Mum thinks DS may be dyslexic. I don't...

My mother has just suggested to me that she thinks DS (5) may be dyslexic.

Her reasoning for this conclusion? He gets some letters and numbers back to front (mirrored). the things he writes in mirror image are:

2 looks like a 5 or an S
3 is reversed to look like an E
1 is reversed and looks like a 7
7 is reversed and looks like a 1
He often mixes up d and b, occasionally p

and so on.

My argument is that he is 5 years old and this is normal development. He is learning ffs!

I am right in my thinking aren't I? This is no way indicates dyslexia does it?

In all other ways he is progressing perfectly. He is doing well with reading and maths and social development etc.

my son is dyslexic, and was 10,when it was decided he was.My son gets his b and d mixed up,but the thing i thought was weird is he can read well,so i didnt think he was,but i noticed one day he was reading and came to the word..will..I said to him what does that say and he was spelling it out and i said cant you see it says will,as his name is william, and he said oh yes ..

But as your son is only five,he is only just learning all these things..so i wouldnt worry too much at the moment, just keep on an eye on it,good luck.

Thanks lil

The way you describe the will and William - that actually sounds similar to DS on occasion. He can do that with certain words, and sometimes he will get completely stuck on a owrd that he knows as he has read it many times, including on the previous page. I had always put it down to getting tired.

I will keep an eye, but atm I am not especially worried.
