Current funeral waiting time

A family member passed away yesterday, how long is the current wait time for funerals?

I know a lot of people pass at this time. Pre Covid a family member died at Christmas and we had to wait 5 weeks.

It depends on the particular crem, but it also depends on whether the family want a more popular time of day or are happy to have a time that is less popular.
So if you want / need a 2pm slot, you will wait longer than if you are happy to have the first slot of the day.
Some people have to wait for inquests, post mortems, etc.

All that said, I am going to a funeral soon of someone who died before Christmas, needed an inquest, and it is still less than 4 weeks.

My Mom died in November and we were surprised that it was just a two week wait for her cremation.
She’d been in hospital though so the death certificate was issued two days afterwards with no need for a post mortem and I’d heard of long waiting times to register but as soon as the certificate was issued I called the registrar’s office and could’ve had a same day appointment if I’d wanted.

My Mum died on 26 November but her death was referred to the Coroner for inquest. She was released by the Coroner just before Christmas and her funeral is on 16 January.

Sorry for your loss 💐
The waiting time for a funeral will depend on where you live, what type of funeral desired, also circumstances that may affect the certifications needed and registering, so there is no straightforward answer on MN.

My Aunt died in London 30th Dec and still waiting on a date. They are hoping 27th Jan but still to confirm

OdeToBarney · 09/01/2023 21:58

Death 18th December, funeral 16th January. West London.

2chocolateoranges · 09/01/2023 22:02

There will be a backlog due to Christmas just now.

my mil passed away in November and funeral was 17days after she died.

MaggieFS · 09/01/2023 22:02

Sorry for your loss. It will depend on where you are and if there is to be a burial or cremation.

LordEmsworth · 09/01/2023 22:05

Burial is faster than cremation where I am.

Mum died 30th Dec, we could do the burial any time but church not available till 17th Jan.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 09/01/2023 22:08

It was three weeks between my
mother’s death and a slot at the crem last month (North London).

elfd · 09/01/2023 23:56

The funeral has been arranged and will happen in 4 weeks.

Sorry for everyone here who has lost someone x

My Dad died on Christmas day. Funeral is 30th January. When I spoke to the coroner, he'd had 50 cases come in on the Tuesday after Christmas. 😭Wiltshire.

LemonTreeSkies · 11/01/2023 05:00

My grandad died 8th December and I don’t think my mum even has the death certificate yet. Someone has certainly dropped the ball somewhere 😔

Ralphiesaurus · 11/01/2023 08:33

My Mum died 10 December. Her funeral and cremation are next week, 18th Jan. Earliest slot available at the time.

Tumbleweed101 · 11/01/2023 22:42

Mum died 3rd Jan, simple death (no coroner) and funeral on 25th Jan.

My husband died on May27th this year and his funeral was last Thursday 22nd June. He was buried so there was a longer wait than there would have been for a cremation.

loubieloo4 · 01/07/2023 00:36

My dh (42) passed away 9th June (expected and in a hospice) his funeral isn't until 28th July 🥺

Another local crematorium to us is closed for refurbishment so double the amount of people in our small is crem.

chocolateisavegetable · 06/08/2023 20:35

Are waiting times shorter in the Summer?
