What could these itchy red hard lumps be on my 2 year old

My ds is 2.5 and this is the second time in about 3 weeks that he has come up with red hard lumps which start out looking like insect bites but then seem to get bigger and are very very itchy, last time he got them they went away after about a week but have left a mark. He woke up this morning with them again but this time there are heaps of them and they are over his head, neck and some on his body and feet, they are really itchy for him and uncomfortable, I took him to the doc this afternoon who bascially didn't know what they were and he started out saying it was a virus and then said it looked like an allergy to something. He has prescibed pirition. I just don't like that it has happened twice so quickly and that there seem to be no answer for what it is. Has anyone else's little ones had this? p.s there has been no change in washing powder, what he is eating etc etc

does sound like an allergic reaction, if it continues you'll need to get the gp to refer him to a specialist so they can do some allergy testing.

Do you have a cat? It sounds possible they could be flea bites. The fact they get quite big could mean your ds is having an allergic reaction to the bites. Some people seem to attract cat fleas like a magnet, so even if no-one else in the house has them it's still possible that's what they are. They tend to hatch when the weather starts to warm up.

Check for a molluscum contagiosum. It is a virus in children that they can pick up at the swimming pool or by touch.
