Talk to me about your 3 month old's night time sleep...

At night DS2 feeds every 3 hours with one longer stretch from when he goes to bed (up to five hours, have tried dreamfeeding to get this 5 hours to co-incide with me being asleep for all of them but to no avail). So an average night might be 7-11.30-2.30-5.30-8

Whilst I would obviously like more sleep I thought this was standard, not too unbearable and similar to DS1 and DD at this age.

But when I went to the baby clinic on friday I got chatting to a group of other mums (about 8 of them) and all of their DC (same age or younger) are either sleeping 7-7 or 7-3-7. This is not usual? Is it?!!

they are fibbing - well, some of them

some of them will be getting up a million times to plug dummies back in

one or two may genuinely be sleeping through

DD is 5 months and nowhere near sleeping through but that is a whole other thread

My dd slept from midnite - 7pm from 8 weeks old, but was a big baby and bottle fed. If its any comfort she is now a total pain in the bum at night and spends more time in my bed than in her own!!!

midnite - 7 A.M. obviously!!! doh!

ds is 16wks and sleeps like yours kind of. usually 7pm-midnight-3am-5am-7am up (have to wake him as have dd to get to preschool).

however, sometimes he doesn't wake at 3am, so has 2 5hr stretches. or he'll wake at 3am but not at 5am.

up until 3months he had been reliably sleeping 7am to 3am, so 8hrs and quite often went 7am to 5am, so 10hrs

but it all went pear shaped from 3 months to now. the worst it gets is every 3 hours, but normal is two 5 hour stretches.

i don't mess with it, i justgo with it. he's breastfed and i assume that like his sister it will settle down by 6 months.

best of luck!

My DS is similar, usually a feed at 6pm, dreamfeed at 10, wakes at 4, then between 7 and 8. Sometimes he's up at 2, then 5, then 7.30ish. He has gone through from about 11 until 6.30 a couple of times, but nowhere near regularly. I'm guessing he'll probably settle down when he starts weaning.

HI Docket,
I love the term "Normal" - What's that?????
My ds (1st & only) is almost 6 months, BF & seems to do pretty much what everyone else is saying. GOes to bed at 7pm then gets up a few times a night for feeds. He started solids a few weeks ago & it hasn't made much difference yet. HOWEVER.....on Wednesday last week he went from 11:15pm right through til almost 7 am!!!!!! the next 2 nights did slightly shorter stretches & then has been up in the middle of the night since! (Ah well, he knows what he wants & needs. I'll get longer sleep stretches when he's ready.)

DS2 is just 4 months. We feed him about 7.30, put him to bed, dreamfeed about 11 and then he goes til about 7-7.30 in the morning. He's been doing that since 10 weeks but I do know that's unusual. I don't know anyone else who had that, except us with DS1 who was sleeping through from 12 weeks.

DS2 has had a blocked nose this last week so we've been up in the night once or twice because of his breathing, but basically he's fine at night.

Definitely don't take that as normal though.

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 08/03/2010 21:14

DS1 slept through the night for exactly two weeks between 10 weeks and 12 weeks, and then started waking again, by the time I weaned him he was waking every three hours. He is 3yo now and still wakes at least once every night, but thankfully he just needs me to put his duvet back over him and then he goes back to sleep.

DS2 is currently 15 weeks and has never slept through, the most he has done is 6 hours at approx 10 weeks then 4 hours, however he soon started waking every 3-4 hours, sometimes I can pop the dummy in and he will go off to sleep again, sometimes this doesn't work and only a feed will send him off again.

Both of them have been very windy babies and sleep better on their tummy's, if on their backs they won't sleep for more than about an hour.

as others have said they are all different

amberflower · 08/03/2010 22:11

I think at this age anything can be 'normal', to be honest. Some will be sleeping through, others waking every couple of hours. I will admit I have been lucky on the sleep front and both mine have gone from 11pm-7am from about 8/9 weeks (this is having gone to bed at 7ish with a 10:30pm dreamfeed), though DS2 has been less consistent than DS1 was. I do know others who've had similar, but those babies are definitely in the minority.

I would be AMAZED if everyone the OP was speaking to was telling the truth. I think a lot of mums refer to 'sleeping through' as 'not feeding in the night' but, as someone has pointed out, many will be getting up to shove dummies back in, or find the blankie, or give a cuddle, etc etc.
