hi,

DD (18m) was poorly last week with a D&V bug and sometimes started crying and arching her back which I put down to having a sore tummy.

She's over the sickness thing now, but is still doing the crying & arching thing, sometimes she doesn't want to be held & if I put her down she rolls around on the floor - DH & I are now wondering if it is a sore tum, or are these her first attempts at tantrums?! we can sometimes distract her with toys etc, and giving her calpol doesn't seem to prevent them... any suggestions as to how I can figure out what's going on?!

My mother hasn't helped the situation by sending me a huge txt stating that it can't possibly be a tantrum as she is too young(?!) and going on to list all the things which could possibly be wrong with her (ending in meningitis) TIA

You mum is wrong:Dc's do things at different times like walking or talking and that includes tantrums!

maybe she has an allergy to something she's eating. You could try checking her diet. Probably best not to make a big thing out of it.

She may well still have a sore stomach - D&V bugs often strip away the stomach lining and it takes a while (definitely more than a week) to build up again. It could be a tantrum but it depends what it's associated with - most toddlers don't have tantrums just out of the blue, it's usually frustration or fury at something. If it's not connected to something making her angry then she may well have a stomachache.

thanks guys, she does seem to do it when she's annoyed (like when I stopped her trying to eat a pen this morning) - i figure the stomach ache is just making her more touchy than usual, so fingers crossed they'll get less frequent as her tummy gets better
