So how do you explain swearing is unacceptable?

That's it really. DS (7) got in car from school Thursday and asked if shit was a swear word. I of course explained it was, it was unacceptable to say it as it wasn't a nice word, we don't use words like that etc etc. He said but why is it a bad word. What have you said to explain it?

I'd have explained it by saying that although it's just a word for poo and it's a perfectly good one, some people find it upsetting to hear, especially when said by children.
