Not rolling at 23 weeks??

Hi! I've not posted here before, I'm more of a reader than a writer, but wonder if you can just put my mind to rest?

As the topic suggests, my 23 week old DS is not rolling over and I wonder if I should be concerned. I can put him on his tummy and he'll lift his head and chest bearing the weight on his arms, but he doesn't like it for too long, just one or two minutes. I do 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat' with him, and when we do 'Rock, Rock, Rock Your Boat' I roll him over and he quite enjoys it, he just won't do it himself. He's a really chilled out little man and is quite happy for the world to come to him and I'm not at all worried about any other part of his development.

Thank you x

23 weeks seems very late. Is he hitting other milestones, sitting etc. or have you mis typed the weeks? If his other development is on target probably just doesnt like it - hates face full of carpet perhaps?

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2010 17:56

oooh my almost 22 week old isn't rolling yet, and I haven't even thought to be concerned! I think 6 months is about normal.

NoahAndTheWhale · 15/02/2010 17:57

DD didn't roll until she was 11.5 months. DS rolled at about 4.5 months and was an early one among his contemporaries.

I really wouldn't worry yet, and would also say that 23 weeks isn't "very late".

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2010 17:58

here you go

FWIW my DS was rolling over, back to front at 10 weeks. DD as I said is 21 weeks and a few days and has done front to back once which I think was an accident as she looked startled and hasn't done it since OTOH she's sitting up for about 10 or 15 mins at a time, which DS didn't do until 6 months.

Ignore me - had a long day 23 weeks is fine and within all these guidelines you're given. sorry

Don't worry too much - perhaps as you say he's just very chilled!

FWIW my ds did not roll over utill he was 10 months old and even adjusting for prematurity (9 weeks) that would have put him at 8 months. He likewise showed no inclination to try sitting up or crawling untill later than most of his peers. He is now 8 and I have learned over the years that this is his personality - he will not do anything untill he is ready! Same for walking, speaking, riding a bike, learning to swim...when he decides he is ready it is full steam ahead, but not before.

As long as you are not concerned about anything else, I would not worry too much.

My DD is coming up for 9 months and even though I have caught her rolling over once or twice, she's really not bothered by it at all. She has been sitting up unaided for the last month or so, I think she's going to be a sitter as opposed to a mover! She's quite happy to sit and play with her toys and doesn't have any intention of moving to get them when they're out of reach. I'm not worried at all! She'll do it when she's ready!

My Mum had 5 of us and we all did things at different times.

ConnorTraceptive · 16/02/2010 14:32

DS1 didn't roll until he was about 7 months, he crawled at 8 months but didn't walk til 18 months (big head, small feet!)

PoohBear26 · 16/02/2010 19:01

You've really put my mind to rest, thank you. All the other babies at baby group the same age as DS are rolling with such ease and enjoying playing on their tummies and I worried he should be doing it too, it's difficult not to compare what they're doing. I guess he'll do it in his own time, he's hitting his other milestones, so I'll leave him to it. He's a lot more interested in sitting up and I think is going to be more of a thinker than a doer - just like his Mum!!

Thank you again. xx

Ds2 is 11 months and just started crawling. He has probably rolled about 5 times in his entire life and even now will either just lie there and get cross if you put him on his back or do an impressive sit-up (got better abs than me!).

As long as there are not concerns across his development it's not worth worrying about. We all have strengths and weaknesses.

Karoleann · 16/02/2010 23:00

DS2 didn't roll til he was 8 months (sitting up at around 6 months). He jumps now - at 18M!
DS1 did the really annoying thing of only rolling onto his tummy (and then getting stuck - usually over night).
Sounds like you've a lovely chilled baby xx

Horton · 16/02/2010 23:14

My DD didn't roll over until after she could walk, if that helps at all. Honestly. She stood at about 8 months, never crawled, walked alone at 14 months and didn't learn to roll over until at least 18 months, maybe more. Children are barmy. She's fine, btw, apart from still being potty. But they all are.

PoohBear26 · 16/02/2010 23:51

TBH, any concerns put aside, I'm quite happy he's not rolling just yet as we still co-sleep and that will probably mark the end of it, to be safe.

I do have a very chilled out baby . . . all in his own time I guess. x
