Taking off his own trousers

We started potty training ds last week. He?s being very good, trying very hard and having some success ? some days are better than others but I think it?s going to be a long haul. Anyway, he went to nursery today in pants for the first time, and the teacher expressed a lot of surprise that he couldn?t pull his own trousers up and down. It was probably partly to do with me not thinking and sending him in trousers with a button at the waist that has to be undone first (lesson learned, am going to try and find some elasticated waist ones today) but also I actually don?t think he can do it himself. We?re going to practice ? he?s fairly dextrous and I?m sure he will get the hang of it soon, but it did make me wonder if at nearly 3 (in 2 months time) he really should be able to do this, and I?ve failed to focus on a key part of his development, and he?ll still be needing me to pull up his trousers when he?s 12?

My 2.6 year old can pull his trousers up and down and has done since 2.4

my ds can pull down his own trousers if they are elasticated waist but can't do up/ undo buttons/zips - i think that is alot to expect of a 3 yr old

He is same age as your ds and we have just abandoned potty training as he wasn't getting it at all.

pulling down his own trousers was the only thing he could do!!

perhaps only send him to nursery in elasticated trousers and start teaching him how to pull them down, but not a big deal IMO that he can't/doesn't know how to do it.

My ds is 2.9 and has noooo interest whatsoever in dressing or undressing himself, won['t even take his own shoes or socks off which I'm sure most 18 month olds can manage! He is potty trained though, he needs me to help him up onto the toilet anyway so I just pull his trousers up and down for him. I try to encourage him to do it but he really has not got a clue no matter how many times I try to show him or tell him which bit to hold and pull down. I am sure he will get the hang of it eventually!

My DS (23mo) is very dextrous at removing trousers, and socks, and nappies. He often greets Daddy at the end of the day by doing a little dance of delight on the doorstep with his willy waving in the breeze.

I'm sure your DS will get the hang of trousers as soon as you find some elasticed waistbands instead of buttons.
Good Luck.

ds has jeans with buttons plus an elasticated waist (the size adjustable ones) and he can pull them up and down without needing to undo the button. Also, remember never to put a belt on unless it is elasticated too as they wont be able to undo that either.

My son is 3 and can do his trousers but his so lazy he can't be bothered! He would happily run around with no clothes on although a chocolate button for doing it gets it done immediately. Unfortunately star chart did nothing as he said he would do it later as didn't want a sticker right now!

Think I have a child with attitude though!
