How much daytime sleep for a 9-month old?

My 9-month DS usually sleeps for around 3 hours in the daytime, 1 hour naps around 8.30, 12.30 and 4.30, or thereabouts. The last couple of days his 'naps' have been longer so that he's having about 5 hours during the day. He hasn't had any less overnight sleep (approx 7.30pm to 6.30am, with a few, short wakings overnight for milk as we're co-sleeping), and he seems perfectly lively during the day, not lethargic, playing happily etc. Is this a developmental thing? Is it normal? I know some babies this age struggle to nap at all, so I'm aware it varies a lot, but come reassure me that some other babies are like this.

as you said it really depends on the baby. Mine slept for about 2 hours a day at this age.
If he's lively when he's awake and is eating and drinking normally then i wouldn't really worry. In fact enjoy it while it lasts!

My DS is the same age and sometimes only sleeps for a total of an hour all day...mmm, love those days and yet others will sleep a total of three or four hours. I guess like us, sometimes they feel more tired than others.

That said, I always get suspicious when he has four hours as it usually means he's about to come down with some kind of virus. But as yours seems to be fine then I'm sure it's just that he feels more sleepy than usual.

I have to wake my 9mo dd2 up from her daytime naps!!

Like your ds, her night is around 7.30pm till 6.30am.

Her first nap is at 9am and I wake her up at 11am!!! Then she has another nap at around 2pm and I wake her at 4.30pm!

Saying that my 2.5yo still has a 2-3 hour nap every day!

Both of mine sleep worse at night (wake up howling) if they don't get enough sleep in the day.

I am having no more dc's as I don't know how I'd cope with one that hardly napped at all!

Thanks for the responses all. I feel very reassured that you haven't all gone 'Five hours??? What are you doing, woman, get him to a doctor!'

I wish my 9 month old DS would sleep for that long during the day! On a good day he'll have a half hour nap sometime between 10am and 11am, and about an hour and a half at around 1.30-2pm ish. On a bad day he'll go from 7.30am to 7pm with no more than an hours sleep during the day. As for at night, just don't ask...
He's a nosy boy and I think he thinks he's going to miss out on something by sleeping!

I've been concerned too that my 9mo DD was sleeping too much in the day - she has three naps of about 90 minutes each as well, and sleeps ok at night. Glad to hear she's not the only one!

My 9 months old DS sleeps for 30 mins in the morning, 90-120 mins at lunchtime and then goes to bed at 7pm. He normally wakes up between 6 and 7am. I don't think he'll need the morning nap for that much longer.
