Do babies in the UK have a hip scan?

Just wondered if anyone could advise me if a hip scan is routinely done for newborns in the UK?

I'm in Romania and on my hospital discharge notes it mentions getting a scan to check for developmental dislocation of the hips at 6-8 weeks old. I've have never heard anyone mention it before and am just curious to know if it's the norm.

Thanks

If at their 6 weeks the doctor notices clicking when they manipulate the hip joint.

Dd had one but if I recall it was to do with her being breech.

My DTs did but it was because they were breech CS or because they were prem (sorry can't remember which). I don't think its routine and it may differ for each health authority.

Hip USS are routinue in some countries e.g., Germany & Austria, don't know about Romania. In the UK babies are scanned if breech, breech late in pregnancy, family history or clinical findings at newborn or 6 week check or later. Not sure what else.

My ds2 had a USS at 6 weeks. My midwife thought he was breech at 34/40 weeks. He turned by himself and was a normal delivery. In fact his hips were thought to be normal at his newborn check but USS revealed that his left hip socket was a bit too shallow and was at risk of dislocating. He has been in a harness to correct it for 9 weeks now. It comes off in 2 weeks - I cant wait! If found early enough it is easily treated and has a very high success rate.

My daughter had this done in hospital (Scotland) when she was about a day old. They found she did have a dislocated hip and she went in a supporting harness at 2 days old .

DS1 had a hip scan at 10 days old (again Scotland) as a precautionary matter because he was a breech baby.

My DD3 was breech (before being turned at 39 weeks) and so had a hip scan but none of my others have had one

bumpybecky · 25/05/2010 12:49

dd1 was scanned as she'd clicked on her 6 week check. She'd not been breech and has no family history of problems.

At the scan they thought the joint was slightly out from where it should have been and so we had her in double nappies for a couple of months to try and sort it out. She was then re-scanned and it was all ok.

Not sure on extact dates as she's 12 now!

My son had one at six weeks because the pead found he had a clicky hip at his newborn check. Scan was normal at 6 weeks so had resolved itself.

SweetApril · 25/05/2010 12:57

My DD had a hip scan because she was quite large - 9lb 11oz. Midwife said it was routine for big babies. I don't know if that's just in my area though. I am in the UK btw.

Thanks everyone. I guess I will get it done then as it can't do any harm. She wasn't breech or especially large, so I guess it's just one of the tests they do here.

KittyTN - hope the next 2 weeks go quickly and your son is fine
