DD has just about learnt her whole alphabet plus the sh/ch/th phonics, she has cards and knows them all she does 'read, write inc' at preschool

She can blend the sounds to 'read' cvc words like cat/mat/sat etc and makes these and plays word games with her cousins with the letter cards

She has started to 'read' the ORT songbirds first level books, Am I Top Cat/Bob Bug and can sound out each indivual letter then blend to make word then make sentence (tis painfully slow for me but she loves it )

I was taught to read with Peter and Jane and sso sight read words rather thean sounding them out so im a bit unsure now. Do i let her read through these books, continuing to sound out each indivual letter or should she be learining the word? I also have some superphonics books but i think they are a bit too hard atm so am keeping them aside for a bit.

Please note, I am not pushing her, am not too bothered when she learns to read but she is desperate too so I want to support her while she is keen.

Remember that reading is more than technical decoding. You can work on the literature side with lots of reading and rereading and building up of favourites. If you combine this with some picking out of familiar words and words she can build herself she will soon be able to use that skill and her memory to read some bits to you. Telher that memorising words is another part of reading and she can use that skill too. There is never enough time for story reading in school but you can really make it an important thing at home, supporting what is done at school. Don't be put off by this scientific approach to teaching reading. Children use a wide range of skills, it just isn't flavour of the month to say so at the moment. I could go on but will save you my rant!
