Bereavement counselling

My mum passed away in August and I’m finding it really difficult to get on with my life. I realise it’s still early days but I don’t feel it’s getting any easier. I’m considering having bereavement counselling but unsure how to access it. I’m not really in a position to pay £40 a session privately. Any advice would be welcome.

Sorry for your loss. I’ve been wondering the same but can you do it via GP? I just lost my mum on 13 December but my DF is also ill and I could lose him early next year sometime so going to be an ongoing merrygoround where I don’t think I’ll be able to move on from one bereavement knowing I’ll have another soon! I think I will need to have an outlet to try and make sense of all this. I’ll be trying my gp and if not, I have some assistance I can seek from work (cynical about using the work one?). What was cause of death if you mind me asking? My dad has terminal cancer so I’m wondering if there is also support from Macmillan or something like that?

I went to my GP to seek counselling. It wasn't possible to get it on the NHS (they said the waiting list was over 5 years but I think it depends on where you live). They did suggest CRUISE and MIND. CRUISE wont help if you have suicidal thoughts but were very nice. MIND didn't have. anything suitable for me (their suppose was focused on gang related issues and people from different. cultures- but again that may differ depending on where you live). I have ended up paying privately (£200 an hour!!) - so it has limited how often I can go and have had to use credit cards etc. The therapist was recommended by my GP and is someone that I may have seen if I had ever go through the NHS waiting list.

In short I think there can be services available to help but it depends on where you live. Good luck.
