Bittersweet World Cup

I'm thrilled that England have made it to the Semifinals of the World Cup. I'm also sat here in tears.

My brother died suddenly a couple of months ago. He was such a huge football fan, the sort of guy that would've watched every match not just the England games.

It just seems so cruel that England are through to the Semifinals for the first time in 28 years and he is not here to see it. We've waited our whole lives for this and he has missed it by 2 months.

I feel the same.

My grandad died 6 year ago this month.

But it still kills me.

He LOVED football. And the world cup. He'd watch every game. Even if England got knocked out.

I'm so sad he isn't here to see this. He would of been ecstatic!

I can’t believe my dad is missing this too. He died 6 weeks ago. He would’ve laughed about missing it but god I wish he was still here. Still doesn’t feel real really that he’s gone.....

And the good weather is a kick in the teeth as well. My dad loved the sun and would’ve been so chuffed with this run of hot sunny days...

Goals and sunshine to all our loved ones ☀️⚽️🍺

Big love to everyone. My dad died in April, he’d have loved this tournament, my OH misses his unique commentary on the matches 😢

Millie2013 · 09/07/2018 20:57

BonApp, so sorry to hear about your dad. I followed your thread and may have commented on it. Such early days Flowers

DurhamBlue · 09/07/2018 23:51

Thanks Sorry to all of you feeling the same. I'm so conflicted, I really want them to win Wednesday, and of course I'll watch it. But on the other hand I just wish it would all be over, lose like usual and everything back to normal, in some ways that would be less painful.

My parents have his England flag, he watched every match with that flag draped round his shoulders since he was a child.

C'mon England!

Bon App I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I posted on your thread Flowers
Bittersweet is right. I always watched the World Cup matches with my dad. He would've loved watching England playing in the semis tonight.
Instead, I sit here alone watching and crying. I miss him every moment.

Unmanned · 11/07/2018 20:56

My DP and I would have watched together too instead I’m watching on my own without him to tell me what’s going on! Just over a year since he’s been gone and it’s not getting easier 💐 to all

MyGuideJools · 11/07/2018 21:17

same here , my dad would be loving all this right now. The football, and the sunshine, bittersweet indeed.
Flowers sorry about your brother op
and to everyone else suffering.

Sorry for your loss Durham. I too lost my brother 2 months ago. He was also a great football fan. He would have loved this. My sister and I were just talking about him tonight, saying how much he would have been in his element. X

DurhamBlue · 12/07/2018 00:39

I feel a kind of relief really. Losing tonight makes me feel much less sad than winning but not being able to share it with him. Thanks

I know exactly where you’re coming from xx

BonApp · 12/07/2018 17:55

I feel similar Durham. It would’ve been great to see them win but it would’ve been so sad that my dad couldn’t have seen it.

Maybe next time it won’t be so soon/raw.

Thank you pink and millie. Sorry if I’ve missed your “losses” recently. I hope you’re doing ok....
