How on earth do I tell my four year old her best friend has died? She utterly adored him. She knows what death is, but up to now it was the dog and her great gran who she didn't really know that well. They were both very old.

This is someone her age and I have no idea what to say.

He was poorly, which she knew, but this is still totally unexpected.

When my dd died (age 3) we explained to our 5 year old ds that Pip had got poorly and the drs had tried their hardest but she was too poorly and they couldnt make her better. This was enough for him at the time, he has 2.5 years on had more questions about what she had (pneumonia and sepsis) but with simple explanations of the truth he has always fully accepted that people die usually when they are old and worn out but sometimes people die when they are little because of nasty illnesses.
