tell authorities/ utilities through this service. Presume they won't stop or freeze accounts.

Also DFIL left a Will but DMIL is executor along with the bank. Obviously she can't do this so wondering what happens here,

Thanks

So much to sort out..

It’s only for council stuff, I still had to tell the banks and they will freeze accounts but if you have online access you can change DD over to an account in mil name.

The tell us once don’t inform bank accounts

the inform, state pension but not private pension, council tax and a list of about 20 other government type services

there is a service for list bank accounts but I’m not sure what it’s called. A friend used it recently for her FIL as he’d gone in a home and they have a court thing instead of POA

sorry for you loss

Also if you can get dementia diagnosed you can then apply to not pay council tax

look at court of protection for MIL if she doesn’t have a POA sorted

look at getting your mil attendance allowence as it’s not means tested it’ll not matter if she has savings

check out age concern lost accounts

as you telephone or contact gas, electric, water tell them the direct debit needs to be sorted

I'm in this sort of situation OP - my mum is executor for my Grandad's will, but she has early stage of dementia and just isn't capable of doing it.

Get in touch with a solicitor to arrange being appointed power of attorney for being executor, and if probate is needed they'll help you apply for it as it's more complex when you're doing it as an attorney.

Tell it once is super easy and helpful - definitely use it.

Re: bank accounts - any that are joint will just revert to your MILs name, solo accounts will be frozen, so make sure any direct debits are transferred.

Happy to message directly if you have more questions. Death admin is a ball ache, especially when what you want and need to be doing is grieving. I'm sorry for your loss x
