Advice on DC2 arriving when DD1 is 21mo

It's early days of pregnancy but already worrying about life with 2 so close together, but in particular I'm wondering how to introduce the idea of a sibling to DD1. She's currently 14mo.

I've read a few books which have some suggestions but they all seem aimed at talking to older children about it. Then again, DD has only just started to talk so I don't really know how much her understanding will have shifted in another 5 months or so.

Anyone been there, done that? Also, is it worth trying to potty train DD1 before DC2 arrives or is it inevitable that she'll regress and so we may as well wait til she's older?

Same gap as ours too. It can be tricky, but managable. DS wasn't really talking much so it was hard to know how much he had taken in. Actually he was fine while she was a baby, it was when she started to be mobile we had more trouble.

As for training, I would just be led by your DD. If she seems ready go for it.

We've got a 22 month age gap and I was v worried about how DS would react. I did have some sort of new baby in the family book I read to him before DD was born but I don't think he took much in. When she was born it was fine - like Humphrey it was when she became mobile he was less keen .

As for potty training, don't worry. DS was trained about 2.2 which was earlyish amongst his friends. I could have done it a little earlier, but DD was 4 months when I did get around to doing it and before then I didn't feel happy about doing it due to small babyness. It would have been worse doing it when v pregnant I think.

Thanks all. I guess we'll just take it as it comes...
