11 mo cold symptoms & sleeping loads

My 11 mo DS is not normally a good sleeper during the day but since he developed a cold he has been sleeping for up to 4 hours a day and another 10 hours at night. He has a snotty nose and temp which goes down when given calpol. He is really grumpy when he wakes up & just seems to want to go back to sleep, he is also very clingy. Is this just a normal cold. My DD has never been this bad with a cold, can babies get manflu? Just concerned about the amount he seems to be sleeping.

My LO's both sleep and sleep and are very grumpy when awake, if very very poorly. I think if you're really concerned, call NHS Direct or see GP. You know your baby best.

Phone NHS Direct. DS had a bad cold like that when he was a similar age and I phoned and they went through some symptoms with me. Made me realise that he wasn't floppy or unresponsive etc, just feeling poorly and wanting to sleep.

This is the first time he has been ill so dont really know what is normal for him. He has been eating and occasionally perks up and plays for a bit but then goes back to sleep. He has been like this since Friday, thought he would be over it by now. Dont think its an emergency, just wondering if I should take him to Drs.

Hi
I work for nhs direct so this is for free.
Cold and flu are viruses and can last 10 days - symptoms should gradually ease.
Children (and adults) sleep more - its the body's way of healing itself.
Plenty of fluids and a nourishing diet
Regular calpol/brufen to ease fever and discomfort.
Saline nose drops and nasal sucker for easier breathing
Head of cot raised to ease nightime coughing.

Mums usually say kiddies perk up briefly and then flake out again!

Watch out for new symptoms developing:- extreme irritability, meningitis symptoms, not responding in a normal manner, vacant expression etc. ear pain, D&V, nasty cough that produces mucous. (I'm looking at bugs that have come in after the virus has weakened the immune system and which need antibiotics to clear). Any fever that is not responding to calpol or brufen. Refusing fluids and not weeing for more than 6-8 hours.

The above is not comprehensive, but listen to your instincts, mums usually know somethings not right, and seek medical advice. I'm sure a gp wont mind putting your mind at rest if you're really worried but Luc.. your LO sounds normal
