How many words can your 18 month old say or sign?

Just wondering what the range is, DS2 has no words and only a few signs (pointing, waving, "where") but communicates well anyway, he does babble.

DS1 has ASD and SALT kept telling me he was fine, DS2 is a very different child, but the HV thinks his speech is delayed.

SO, what do your kids do? (This is proper science, innit. )

DS3 is 17m.

He says 'Mama' 'Mummy' 'Daddy' 'DaDa'

'buyer' - car

'bop-bop' - bottle

If I ask him to get his shoes or something he understands and will bring them.

If I say 'dinner is ready' he will run to his highchair and lift his arms to be put in.

He generally understands well enough what's going on, but can't talk as such.

Babbles an awful lot as if he is speaking fluently in another language though. He will tell you a whole story in his funny language if you ask him questions etc.

This is pretty reassuring. I was concerned about DS1 at this age, I wasn't concerned about DS2 until well meaning people started mentioning it. But his communication is wonderful. .

DD (my DC1) was an early talker and walker (first word about 8 months, walking at 9), DS1 was an early walker but didn't speak, EVERYONE put my concerns down to me comparing the two of them. Of course, I was comparing them, but I would have been worried about DS1 anyway!

THanks everyone x

Mine has about thirty words at 18 months.

None of them are Mummy.

My husband had two words till he was 4, believe it or not. He was held back from school because of it. But he has no SN, and is now studying for a PhD and giving talks at international conferences.

David Mitchell, the author, didn't speak until he was 5.

Just wondering again today about ds (19 months). I am sure I wouldn't worry if it weren't for feeling guilty that he gets little quality time with me (dd here in am, sleeps through pre school time in pm). But now has 8-10 words and several more signs. Not many of those are understandable if you don't know him (either signs or words!). But read a leaflet from SALT dept that said that didn't matter. I think this thread shows again what a range there is.

DS is almost 19mo - I would guess he can say about 50-60 words. Do animal noises count then it would be at least 10-15 more!

I think all of them develope very differently.

My 17 month old mainly says names Nan, Dad and Nandad. Is very good at communicating though and even has a sense of humour! Is able to follow instructions, is rather lateral thinking.

The other day I was tandeming and Baby started stroking Toddler's head then slid down her face and stuck a finger in her mouth!
