They're all so different, I don't know how anyone can write books on this. My 3, all my friends and relatives children - no-one has had the same experience twice. You just have to try it and see what works. And it won't be what the next parent would have done in your place.

Major bribery usually does seem to work, if they're physically capable ...

Yes mine would still be at 5 i expect very lazy and no she does not care one jot about being in nappies, actually she is missing them and takes one to bed each night . In Feb she asked for the potty i put her on and she did wees in it, but its on her terms and when she feels like it, its not a lightbulb moment and everything is easy forever more. I do not hold out any hope that she will do it by herself in the next year, mabey at 5 or 5.5, but noway am i waiting that long and spending money on nappies that she can do without tbh. I have noticed that since she has been in pants, dd is much more aware of when she has to go and of her body functions, developed good bladdar control and does do most wees in the toilet and has asked for the toilet and done wee. To go back to nappies would be a no no. Some children just dont want to do it and need that gentle push to make the next step.

My DS is 3 next week and we are on our third attempt - day one is not going well

He will go if put on the potty but then wet himself 5 mins later - he seems to have no concept of when he needs to go. I will give it a few more days but he just doesn't seem to get it.

DD on the other hand was 2.6, done in a few days and dry at night within about a month - all DCs are most definitely different

My DS will be 3 in July...he will pee in the potty b/c he likes standing over it, but will not poo. He can't go to preschool next autumn in diapers so hopefully we'll get it over the summer.

Some kids would be in nappies forever unless pushed I think. Myself being one. I was in nappies still when I went to school at over 4. Apparently the teacher said after swimming lessons to my Mum "Is that nappy rash?!" Mum was a tad embarrassed. She took me home, explained I had to use the toilet instead, and that was it. I think I was just lazy. Mum said it was the same with the pushchair...

So I shall be waiting until DS initiates it - hopefully it'll be before he starts university...
