MC/D&C VETERANS PLEASE HELP EXPATINSCOTLAND! *LONG*

K, was supposedly 8 weeks along.

Was referred to Early Pregnancy Unit at Inverclyde Royal Hospital for scan as had bad D&V bug on Monday and then spotting.

Got scan.

There's a sac but nothing in it.

This does not surprise me and tbh I am relieved because were not in a good position to have a third child.

BUT, was NEVER told, 'It's a blighted ovum'.

I had told them I came in from a rural area.

In fact, folks, I left here at 6.45AM and walked back in my front door at 12.30.

Instead, they tell me to come back on Monday for another scan 'to make sure there are no changes.'

Then I ask them about what if there are no changes?

They tell me I can have a D&C there.

I ask about anaesthetics.

They say it's under GA.

I tell them I cannot have GA because I have genetic hyperthermia - a condition which causes my core body temp to shoot up sky high and which nearly killed me in an operating threatre 11 years ago.

Hence, I have had the following: three knee surgeries including a major ligament replacement, three impacted wisdom teeth extractions, a colposcopy, a loop electroexision procedure on my cervix and a forceps delivery all under local or regional anaesthetics.

So they tell me that I'll have to go to the Royal Alexandria Hospital at Paisley for the D&C and they'll speak to the anaesthetist.

No mention of getting hold of the tablets that help you to expel an unviable pregnancy at home.

SOOOOOO, I'm supposed to go in there Monday morning and sit in a crowded waiting room full of pregnant women drinking water to fill up my bladder for them to tell me - wait, they never fing told me 'blighted ovum' - I need a D&C.

Then go to Paisley - a further 20 miles away - for a consultant to see me.

Then go BACK to Paisley for a D&C, because I can tell you right now I will gladly sit on this blighted ovum from now until the world ends before I let that consultant at Inverclyde touch me again, OR wait for a D&C in a waiting room of an antenatal unit and recover from a miscarriage whilst hearing newborn babies cry.

Has anyone been in this situation?

And if I have other options besides D&C or D&C under GA, which I would never have in a shithole like Inverclyde anyway because I'd for sure die under their incompetence.

We are furious at NHS Argyll for making an utter pisstake of maternity services for an entire, massive region of the country.

To the point where DH is looking to transfer again - to Perthsire.

Oh bugger expat

Sorry you've had bad news, and sorry they've mucked you about so much at such a bad time.

southeastastra · 22/11/2007 13:07

sorry to hear that expat

sfxmum · 22/11/2007 13:07

sorry the service has been so crap

I had a blighted ovum discovered at 12wks 6yrs ago and I was given the option to 'let mc happen' or go for D&C, the problem being I opted for D&C so I could have it over and done with.

sorry nothing else to contribute

Lazycow · 22/11/2007 13:08

What nightmare Expat

I'm so sorry you are going through this. your situation seems very complicated (especially with your genetic hyperthermia)

I really don't know the ins and outs of this but can't you wait a while to see if it all happens naturally?

Hulababy · 22/11/2007 13:08

So sorry

sfxmum · 22/11/2007 13:09

meant to say the problem being if there were problems with the bleeding I would have to go in for a D&C anyway - was what I was told

belgo · 22/11/2007 13:09

so sorry to hear this Expat. I hope you get the best treatment there is.

Buda · 22/11/2007 13:09

Oh God Expat. Sounds like a bloody nightmare.

for you.

KermAitchTheFrog · 22/11/2007 13:10

oh shit, expat, lots of stuff goiing on there. i'm sorry they're pissing you about, it's not what you need.

Sheherazadethegoat · 22/11/2007 13:11

sorry to hear your news expat - take care of yourself.

mumblechum · 22/11/2007 13:11

No advice expat, but v. sorry you're going through this crappy experience.

TellusMater · 22/11/2007 13:12

Sorry about all this expat.

I had a blighted ovum (which wasn't referred to as that either) which I left and eventually expelled at 12 weeks.

Hope you get things worked out for you.

HiddenIcon · 22/11/2007 13:13

Aww Expat life is no unfair sometimes.

No advise I am afraid! I had a "missed miscarriage" and wasn't offered a D&C, I was just left to bleed it out at home and that was that.

moonmother · 22/11/2007 13:13

Sorry to hear you news Expat...I had a blighted ovum in 1999 and I like sfxmum was asked whether I wanted to let nature take its course or go in for d+c.
Obviously there may be a need for a d+c afterwards anyway but it may be something to consider if your unhappy with treatment so far.

Carmenere · 22/11/2007 13:15

Sorry that you are going through this shit Expat

FAWKEOFFwiththetinsel · 22/11/2007 13:16

so sorry expat .when going through my 3rd missed miscarriage i was against going under with a GA for personal reasons, iwas allowed to have gas(i think it was gas).it was much easier to come round to as well.hope this helps ((((hugs to you)))) utter wankers to be dicking you around

sweetkitty · 22/11/2007 13:24

shit expat so sorry you have been treated like this am so for you

don't have any experience of this so can't offer you any advice, would waiting to see if your body can do the job itself be any good?

I have heard such bad things about Inverclyde as well

mcchesers · 22/11/2007 13:24

left a message for you on the JULY thread

mcchesers · 22/11/2007 13:27

nevermind i will do it here:
expat - I went through the same thing at 8 weeks found that the sac hadn't grown beyond 6 weeks no embryo. No one ever said "blighted ovum" to me. The private scan doc said it looked like a "non starter". I'm sure this is due to some kind of liability where they have to be careful about diagnosing these things before they are absolutely sure. WTF? anyway..they won't give you the pill+ pessiary option to take at home in case of excessive bleeding and they insist that you come into the hospital to be monitored and it took me 9 hours before I was released. This after waiting three weeks for something to happen naturally.
I'm really really sorry that this is happening to you. I'm here in Glasgow very close to the Southern Gen, if I can help please let me know.

DumbledoresGirl · 22/11/2007 13:27

So sorry to hear about all this Expat, although I know the pregnancy was not what you planned in the first place.

All I can say in support is that I had a blighted ovum when I was pregnant with ds3 (ie, his twin). I don't know what they would do in circumstances such as mine when there is another viable pregnancy going on at the same time, but I did not need a D&C. Yes I had had to have 2 more scans after the original scan diagnosed the blighted ovum, but there was no need for a D&C as everything came out by itself (not a pleasant experience in itself but manageable). So fingers crossed, you will not need the D&C. I am sorry it is such a trek for you to get to the hospital for the scan though. I would take you if I could as, I am sure, would a lot of other Mumsnetters.

Take care in the meantime.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 22/11/2007 13:30

oh no - what a complete f*ck up.

ninedragons · 22/11/2007 13:31

What awful treatment. I'm so sorry.

Slubberdegullion · 22/11/2007 13:31

So sorry to hear this expat. God as if life isn't shit enough sometimes without having to deal with complete and utter NHS arses.

Do you have to have a D&C? I had a missed miscarriage 4 years ago now and was given the choice between D&C and letting nature take its course.

Is your GP any more approachable? Often they will act on your behalf if you are getting buggered about at the hospital.
