How to stop DS fiddling with his penis during nappy change.

I don't mind him fiddling with his penis per se but he insists on doing it during nappy changes, particularly during poo-ey nappy changes. It's like it has a magnetic pull.

Please someone suggest how to stop it. He is 20 months, and it's getting worse.

Good luck.

Give him something else to hold? That never worked with either of my boys though.

I ended up changing them on my knee, so I could sort of block their access to it with my arm/body.

I am the queen of lightning nappy changes.

Unless you mean that bad pooey nappies mean poo all over his willy which he then grabs and redistributes, why worry about it? It keeps him amused after all.
However if it is a case of poo everywhere, then try whipping off the nappy and enveloping the willy in a wipe first - so when you;ve cleaned that up he can play with it while you clean his bum.

Don't worry about it, it's a phase. They all do it, he'll grow out of it by the time he's 50 .
Seriously though, give him something else to play with. I had an old bunch of keys that ds was only allowed to play with at nappy change times, kept his hands busy and away from his bits.
Wait til he's out of nappies and has free access

meh. It is the start of a life long hobby. It feels good, ergo they do it. No big deal (unless it is covered in poo!!). When he is older, just explain you dont play with your willy in front of people.

janajos · 21/04/2010 15:46

I agree. I always give mine something to play with while I change them. I've had three boys and it seems to work. None of mine have really played with themselves as they got older, so it is not inevitable. (THey had plenty of other horrid habits though!)

NoseyNooNoo · 21/04/2010 17:44

I'm not being a prude about it - if I was him I'd want to play with my penis, however, he ends up with poo over his hand which go straight into his mouth/hair etc.

I have tried giving him something else to play with but that just ends up being rubbed on his poo-ey penis! It's really horrible.

He's been doing it since he was about 7 months - how long is this phase. It just seems to be getting worse. He tries to get his hand in before the nappy is off properly.

I can't do the knee change thing - can't get the hang of it.

cor how annoying!

How about changing him standing up, in front of the TV? I had to do this with DS after a certain age as he would simply NOT lay down for a nappy change. Use pull-up nappies and it's easy! The TV might just distract him enough.
Or you could go for a two-pronged attack; give him something to play with AND stand him up in front of the TV!

NoseyNooNoo · 22/04/2010 12:10

hadn't thought of pull ups making it easier. I'll try the stand up change but I suspect he'll run off - he is constantly trying to run away. To be honest, he is just being generally naughty and when I tell him off he laughs at me! Meanwhile his older sister is at the stage when she does nothing but talk so I'm struggling with him whilst she is going 'yak, yak, yak' in my ear.

I went out for a walk last night just to get some peace and then was in bed by 9.30. Unfortunately I as woken quite early by her shouting.

We're having a great time at the moment!

Hmm, standing up changes haven't worked - I can't get the poo out from all the crevices and he just wants to run about.

I could scream I really could...

If he only poos once a day you could do his bath staight after?

Start running a shallow bath as soon as you get the first whiff and then once the nappy's off try to wipe off as much as pos... then straight in the bath.

Then if there is any stray poo on face/hair you can wash it off in the bath.

UnseenAcademicalMum · 28/04/2010 00:06

I'd agree with SolidGoldBrass, when you take the nappy off, immediately cover his willy with a wipe and clean it off early, then he can play with it whilst you clean the rest of him up.

It does seem to be an obsession with boys. DS2 (currently 23 months) loves to pull his whilst shouting "willy", "willy" .

Pinkglow · 28/04/2010 12:14

I have to quickly clean his balls first (while keeping his hand away somehow) once Ive done this hes free to tug away while I do his bum otherwise poo goes everywhere

NoseyNooNoo · 28/04/2010 12:59

No, he does more than 1 poo a day! I do try to clean the front first but I'm trying to hold both of his hands with one hand and using an elbow to stop him crawling off, standing up.

I know there is no answer...
