at what age did your DC wipe their own bum after a poo?

DS is 4 in November and I have tried to get him to wipe his own bum. He is easily upset about getting dirty and poo on hands just sends him into meltdown!!

Should I push it or let him tell me when he's ready - or will I still be wiping a 10 year olds bum!

ds is 5 and has just started doing it himself. I've tried to get him to do it himself for ages, but rather reasonably he just looks at me and says 'but it smells'. Nine times out of 10 he will now do it himself but likes me to check.

Ds1 is 4.8 and has just got to the point where he can do this well. He starts school in Sept so that was the deadline we had to work to. I had to be very firm with him giving it a go at 4, and we started with me handing him wet wipes. It has been rather a long road...
