Licking things at 5yrs - is this normal?

Hi,

My 5yrs old has over last month or so seem to like tasting/licking things even though is aware that some things aren't good to lick.
My child says they like to lick things to see what they taste like.

I have tried to ignore it, but that's not worked. I also tell my child not to do it but it has no effect.

Is this a common thing for children of this age to do?

Not sure if this is common, BionicEar, but a friend of mine's DS did the same when he was about 4 or so. no idea why and I did not raise the subject with my friend. He does not do it anymore and is not 5yrs7months!

Have you tried researching it online?

So sorry to be of no help whatsoever!

My DS has been through phases of doing this - he is now 6 and I haven't noticed him licking anything for a while now. He has been known to lick windows, carpets, toys and the TV (!). I just assumed it is a sensory thing - I've never worried about it really.

Ah well will put it down to one of those strange children past times and hope DC will grow out of it!
