Two year old - fixating / obsessing with certain toys - normal?

Hi there

My DS (2 and a couple of months) is completely obsessed with balls. He has several bouncy balls in different colours, shapes, sizes etc and wants to take them EVERYWHERE (including to bed) - he will play with them (and not much else) for hours and hours, pretending to cook them in his kitchen, have picnics using them etc etc. He's simply not interested in any other toys and if we go to any one else's house, he just looks for balls.

It's great to watch the imaginative play but I'm starting to worry about the total fixation and wonder if he's ever going to play with anything else. My husband asked me this morning if this sort of obsessional behaviour is typical of two year old play and I don't know so I wondered if anyone else has any comments?

My DS2 (2.1yo) plays with Cars from morning to night. They are carried in his hands at all times. His first word upon waking is usually 'Lightning, Chick Hicks or Mater''.

We too are waiting anxiously for the obsession to end.

That's reassuring, thank you! Yes, his first words upon waking are always 'Where did my balls go?' - the daily opportunity for double entendres is endless......especially when he cooks them in the oven!
