How long do you spend sitting with him?

Perhaps reduce the amount of time gradually?

I usually stay with him until he goes to sleep...5 minutes..after reading a book!

I would wait a 3 minutes and then say, I need the loo, I'll come back and then go to the loo and come back 3 mins later - you'll probably find he/she asleep. If not, then stay another 3 mins then find another excuse.
I did this, ( I have to go and make Daddy's ssupper, I have to turn heating on/off, empty washing machine -all boring and mundane)and eventually we just agreed that I would come and check on him in 5 mins time and you MUST go back. It's all about trust. Once they trust that you will come back, you will find that he/she will settle. Some days are better than others, and occasional relapses occur when something has upset them, but over a week or two, you should be able to cut it down.
Best of luck.

have you tried 'making a deal' with him? we do this with ds. the deal is that if he's still awake when we go back up (after tea, or someime later, or going to bed) then we will read him another story. ds always asks for a deal now before he goes to sleep, we havn't had to read 'another' story yet
