dd's weird crawling - what do you think?

dd3 is 10 months and started crawling today but crawls exactly like this. The link isn't of dd but she is crawling in the same way - I'm freaking out a bit. Do you think there could be a problem? DD2 is disabled and I always worry that something could be wrong with dd3. Anyone have a baby crawling like this who went on to walk ok etc?

There are all sorts of crawls out there - bum shuffles, commando-crawls, as well as the conventional crawl on the knees - whatever they decide is the best way to get around. I don't think you should be too concerned. A friend of mine's ds did a similar "one knee one foot" crawl and is completely normal.

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2010 20:20

DD is 9 months and started doing that, now she crawls 'properly'
I think it's just when they start, they flop down from a sitting position and so one leg gets a bit trapped (DS never did it this way, he crawled before he sat so never did that)
Never even occured to me that it was odd

daisyj · 05/07/2010 20:22

Normal. Quite amusing, but normal . A friend's baby never did manage to crawl in a straight line - like a boat with one oar - but then he was walking well by a year.

CarGirl · 05/07/2010 20:24

Misdee's youngest crawled/crawls like that I think she was diagnosed with hypermobility but I'm not sure, if I see her will point her to this thread.

thisisyesterday · 05/07/2010 20:24

ahh my friend's baby did that! she is absolutely fine

NoahAndTheWhale · 05/07/2010 20:28

DD "crawled" very like that. Went round amazingly fast as well. She finally learned how to crawl properly at about 2.5 but had been walking since 15 months.

I appreciate your concern but really don't think there is a problem.

CherryBaby · 05/07/2010 20:28

Hangingbelly, my DD crawled on her knees till, well, saturday. She's 15 months. When she did walk while holding on to someones hand, she dragged one foot behind her.

Everyone commented on it, and some family members even said I "made her feet go crooked because she wore soft shoes too often."

I drove myself insane worrying/researching/ harrassing health professionals/crying about it.

Then when she stopped dragging her foot and started walking on her knees, everyone (dh's family in particular ) commented on it "EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY SAW HER*. In any one visit, I was probably "Advised" by every family member to "make her walk" by holding her hand and forcing her to walk alongside me for 20/30 minutes everyday.
It was the most frustrating, exasparating time ever.

When she began walking, I wanted to make a video of it and ram it down every single throat!

She will walk. In her own time.
Dont worry about it, and dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

tvaerialmagpiebin · 05/07/2010 20:28

mine did that and was walking at ten months.
Absolutely fine IMHO.

OnEdge · 05/07/2010 20:34

My 13 month old son crawls exactly like that, we call it his "freestyling" Just this last week he has begun to walk quite normally, so now he does a mixture of freestyling, proper crawling and tottering.

The only little problem we found with that crawl is that if he has shorts on, the leg that is underneath gets a bit sore like a carpet burn.

Dont worry, they wont be doing it when they are 18 so will learn how to walk spmewhere along the line.

chibi · 05/07/2010 20:38

my ds does this, he also cruises along the furniture + will walk when someone holds his hands

when he is walking it looks fine, both legs move normally, so i don't think his crawling style means anything sinister

he is v v v fast though!

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 05/07/2010 20:56

thank you - I think I'll be always be looking for 'signs' sadly. But dd is weight bearing really really well and seems to be doing well generally so I should take off my worry hat I think. Thanks

Sad
verybusyspider · 05/07/2010 22:06

it looks like you've been reassured by the comments posted but I just wanted to add that my 12 month old ds3 does the same thing and, although completely different from other 2 ds's, I think he's fine, he's just started to stand independantly and walking pushing a walker along
I hope that also helps

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 05/07/2010 22:08

thanks Spider. It just looks so odd. Actually thinking about it, my dd2 who has cerbral palsy actually crawled perfectly as she was nearly 2 and we had taught her slowly but surely by literally moving one limb at a time. So I guess perhaps dd's ability to invent her own crawling style is indicative of her being 'ok'. .

EsmeWeatherwax · 05/07/2010 22:13

Just to add another reassurance, my dd2 never crawled properly, has always done exactly this weird crabwise thing, she's 14 months and just started walking properly this week, with no sign of any problems. I'll actually miss the sideways shuffle I think, although she can go like the wind when she does it!

Littlefish · 05/07/2010 22:14

Dd always crawled on one knee and one foot if you see what I mean. She crawled at 8 months and walked, perfectly normally at 12 months.

misdee · 05/07/2010 22:15

yes, my dd4 crawled like this. but she also didnt weight bear on her left leg. she has hypermobility in her ankles, knees, hips (and upper body), and still drags the left leg slightly. she walked at 18months old.

CarGirl · 05/07/2010 22:23

Glad you turned up dee! Couldn't remember the full story.

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 05/07/2010 22:27

My DS2 (10 mos) crawls like that when he's on a hard floor. When he's on a carpet he crawls conventionally - I think he doesn't like the hard floor on his knees. I'm sure it's normal - don't worry.

Ineedsomesleep · 05/07/2010 22:27

I haven't had one but we've had one in the family who is quite normal.

DS only rolled over once and didn't crawl for ages. He started commando crawling and walked 2 weeks later.

Don't worry, DD3 should be fine.

misdee · 05/07/2010 22:28

if she is crawling like that, and everything else is fine (weightbearing etc) then i wouldnt worry

mcflumpy · 06/07/2010 05:27

My DD started crawling like this (she walked before she crawled) then after about 3 weeks she crawled 'conventionally' now she uses this crawl when she wants to get somewhere fast, her speed is amazing! She walked at 11mo. FWIW I know of 2 other babies who crawled like this and both were earlyish walkers.

Tee2072 · 06/07/2010 06:36

I just noticed my almost 13 month old crawling like this yesterday. So glad this thread was posting because I was getting nervous.

But he also weight bears fine, pulls himself up and cruises a bit. So I guess he's okay!

TheJollyPirate · 06/07/2010 07:06

It sounds and looks pretty normal to me (am a HV) - babies have an amazing variety of crawling styles - think I have seen em all now. Just six months ago I saw a 15 month old whose crawling consisted of - crawl, crawl "ooh look - there's something over there I want" raise to knees and bounce across room on knees like one of those Yogic Flyer people, I actually sent him to a GP and physio for advice and they looked at him, could find nothing wrong and now six months on he is running everywhere.

StealthPolarBear · 06/07/2010 07:35

a friend of mine's DD does that - kind of hops sideways on bended knees, they call it her bunny hop
