14 week old baby standing up?!!

hi there

my 14 week old just wants to stand up all the time. he can't balance so needs support obviously but he can take a suprising amount of his own weight. he won't bend his knees to sit down and pushes himself up when he is in your lap. he seems so pleased with himself when he is standing and looking around. i am just concerned that he shouldn't be weight bearing on his feet- i don't know whether his bones are developed well enough to take the stress. probably being over concerned but wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar?

it's fine - lots of little ones do this

AngryPixie · 07/04/2010 11:39

My dd1 did this too. Was torn between feeling smug and weirded out but it was fine, it didn't mean anything and she developed crawling, walking etc at a bog standard rate!

BuzzingNoise · 07/04/2010 11:40

Yes it's perfectly normal.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 07/04/2010 11:41

Mine did it from 10 weeks, and then refused to be anything approaching advanced in any other way (sat up 6 months, crawled 9 months, stood unsupported 12 months, walked 15 months) so enjoy it while it lasts, and be as smug as you want, I think!

It's nothing to worry about.

Yeah my DD loved being upright. Shes always been a nosey mare and wanting to see what was going on and wasnt happy laying down at all.
She was sitting up unaided at 3.5mths.

same here, tortoise

people have been telling me DS "will be walking soon!" for about 6 months now (always active, always upright, always wanting to stand up), but at 14 months, he refuses to give up shuffling around on his knees and actually walk!!

enjoy the fact that you have an alert baby who likes to use his limbs....

thanks for all your reassuring posts. you are right- he is a nosey parker!!

I've got one of those standing babies too! He was crawling at six months (now 7 and a bit
months) not only does he want to stand - and bounce -ALL- the time, he refuses to lie on his back and just crawls off while I am trying to change his nappy ...

BertieBotts · 10/04/2010 22:41

Yes DS was like this too! He started cruising as soon as he could crawl, which was a bit of a shock! But then just stuck to cruising for 8 months and didn't walk unsupported until 16 months. Took him another few weeks to learn to run and since then he's never looked back and walks/runs everywhere.

It's fine! I panicked when my little one started standing at about that age, she wouldn't lie down just kept her legs straight! My husbands mum kept saying not to let her cos it would make her bow legged but checked with the midwife and she said that it's fine and the bow legged thing is just an old wives tale. She's just 7 months now and has been crawling for about 6 weeks and the last couple weeks has started to pull herself up on everything! Its great apart from she can pull herself up in her cot so won't lie down to go to sleep!
