Stop breastfeeding last night, any tips on preventing mastitis?

My son is now six months and I decided to stop bf him last night as he has taken to biting. He was down to two bfs one in the morning and one at night.

My boobs are really hurting and engorged so I'm worried about mastitis. Should I be trying to express a little off to prevent this? or will this prolong the milk drying up?

Ouch to biting and ouch to stopping too!

Help please ladies

Sorry the title was supposed to say 'stopped'.

Just have a hot bath and squeeze a little out just to ease the discomfort, it should soon stop, I don't remember it being too bad.

Hand express a little to relieve the discomfort (under the shower or in a bath is best) and you'll probably be fine. If you were down to twice a day anyway, and haven't had mastitis before, you should find it quite smooth. Expressing a little won't prolong the milk drying; be aware, though, some people find they can squeeze a bit out for a very long time after weaning. It's not an issue - you won't leak, or anything - but it might not just completely dry up for months yet.

I was advised to wear a really good bra (sports bra if you've got one) and make sure you sleep in it as well.

I would go with all the suggestions here but with no.3 recently I was also told that taking cold relief capsules would help the dry things up as well and they certainly made a big difference to me.

I just cut down gradually between 6 and 9 months until there wasn't anything left anyway. No pain at all.
