My DS will be 3 at the end of June. He never asks "why?" question. He uses where and what quite often but no whys or whens. Is this normal for his age? When did your LOs start asking why?

Oh my DS (now5.9) still didn't until about 3.5 and I was concerened (if not secretly a bit relieved!) that he hadn't started the why phase. He now askes why to lots of difficult questions. He is actually a very intelligent boy he never asked why as he liked to work things out for himself or would learn from factual programmes about animals, volcanoes etc. He also never asked when as he had and still doesn't really have a concept of time.

He has a very 'pictured type' memory and asks where a lot as he can map out journies in his head etc.

Personally from my own experience I would say not to worry.

My DD (2.2) has started saying it all the time but is just copying her childminders 4 year old daughter (also does a good line in "not fair!" and "I don't want to").......none of her friends the same age are saying it (until they start copying her!!) I think a lot of what they come out with at such young ages it just words they've heard somewhere and want to try out. Believe me when he does start with "why?" you'll be wishing he didn't!!

On saturday - DD is 3 in July - and trust me once it starts it keeps on coming. Thankfully most things have been semi-reasonable and she has mostly accepted the answer but after the 100th or so time in a day it is a bit wearing...don't worry just give thanks .
