Is my newborn sleeping too much?

I should know better by now because this isn't my first but my seven week old baby really sleeps all the time. I don't remember my first being like this. She literally feeds and the sleeps for a couple of hours, wakes up and feeds again. She doesn't really have any awake and playing time at all at the moment. Is this normal or is it time to ask a doctor? I'm starting to panic now.

Don't panic. Sure mine did this and I felt the same. Prob just under the weather and needs the extra sleep at moment. Or growth spurt and needs extra sleep. I would enjoy it while you can.

Am assuming she's alert for short times and has no rashes or temperature or anything.

If you are worried, call a health visitor/NHS direct or google sleep in babies.?

Forgotten what mine were like when weeny and wish they would sleep more already!

Oh and if all else fails and you're still worried see a doctor, of course!

Thanks for the reply. No rashes or temperature at all. Just sleeping, feeding and pooing in great quantities...

My dd is 6 weeks and also sleeps most of the time. I think she has been using all her energy for eating/pooing/growing, her weight has been going up nicely.

My boy slept LOADS - just like yours which was very incompatible with Gina which I was trying to follow. My girl slept much less, by which time I had ditched Gina. I look back at the times I tried to wake my sleepy boy up and cringe. I'm sure it's normal!

Thanks both of you for replying - am feeling reassured now that this can be normal and I should make the most of it.

My DD slept all the time and I was constantly trying to wake her to get her into a routine, but she just grew out of it and I wish I'd been more relaxed about it.
