Okay...now he's stopped squawking for five minutes and I can type, can any of you ladies give me an opinion?

My son has been a generally happy baby since he was born, lots of smiles when he wakes up in the morning and when people talk to him etc, but in the last couple of days he's suddenly become a real stone cold Mr Grumpy - screaming or whinging whenever he's awake and he hasn't got food in his mouth. He doesn't smile anymore very much, just frowns at me as if I'm trying to explain complex metaphysics to him, then cries.

It's getting really upsetting for me as I want my happy boy back and keep thinking it's something I've done that's made him suddenly unhappy.

He sleeps about 5-6 hours overnight and naps during the day to a greater or lesser degree of success. He doesn't seem to have a temperature (hooray armpit thermometers). He also generally feeds well but again in the last couple of days he seems to be less enthusiastic to take food. There are still wet/dirty nappies pretty much as usual.

Any thoughts? Colic? Growth spurt? Reflux? Gas? Or any wisdom from those who've been through it before (would LOVE to hear that it's just his age and he'll stop soon!)

I'm not sure if this will help at all but both my boys have gone through stages like this when they were between 3-6 months. Their brains and bodies are changing so much that they don't stay the same as they were when they were newborns. (obviously!)

There's probably some kind of developmental leap going on inside his little head and he's trying to work it out.

I'm sure he will revert to his usual self soon enough. Rest assured it is nothing you have done.

Thanks countrylover that's reassuring! I'm having a quiet day at home with him today as his routine does get disrupted sometimes when I take him to baby classes and I'll see if he settles down at all. If not can ask the HV tomorrow at clinic, I guess, but I always worry they're going to think I'm an insane overanxious idiot...

Any and all other opinions/advice very welcome!
