DS is almost 18 months old, and is one of the cutest things on god's green earth. very sweet, smart, huggable and loving.

around about a month ago he started having tantrums- usually when he wants to have his way and doesn't get to do so- he would just cry and cry, scream his lungs out, bang his legs, grab onto something, go into a fit, and generally seem like he's having a breakdown

today was an all-time record: 45 minutes of screaming! screaming, kicking, arching his back , chocking on his own snot, almost vomiting because he was crying so hard, etc.

I tried hugging him, ignoring him, talking to him in a calm&low voice, reasoning with him. nothing worked. only when it seemed like he's had enough, did he stop crying.

please, wise women, shed your divine wisdom upon me- what to do?!

Distract. Then ignore. Then after it's all over gently say it's wrong to behave like that.

Soon (couple of month) you can use humour as he can understnad more language - e.g You:'do you want to clean your teeth?' Him:'NO! NO! NONONONO!' etc

You: do you want to read a book / go to bed / have a sweetie etc - take the attention from constantly saying no to making choices.

Also give him a little bit of choice - 'do you want your blue cup or green cup' 'Nana or apple' 'red T shirt or white T shirt' etc - I once read that tantrums come from frustration over lack of being able to express themselves.

Works for me. Sometimes [hmmm]
